@Norn King: Thanks for the comment. He got slimier in the end.

@Gitsplitta: Thanks man, I know what you mean. It's great when a mini just makes you smile or even laugh. So thanks.

@nerdfest09: Your sister, eh? She hawd? Sorry, but if someone mentions having a sister that question's gotta come up (at least the silly parts of the interweb I tend to dwell in ).

Update!

As planned (and that's pretty unusual), Epidemius and the Plague Drones were finished yesterday:

Also, I finished one of those Infinity minis I've had half-painted for a looong time. The idea behind this one is that I wanted more possibilities to field Crazy Koalas in my Nomads "army" and apart from the Lunokhod Remote drone thing (which I also have yet to finish) I did Moran, a Maasai hunter:

The facepaint was added in the very end. I'm a huge fan of face painting and I took the design from actual Maasai reference material. Not sure why it ended up looking a bit Lucha Libre. By the way, the language of the Maasai people is Maa. Anyhow, this one was a really quick one and I think I better redo the synthskin on the arms a bit. The camo on the cloak is really, really basic too but works. Phew. Hope that you like him. The model isn't too amazing, I think that the head is a bit small BUT he should be fun to field and will fulfil an important role in my "army". IIRC, those guys can be Forward Observers, Repeaters, they Infiltrate and have Mimetism to boot which should help them survive some punishment. Pretty useful. So far I used a Meteor Zond that could just as well be called Kamikaze for that job. And of course this one's big, squishy, impossible to hide and so on.

Anyhow, hope you like those minis.

@Cutthroatcure: Thanks, man!

Ɛ́ntasʉ́pa lɔ́ mʉ́rrân! (= "I greet you, warriors!" in Maa, according to the Online Maa Language project). See how the last word looks a lot like Moran, the name of the infinity unit? So that seems to be in order.

ANYWAY, no more Maa or Infinity for now, here is a bunch of Nurglings:

I enjoyed painting these little fellas a LOT more than I expected. When I saw the minis in the store I thought "those look terrible. Way too smooth, just like every single organic plastic mini GW does nowadays". And they are indeed very smooth and textureless. That said.... look at those little faces. It really has an impact if you sit there, painting for hours and hours and constantly about 11 little faces smile at you. Happy fun times. I'm really thankful that GW made them smile. I mean, daemons even seem scarier if they find joy in whatever wicked they do instead of looking like they're constipated. Or they feel like they have to look extra-angry to scare you. They shouldn't have to take such measures to be scary. Just like a more humanoid face is ALWAYS more creepy than "standard monster Zilla face". But I digress.

So I ended up really liking those little rascals. And they put a lot of fun ideas in there too like how they hold on to each other's horns, two of them have their hands around each other's shoulders like two drunkards stumbling down an alley. Plus, one of them is pulling out the other's tongue about a metre or so which is very humorous.

You remember the ghosts that came with the Ghost busters toys? THOSE were freaking creative and this is what I want to see in daemons a bit more. Overboarding creativity and twisted fun paired with craziness and wickedness to give them some underlying unsettling qualities.

Oh well, anyway. Current Daemons are pretty cool anyway, I just got a bunch of Tzeentch daemons. I like them. Oh, I also got the Bad Moon faced Herald which of course is great. That old Tzeentch wizard with the moon face on that disc. That was weird and creepy and great.

Here's a picture of that model because I couldn't find the artwork. This isn't mine, I won't paint this one, it's from CMON and I just post it here because it's cool.

Anyway, I think Tzeentch is next. Expect colour. Hope that you like those Nurglings!

@Gitsplitta: Indeed.

@Cutthroatcure: They really look like they're having fun. Should have put a party hat on one or two of them.

Hello, I'm really, really tired today and a bit hungover. Lately I mostly painted pre-heresy bolt pistols which should show up in here soon.

Until then, I did some more painting on Tomcat Sergeant Major Carlota Kowalsky (who is finished now). Currently working on her Zondcat Moriarty. Whilst at it, I also updated the first Tomcat to match my current version of the Nomads colour scheme:

Thanks. I find 10mm to be a very convenient scale to play wargames at. The figures aren't too weirdly proportioned and you can still see some details but at the same time you can get a bunch of models for little money and they look great as armies. They also paint up very nice and quickly.

Let's snap back to the unreality of the warp:

Hey, here's a test mini for a bunch of Tzeench daemons I'll do soon. What do you think?

Just a question out of curiosity because it's a thing I'm personally curious about these days - if you see (in a blog or whereever else) pictures of miniatures from some manufacturer you're not familiar with or which are set in a game you're not into or familiar with, do you care less about them or even are turned off that certain blog or such if it doesn't only feature say GW/PPP/whatever miniatures? Or even the other way around - do you like to see very different miniatures in general or are you more likely to directly seek out sites which only showcase models of the games you prefer to play?

This is not about this particular painting log here, I'm just thinking in general and I would love to hear some of your opinions on this. Me, I love miniatures of many kinds but then I'm a painter guy first and play tons and tons of different wargames and I can't speak for the perspective of people who take a different approach to the wargaming hobby. Maybe it comes down to how much you're in it for the miniature aspect?

I don't know, but it would be great to hear some opinions on that. I thought I knew the answer but had to admit that my viewpoint of course is tinted in a particular way.

Loving that latest daemon! Very colourful indeed.

As for the question. I have to say yes, I prefer looking at models from say GW over some other more obscure company.

That being said, I really enjoy all the different stuff that you do in this blog. I think it is a mix of the painting style and just the variety in general. Actually, I find that I only look at the blogs that have excellent painting in them, I weep to see some of the great conversions that are out there given a really bad paintjob and I just stop reading after that. I think the reason must be that I am constantly trying to improve my own painting so that is what I look to for inspiration.

So yeah, a mix of stuff I am used to and any kind of model that has been painted to a really high standard is what I usually look for!

The Screamer is very nice Sigur, I'd like to paint some of those and try the Vallejo Fluo paints, seen some nice ones done using the Magenta on dark purple.

In regards to your other question I like to see a ride a range of models as possible but I'm a painter first as well, but then I expect a lot of people who visit the P&M Blogs are.

I expect it depends whats in the subject of your blog that pulls in different people, if you had say Blood Angels one day and Infinity the next I'd imagine you would get more new people visiting on the first day as the game has a wider player base / base of interest.

But once you have their attention and they see your excellent work they will keep coming back for each update no matter what your painting, you may even get them interested in the other games your painting minis for. I blame you for me buying Infinity minis

Well first Siggy let me shower you with praise again! ... are you ready? ..... got your umbrella at hand?......goggles?....O.K Holy snapping duck gak! I love that scheme and job on the screamer! I would as i'm sure others will too, want a tute or guide of some kind on how you did it and what colours and techniques? It looks amazing, I know you have so many beautiful models painted but that one I don't know why just makes me want it

and as for your question? as with any answer you'll get it's only personal preference but I won't look at a blog that doesn't have a model range I am interested in to start with, if they are painting GW to a great standard with some good tips and tricks birthing paint jobs that are individual then I'm on board for the ride no matter what else they disperse throughout as they progress, and who knows? i may be convinced by their work to jump onto another manufacturer for something different! but above all I really look for blogs that have a real sense of mateship in them, the author/painter really talking to the followers and being friendly and open to suggestions and offering help if asked for it, because we all look at these pics to improve and be inspired by, there are a couple of painters I've been impressed with their work but i've let them drop off the radar due to a lack of banter, they just pop pics up with a 'here you go' with no story or journey for them, you on the other hand give us a complete package! you have tier 1 painting skills that we all love to see, you are friendly and helpful and always have time for your followers and give us background and information on everything you paint no matter what range it's from!

so to condense it down a bit I think to begin with people will go to blogs with their chosen product in it and then as they see other models painted by someone they connect with they stay and expand their horizons for the future of gaming and painting

keep it up Siggy!

Ooh yes, a bit of interaction is something I like also. There are a couple of blogs on Dakka that I know full well that they have just been cut & pasted from warseer and that just puts me right off. Even more so when I ask a question and it gets ignored or I give an absolutely brilliant suggestion, they ignore me, then use MY idea anyway! Ahem, yeah, not cool.

On the topic of models from other lines? I'm always interested in seeing how other people deal with other lines, as I often find them to be a better reflection of how I'll get on with the models should I want to pick them up.

@Commander Cain: Thanks for your opinion! As for copy-pasting - well, I do that too, at least for the main bulk of my updates I use the same text on Dakka, Warseer, Bolter&Chainsword, sometimes Tale of Painters too. For more specialized kinds of forums I sometimes add more rules-specific stuff as well which would just bore people who are not familiar with say some historical wargame thingy. But of course I do the replies to comments individually, that's very important to me and a thing why I love forums more than regular blogs. The contact with other people is much more imminent and there isn't a sense of hierarchy as there is between someone who does a blog and others posting comments underneath his or her posts. I can understand that some people try to reach a wide "audience" by postingtheir pictures along with the same text in a wide variety of forums but if readers realize that they and their comments aren't really commented on any further or taken into account they probably won't return to that painting log.

@GiraffeX: Thanks for your opinion and the kind words. What Infinity minis did you get?

@nerdfest: Great, I really don't feel silly sitting here on a really nice spring day with an umbrella and diver's goggles on. The Screamer was painted over white primer (which I do a lot more often these days), some airbrushing, washes, drybrushing, layering. Eyes, Teeth, horns and so on were ...well, regular stuff. Thank you very much for the praise for this plog too of course! Very interesting hearing about communications / comradeship being an important factor to you. I'm sure that this is very true, just haven't read it mentioned before by anyone else I asked the question. Good point though.

@Dysartes: Thanks for the comment, good point.

@Cutthroatfure: layering, watering your paints down and stuff. Maybe glazes sometimes too but most of the time I'm too lazy for that.

@MajorTom11: Hey, hey, thanks for the comment. The Warhound took me WAY longer than I would have liked to or than it would have made sense financially. About three weeks I'd say including assembly and the base and whatnot. I did do some painting in between too though just to break out of the black-and-white for a bit.

@Dysartes: Yeah, reply numbers can be pretty erratic at times. The only thing I can suggest is posting Space Marines. Also - thanks for the heads up. It's not like I could just copy and paste bloody code between forums and expect it to work, can I. So what would the code for making text a link look like then? The URL-button on the top of the post composition box is only of limited use.

a casual look at the calendar revealed to me that tomorrow I planned to play SAGA. Could have sworn it was planned for the 29th! Given how this morning I had 1 point painted this got me and my Anglo-Saxons into a pretty bad situation obviously.

So over the past hours I added another 15 models.

...which leaves me at least with a halfway decent 4pts warband now with a makeshift-warlord, two units of hearthguard (in the foreground, with swords/axes) and two units of warriors (with spears).

Hope that you like them and that they'll do well.

I believe the problem was the presence of the " marks around the URL, Siggy.

Okay, first game of Saga done! 2on2, Vikings versus Anglo-Danes. Due to the fact that I didn't have enough models done to "make" Anglo-Saxons "work" (because many of their abilities are based on having at least 10 guys per unit) my warlord decided that it's the "Anglo-" part that matters and the second half is just decoration and might just as well be Danish. With no need for bigger units, I went for: Warlord, 2x 4 hearthguard, 2x 8 warriors.

First we took some time to explain the rules (the other guys had played a few times already, I've never had the rulebook in my hands before), then the setup:

My guys are the ones in front of the green hill.

Here's a closer shot of the evil viking horde:

Shortly after that, people started running and shouting and holding pointy things towards each other:

Out of a collection of really bad pictures, this might be the worst. Only trees in focus BUT at least a sense of artistry by use of the always-clever dutch angle.

On our right flank the Anglo-Danes advanced, Vikings advanced in all kinds of directions, in the end the Anglo-Danish warlord got into a bit of a trouble but that would have been remedied quickly.

On the left flank the vikings charged, my guys mostly stood around, trying to avoid the invitable at first because naturally for the first few turns I didn't know what the heck I was doing, so my Anglos were ordered to Brace for Impact.

In the end a bunch of bearded guys ran into each other, the biggest viking with the reddest beard fell over and we called it a night.

Interesting game, that saga. I'm really interested how it compares to LotR. The battle boards indeed are innovative, all the other dice rolling is kept simple but works. It's clear now how so many people use the Saga system with custom battle boards for all kinds of games and periods. As it has been said so many times before, it's a clever game and I'm sure it gets much more interesting when played with scenarios. So far I'm a bit surprised by the lack of many things like formations of any kind (units basically work as they do in 40k) or any sort of bonus attackers get for charging one unit with several units at once. The two combats are done one after another and are completely seperate. However, units get a fatigue marker for each combat they fight, nomatter wether they win or lose so maybe that comes in as a factor to handle that.

Seems like a nice game for pushing vikings and similar models across the table. Or Dark Elves. Or Aliens. Funny, I think if this was a fantasy-based game I think I would celebrate this possibiilty to adapt the game to basically any setting but as it's a historical thing it kind of irks me a little. But no, it's a fun game and I only got a glimpse of the whole thing so far. We didn't have any missile troops, any cavalry and, as mentioned above, no scenario. So I'm sure that these things will add some "meat" to the game. Basically, it's all about those battle boards and how you use those dice. It seems to be about reading the situation, the possibilities and using the resources you have (symbols on the dice) for the right things at the right time. Oh, and it's important to know your battleboard and preferrably your opponent's too. I think it's almost a resource allocation game in that way with miniatures depicting the state of affairs.

Hey guys, I know it's been a while. The reasons for this are twofold - first, there was just lots of stuff going on. I had to realize that over the past 12 months I underwent a certain transformation from being only a miniatures painter to being a wargamer again. I got regular weekly (well, almost) miniatures gaming sessions plus the occasional additional game of 40k. Add to this slipping into two D&D groups (it was a bit weird. Couple in the D&D group split up so two groups were forged as we seem to have a bunch of really enthusiastic people at hand) and the usual life stuff and painting time suffers. This is bad of course as I'm running Battle Brush Studios. :p It's not that my "professional painting time" suffers much but I start to realize that time is actually becoming the most important of resources. That and black primer. I have no idea how (even though I got a few theories. :p ) but I go through these cans like crazy.

The second reason was that I got the idea of cutting back on WIP photos. I don't know, I saw the other painter guys doing that way (because wip pictures give away SECRETS!!!1) and though it might be for me. Turned out it's not really. So I'll proceed doing stuff my way I guess.

Anyways, I'm working on Tzeentch Daemons!

Finished Screamers:

Kind of cool miniatures. The thing I love the most is their eyes and faces". This goes for all Tzeentch minis - They really look like they're out of a fever dream.

Finished Flamers:

Pretty cool models as well. I have no idea how you get so much variety out of a three figures box. Good stuff and I really like the colour scheme I cooked up for them. I was very unsure at first but I think it works.

Finished Chariot:

Well, lots of flames there. Again, really cool model I think. Yeah, it needs a base and a base it will get! Oh, and those little fellas too of course. You can't quite see it in the pictures but the gemstones on the disc change colour from yellow to pink over blue and green and such around the disc.

WIP Herald:

He's very WIP at this point but I'm sure you can see what look I'm going for.

I was very much looking forward to painting up this guy. That wicked grin, crescent moon shaped head... great stuff.

Now for the inevitable stuff of my own.

First, to get that out of the way, eight more Anglo-Saxons:

Nothing remarkable to report there.

...and here's my somewhat-close-to-being-finished Trukk for Gorkamorka:

The original plan was to have a trukk that's very bare-bones and add gubbins as the campaign goes on (Gorkamorka has this great campaign system built in, as you rememer). Whilst painting though I thought of things to make this one a bit more interesting and imposing looking so apart from the kustom exhaust pipe I added a kustom extragud 'eavy shoota (the old one jammed at the first attempt to fire last time so the Mek went over it again, added a targeter which plugs directly into his bionic eye. The ones amongst you who play Shadowrun will be familiar with the system), two big searchlights and a proppa bumper. Much better now. I'm also thinking of adding a big black skull and bones flag.

Paintingwise this thing is kept rather simple. Most I'll have to do is add some desert dust around the wheels.

Speaking of Orks, I had a quit fun game of 40k last Sunday. 2on2, 1500pts per player. Chaos Space Marines and Orks (which I had the honour to play) versus Space Marines (with some BA allies) and Sisters of Battle. The whole thing was about killpoints (which I'm not a fan of at all. I don't get to play very often but I almost always end up playing for killpoints). We also had one mission objective in the middle but it didn't play much of a role.

Our setup:

I brought a pretty-looking army because we were told that there'd be a battle report for some facebook page. That didn't happen though and I was the only one to take pictures. Never mind.

Here's what I had (Boars of any kind count as warbikes):

HQ: Warboss (Supa Cyboar, Klaw, combi-burna [that's a thing I always try to get in. First, it can come in very handy, second I like the idea of the warboss having some kind of flamer built into his Super Cyboar's nostrils)
Warphead

ELITES: 7 Lootaz (Gotta have those in every list I do. Often ineffective but I love the way they look and I scratchbuilt most of them myself so I better use them!)
Nobs on Cyboars (2 Klaws, 1 Big choppa, trophy pole)

TROOPS: 20 Shootaboyz (2 eavy shootas, nob with klaw and trophy pole)
20 Shootaboyz (2 eavy shootas, nob with klaw and trophy pole)
7 Nobz in Power Armour (Eavy Armour, Cybork Bodies, Painboy, 2 klaws, Trukk)
13 Gretchins (1 Runtherd)

FAST ASSAULT: 1 Buggy with t/l rokkit launcha ( really like the Buggy model to be honest. You only gotta replace the crew)
1 Buggy with t/l rokkit launcha
5 Boarboyz (Nob, Klaw)

HEAVY SUPPORT
1 Traktor Cannon (Kannon), 2 Crewgretchins (+Ammo Runt because I love the model)

Mr.Chaos brought two big mobs of cultists, one of them new hellbeast big things, a Lord, Possessed, Havocs and kept a Heldrake, Raptors and a tactical squad in reserve.

Mr.Space Marine brought two Dreadnoughts (one t/lLascannon/missile launcher, one Multimelta/Dreadnought CCW), full a tactical squad with Razorback, Vindicator, terminator Librarian, 5 Terminators, BA librarian, BA assault squad in Rhino, 5 scouts, something like that

Mr. Sisters of Battle brought a bunch of sisters, 2 Immolators, Retributas (heavy bolters), Exorcist, 3 Penitent Engines, Kyrinov, 2 squads of Celestias and two squads of Inquisitorial Stormtroopers (IG vets with Grenadiers doctrine).

Imperial Setup:

Not too sure if the guys used the allies rules right but anyway. In general, neither of us were too familiar with 6th edition rules. WIth 40k it's always the trouble that since 3rd edition the basc mechanics are the same but basically everything around them changes constantly so you've got four editions worth of rules which are basically the same but totally different in your head, plus some bits of 2nd edition still there, Gorkamorka and whatever else too. So we had to look up a lot of stuff in those rulebooks that weigh a ton.

What bascially happened during the game was that our guys got hammered (as in shot up on the table, not drunk).

As planned, my Warphead teleported himself and 20 Shoota boyz behind enemy lines and they opened up at the rear of the Vindicator. 20 Shootas, 2 heavy shootas and a Slugga - no damage what so ever, all because there was a tiny bit of fence in between which barely covered 25% of the vehicle. All cover saves passed. Pretty bad.

After a turn of getting the snot shot of out them, only the Nob remained of the Mob who charged at the Vindicator and took it apart with his klaw.
First: The Lonliest Ork in the World

...but he stood firm and in truly orky fashion sought to charge the biggest thing in sight:

...unfortunately one turn too late because in the meantime my horribly dangerous attack on the right flank was turned into a reenactment of the Charge of the Light Brigade 1854 by a dead-on Vindicator shell that wiped out my Warboss and his Nob Boarboy friends.

Overall, a very nice game. Unfortunately, the Chaos reinforcements never made it onto the table and my ally really wasn't familiar with his brand new codex but oh well. Good game though, very relaxed, the only slight fits of unhappiness were directed at GW's rules design.

Last but not least, here are a few figures I bought and painted for my sister as a birthday present - she got a new D&D character who basically is a badger-themed Gnome Druid so I got the very popular Gnome Druid from Reaper minis as well as two Badgers from Dark Sword minis:

Apart from that - no big news overall. Still getting things sorted from Salute weekend.

Last night I had a game of Starfleet Battles (by Mongoose Publishing), Starfleet versus Klingons. That was pretty fun. I only learned of the existance of the Starfleet universe yesterday and only did little reading on the subject matter. It's basically the "Forever War" version of the Star Trek universe. The funny thing is that in this universe, only the original series and, of all things, the animated series are accepted as canon. The game itself is simple but works very well. It's very much like Dreadfleet actually, played with BFG-like ship profiles and without all the random stuff. Or, alternatively, you could say that it's like BFG with alternating ship activation (I move a ship, you move a ship, etc. Then it's you shoot with a ship, I shoot, etc.). Works very well. The models look alright as well. TOS-era ship designs aren't too glamorous of course but very iconic.

Hope you like the stuff and the next update will definately be sooner!

Here you got the finished Thegns, adding another point to my army, AND the first character (or second, apart from the all-plastic warlord):

Apart from that I sat down and took a closer look at those Dark Age Warriors recently released by Gripping Beast. You can find the review here:

GB's Dark Age Warriors Review

Hope that you find the read interesting and/or helpful.

The additional 12+3 fellas add yet another point to my army, allowing me to theoretically field a full 6 points army! (which seems to be pretty much the upper limit as far as Saga goes).

Managed to get another character finished. As each god fearing Saxon requires some spiritual guidance please say hello to Father Godrick:

Such a fun miniature. You just don't get stuff like that in plastic. It's a bit like the sugarcoating (super-greasy in this case) on the cake. Like the Gretchin orderlies to your mob of Nobs. Not necessary per se but adding character.

Hope you like them and C&C are highly welcome as always!

@GiraffeX: Thanks and yup, all the shields are freehands.

Hullo dudes and dudettes.

There is still some more Tzeentchy stuff to do but I got kind of fed up with the rainbow colours and went on to Chaos(?) Space Marines for a bit:

Remind me of getting some other colour background next time. Those white guys on a slightly offf-white background don't really work all that well.

Hope that you like them still. They're WIP but the tactical Marines are basically finished bar for the backbanner.

Fantastic Eaters Siggy! I can totally see them battle crazed and in the thick of it, that weathering is what makes that chapter scheme!

so, do you have just the 2 armies you're working on at the moment for commission? World eaters & Tzeentch? or are there others we're not privy to! :-)
