If I recall correctly, they're cast to-order, so it's not like there's boxes of them sitting around taking up space.

Maybe not, but the amount of people who'd never buy a resin one but would buy multiple plastic ones is probably substantial. It's not so much the storage space as the possible untapped potential sales.

Versus the greater expense to make the model in plastic over resin.
I'm surprised that the Thunderhawk has been redone in resin though, the Stormbird must have sold much better than I thought to suggest to FW that the money would be there for an updated Thunderhawk.

That's what's kind of sad about this. I know I'm in the group that will likely never buy a resin TH, but I would still spend the same amount of money (or more), buying multiple plastic ones. So now GW doesn't get any of that potential money.

That's the thing, resin is much more expensive per unit to manufacture, it just has the advantage of distributing its costs evenly over the lifetime of the product, whereas plastic needs nearly all the money spent up front. GW have the capital, cash flow and equipment (all things that limit plastic kit production from smaller firms) to make whatever they want in plastic. Once the investment in a plastic kit was made, I'm sure initial demand would go a long way to offsetting the design and tooling costs, meaning, like the Land Raider or Rhino, they'd could make virtually pure profit on each sale for years to come.
If FW think there's enough demand to invest time into developing a new one at £400 a pop, there must be even greater potential demand if they can break the £200 barrier, or even get down near £100. I can only assume that the same dept that thought 150 copies of SW:A would do have radically underestimated the demand for a plastic THawk, and don't think the tooling costs would be recovered sufficiently quickly to warrant the spend.

It looks smaller because the sides slant inward on the upper fuselage. Thus making the cockpit look smaller. The sides of the old Hawk are straight up, making the cockpit farther from the edge, whereas the new one the sides slant right up to the cockpit.
And yes the tail looks like its missing the wingy bits (thats the technical term).

I'm not going to disagree on the current state of the GW forward planning team and their attitude to investment risk. However I would have been mightily surprised if the plastic thunderhawk came in at much under £200, and I would be just as surprised if the plastic thunderhawk had a long tail for sales, it would be all front heavy. That is almost the opposite for what GW wants for plastic kits that they are producing themselves?

There'd only not be a long tail if you assume that every Marine or Chaos Marine player bought as many as they'd ever need on release, that nobody started a new Marine army again and that nobody new started in 40K. We know that GW expect the majority of their sales in the initial release period, but a plastic kit can go on for years.
Regardless, as long as the tooling and development costs were recouped in a reasonable time frame, that would be the priority.

I'm not. It's an old kit that had some really bad mold wear and fit problems, and if they're going to redo everything to fix the assembly problems they might as well update the design a bit. It's certainly less of a commitment than making a plastic version.

As I'd rather buy one resin Cerastus chassis instead of 3 GW ones, I would prefer myself a resin THawk as well. I've had enough of GW's "glue two parts to make a piston" nonsense. Assuming I ever wanted to play marines in the first place. But I doubt that will ever happen

Is that the only reason you'd prefer a resin one, FW put more effort in to making things poseable? That doesn't have anything to do with plastic, that's just GW trying to make models cheap and quick to build, and it's probably not all that relevant to a Thunderhawk anyway because its movable parts are just going to be swinging doors and those swinging upper wing sections, which tend to work fine in plastic.

It's not all about poseability. Just see GW's MK3 Marine backpacks that come in 2 parts and you have to put quite some effort in liquidGSing them. I'm pretty sure plastic THawk would have xN more of those kind of parts where technically it could be a solid part, but they decide it to make it a two part part.
I also hate mold lines. Especially those tiny ones, where they happen to be in the most annoying/impossible to perfectly clean them w/o damaging detail places. Mold lines in resin, from what I've experienced, are more of a miscast, than a natural 'byproduct'.

Liquid greenstuff is junk, use something else and it'll make life easier I'm pretty sure plastic THawk would have xN more of those kind of parts where technically it could be a solid part, but they decide it to make it a two part part.
When they make 2 parts where you think it could be 1, it's almost always because of undercuts. To do undercuts in plastic requires slide moulding which GW do not use, some other companies do. I also hate mold lines. Especially those tiny ones, where they happen to be in the most annoying/impossible to perfectly clean them w/o damaging detail places. Mold lines in resin, from what I've experienced, are more of a miscast, than a natural 'byproduct'.
Yeah I also hate mould lines, but I usually find resin has more cleanup work when considered as a whole. Resin definitely has mould lines, especially as the moulds get older, sometimes the mould lines are better hidden on resin because of the way you can have small undercuts in resin. Also mould lines are less of a problem on big models with big flat panels, at least I find, pretty easy to clean up. It's the ones on fine detail or complicated curving surfaces that are a pain. The Thunderhawk should be more of the former.

More than that, it looks like the intention is to make a "bundle" that isn't there currently.
