So besides painting I have been doing a whole lot of nothing really. I am still waiting for my Dwarf Beserkers to get here from Avatar of War, as well as my spare parts for my broken down Landraider. I did put in an order for several Holocaust Judges (thanks Inso) who I will assemble with parts from the Grizzly Exosuits (mix and match) in order to build my Ogryns. All of the models will be assembled with the drill part from my Hardsuit model in order to give it a more mining related appearance.

The only thing I have been tinkering with a little bit has been one of the Servitors to belong to my Enginseer. Based off of Wall-E somewhat this is what I ended up with.

The model actually ended up being taller than the Enginseer himself and is about as tall as an Imperial Guardsman even without this model being based. The figure ended up being too big for me to use binoculars as its head so I used a targetting system from my broken down Landraider.

well i hope there is still some good news on the job front too....the good news of your hobbywork looks really tasty to me...

your first painted dwarf looks like you have nothing to fear from the paintgods...the flesh and the metals look very good to me and i demand a better look of said dwarf if possible...

the grizzly suit is THE thing for your army... sadly i for now have nothing to help you with... but will keep my eyes open for any opertunities...

now that i am back in action again here at dakka i hope to see more often updates or responses^^

Still doing the old, with less and less enthusiasm every day. And yes I hope the metals look good, it is your steampunkishness creeping in that I went with Dwarf Bronze over boltgun metal. Ill make a reason how the metal on their home planet is a different color or has something added in their refining to give it that color or something similar.

I am actually about to put the finishing touches on my first squad (painting wise, not basing)

hmmmm sounds delicious.... hope to see some pics of proof soon^^
well with your current perspective i totally understand your point of view...how are the general prospects of new employments in your country anyway? from what i´ve heard there is little known about unemployment or the recession in the netherlands... i expect the same misery there too as in the rest of the world, it just happen to be not much bad news about the dutch in our media...mostly only other grave news about some killing or other what i had heard once...

oh by the way, wall e looks really cute.... would be nice to see a test model at least primed and washed to see how all the different parts look together... one suggestion tho....maybe you could saw some fingers into the hands with just some minor strokes of a saw to the lego claws? would give a bit of distance to the lego look for those parts...

So an entire week actually went by without me posting here. So what has been going on lately, well I've been sick for starters and have been in a poor mood related to my ongoing trouble at work and soon lack thereof entirely. So what I did do is the following, I did finish off my first infantry squad (without the Heavy Weapon Team's weapon). The reason the metal is a bronze color has two reasons, one it suits the dwarf/squat models really well and two a friend of mine is into Steampunk and the bronze just helps bring that out.

The First Regiment

When basecoating and painting these I did make some mistakes but hopefully the next group will come out better. Some of the models basecoat is way too thick but in the end they turned out okayish.... After all I am nowhere near a paint expert. Im just happy to get something painted for a change

Vox Caster (I know one hand seems to be larger than the other....its not shush!)

Plasma Gunner

I am still waiting for my Penal Legion soldiers....as in the Dwarf Bezerkers from Avatar of War. I actually had to order some more paint in order to have colors for the beards on the Squats. For a Squat without a beard is like an army without beer.... Or something.

Oh yeah! that Dwarven Bronze really works! it fits for all of the reasons you stated.

i have to dissagree here a bit...the dwarves don´t look okayish.....they look coolish^^ i think you nailed the steampunky look quite to the shortstuffs!^^ i especially like the muted main colors...very sombre that way...

from what i see and that one is a bit of a downer for me the pics don´t give credit enough of your work...if you are able to better this then: pleaaaase!^^
one other thing that´s bugging me is the plasma effect... in my mind plasma is either blueish, greenish or if you are daring enough then purplish...(is someone is detecting a -ish pattern here...have yourself a cuppa of chamomile tea^^)
and if you still insist on the yellowish ^^ effect then i at least would suggest working up the color with an orange and then gradually work up the brightness to actual white...ish^^

other than that i just have to repeat myself and have to say that your "dwergen" are pretty impressiv!

so i have spoken!

I was trying to go for lava-ish and failing actually

Thanks guys appreciate the support.

At the moment I actually cut up one of the old plastic dwarf models (the static one with the raised axe, 1 posture only) to see if I can stick then inside some of my vehicles as pilots. I got like 6 of them that I got for free ages ago.

And sorry Vik I don't actually own a proper camera :(

argh.... that is too bad....(the thing about the cam...)

well if you want to go lava effect of the plama gun then i suggest starting to drybrush up to actual red amybe even a light black drybrush as a very final layer...and a badab black wash....i done some lava bases...this could be quite cool and new to make lava guns^^ probably more like a melter but there you go...
one thing i have thought about is the bases you are using... what will you do about them`? i have done quite some nice things with them with the use of air dry clay... dead cheapo... cant be beaten...no really, and you can sculpt almost anything out of it...just use it together with pva and there is no stopping you...or you could use FIMO... i did some nice sandbag barriers for my HW squads...which will one day see some paint hopefully...^^

sounds nice about the chopped pilothands... saw that trick pulled mostly with orks... would be a first one here too!

cheers, vik

So here is what I came up with as a backstory for my Squats as well as reasoning how they are still around when the Squat Homeworlds got hit by GW's Banhammer; I mean the Tyranid Hivefleet Behemoth. Let me know what you think....and be gentle damnit! Or else.....

Midas VI

Discovered by the Squats during their golden age when they were a part of the Imperium of Man. From their homeworld they supplied the Emperor’s armies with their advanced plasma based technology. In order to continue their expansion and advances in technology the Squat Homeworlds continuously searched for possible worlds to colonize in order to continue their supply of resources.
Midas VI was one such planet, rich in minerals but with a strong magnetic core. It’s heavy gravitational pull made it uninhabitable by humanity at large but to the Squat the gravity was only slightly above what they were used to. Located on the fringes of the galaxy outside what was the Imperium the Homeworlds sent off a small colonization fleet along with the troops to protect them against the unknowns of the fringe.
The Squats landed and colonized Midas VI and for a small time things went according to plan, their new colony prospered and the Squat Homeworlds were close to revealing their success to the Imperium as the Hive Fleet descended on them.
Midas VI was cut off from the Imperium ever since. Unsure of what occurred to the Homeworlds they have been reluctant to seek out contact with the Imperium, fearing they had chosen to continue the war that initially consumed their two races.
As far as they were aware they were the only remnants of the Squat race and thus strive to protect and preserve it at any cost. Having to fend for themselves they adhered to the rules and dogma they had been grown accustomed too. Their foundries and factories crafting new tanks and weapons for their own armies, converting industrial machines where needed.
Once again the Squat had become a race apart from the Imperium, isolated and yet enduring. The Tau emissaries were tolerated by the stoic Squats, they neither joined nor opposed their Greater Good and found in them occasional allies and the two races formed their own trade routes.
In the long years they have been on their new planet they started to reach back to the traditions of their forefathers. As their community grew they expanded downwards into the ground, almost all of the Imperial Architecture above left to the harsh elements of Midas VI. From orbit the planet looks all but abandoned and is mostly ignored by the sentient races.

At the moment I'm basing my old Squat models. I'll take some pictures of them later. Seems I have some models more than once though, which is not exactly a big deal.

I do hope that my order of superglue comes in soon as I'm almost out....and with it the superglue activator.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Right, so this has been a long time coming. To be honest due to my general lack of photographing skills I did not feel too confident that they would turn out alright. But as I am still awaiting a shipment of bits, glue and other assorted stuff I figured I might as well take the plunge and show what original Squat models I have.
So here we go.

Mole Mortar, Plasma Cannon

So here is hoping that I can continue my tinkering soon as my order of bits come in, at the rate things are going it'll be work on my Deathwing before I'll finish any more Squats. Then again...Deathwing is cool too. I got in my eBay order of a Land Raider, 5 Terminators and a Dreadnought and they look appalling. The Land Raider is even missing some pieces, I am not sure I will be able to restore it properly...at least I got a nice wreck out of it....maybe.

You have the mole mortar backwards. it loads from the top to fire the projectile down into the ground which tunnels it's way to the target.

...Squats!

Alright so here is my request: I would like to see what you could come up with in regards to a playable army using the models I have at my disposal. The army size I leave up to everyone to choose for themselves (if I get any takers that is).
I am aware there is a chronic shortage of Troop Transports amongst my owned models, but is mostly due to a chronic shortage of money in my wallet.
I am also still conflicted whether or not I will use alternative models instead of actual Chimeras. Especially seeing there are kits out now to convert official GW Chimera’s into wheeled versions which I like a lot more than their tracked cousins. This also goes for my use of AT-43’s Red Blok Dotch Yaga stand ins for my Basilisk.
Even though I have quite a number of Kolossus from AT-43’s Red Blok, I have already semi-abandoned them as viable stand ins for Hellhounds due to their smaller than expected size.
The reason I listed all of the models grouped as I did was in order to provide as many possible links to images of my army so you can get an idea of what you are working with (although most of you have seen these pictures before anyways).
Like most forums and such I would ask that you do not list the cost of every component in an army regiment, just list them with the total cost of the unit. For an Infantry Platoon for example the costs for a Command Squad, Regiment and Regiment.
Even though I have lost my faith in some of the models for my Squat army, I will list them anyways because one of you might have a good idea.

Lovely fluff matey, like the Midas touch with the golden planet , from the golden age. Seems very plausible , and is short and to the point , just like sqauts , not mincing their words

I have no ideas what a playable army would be , as i dont play , but i really like the models in the "other" section with the exception of the robogear walkers , which look a bit lanky for your guys . The valk is pure class as is the judge and the commisarr, the red blok stuff suitably suits your guys too. i dont like the new sevitor much though , mainly the arms .

Have you considered using the dkok wall breacher as your chimeras? maybe building a train cart to be pulled behind them ?

Made in nl
Virulent Space Marine dedicated to Nurgle

I have Neil, the main issue there would be money

The Robogear Walkers are really cheap and in person dont look that bad, they are bigger than an actual Sentinel though. But I do have two actual sentinels as well, I just semi drafted them for my second IG army, they can easily be brought back to Squat ownership though.

And thanks! New Servitor was made in an attempt to look similar to Wall-E it is the only one with arms, the rest is different (basically what I have left will get stuck on there).

I was quite happy with Midas as well, it was going to be a planet for a campaign I was planning originally but it kind of fell through. Liked the name so much I kept it.

Not been doing much hobby related stuff, even though my Dwarf Bezerkers finally came in from Avatars of War.

There is one hobby related thing I have been pondering and that is where to find Straw Hats....for some reason I cant shake the image of a feudal styled Imperial Guard regiment. Samurai Stormtroopers, Guardsmen lined up like musketeers..... Any suggestions are welcome.

Beyond that ill be around I guess....I do have a lot of reading to catch up too as well.

Everyone does that when playing with knights or similar minis. If I had a Bretonian fantasy army, i would be silly that way speaking with a "fancy brit" accent for the Knights, and a mock-cockney for the lower vassal troops.

I would suggest a line of Japanese/Chinese minis, Unfortunately, most are metals.

I'm sure I recall seeing some 25mm heads with straw hats, unfortunately my list of mini links was on my pc, which is still dead. Only one I can think of is West Wind Productions, but I'm fairly sure their samurai heads were just that, Samurai heads, not straw hatted.

Hello Everyone,

For those that still keep an eye on this space, yes it has been too long since I posted anything at all. I recently found a new job and have another week to go before I go back to working fulltime (thank god). So that will most likely lift me from my hobby slump that I have been in ever since my unemployment started.

I can honestly say there is more than plenty to do. I have the following projects in varying states of progress: A Nurgle Fleet for Battlefleet Gothic, my Emperor's Pride Chapter of Deathwing Terminators, my Squat army (of course) and both my Tyranid as well as my Death Guard need to be painted or re-painted.

My Dreadfleet is being painted up by a friend of mine in exchange for a set of counters, doors and board tiles from the new Space Hulk (of which I have two more sets as well as a complete game left). And of course as Warpath got released almost a week ago my order of that should come in soon as well.

Lots to do. I am hoping to get back into the swing of things....of course after being unemployed for a while I am indeed flat ass broke so if I run out of stuff I won't be able to replace them for a while.

Anyways, thanks all for sticking around.
