Not intending to start a debate on that point, as it'll just descend in to GW bashing / wish list creating off topic nonsense, but imho the models butt ugly, & doesn't make sense (check out the blind spots! All you'd have to do to take one out is sneak up on the sides where the driver can't see you and plant a bomb on the tracks). The newer, sleeker LR looks much more ornate, which made more sense to me given that they represented a tank version of terminator armour (rare, and damned good).

Just my opinion.

You obviously have never been in a real tank. The driver can only see in front of him. So tank have gigantic blind spots and have always been susceptible to infantry that get close..... that is usually why you try to operate a tank in combined arms formations with infantry for support.

Anyway back on topic not really sure I like the model all that much either. I like retro but I think there should be some recognition that some of the retro stuff was and still is pretty crappy looking.

I don't think it fits well in the ethos of current 40k. It fit when orks were tiny and on tracktrikes and tyranids had giant buckteeth, but it's out of time now.

I'm not sure what you mean by twice the size of the body... but the designers were probably thinking: "Hey look at all these people trying to track down the old model and paying sooooo much for it. Wouldn't it be great if we could get some of their money?" The Proteus is the greatest thing for Pre-heresy builders and players. When all is said and done GW will have sold many more Proteus tanks than Tantalus flyers... so they're obviously doing something to please their customers, even if you aren't one of them.

For me I love the Proteus... I've been dying to include a Land Raider in my Chaos SM army, but one of my goals with that army was to distinguish my vehicles from the loyalist vehicles without resorting to hull mutations or infestation or runes to get the point across, since I play an undivided army. For me I hate the aesthetic of Chaos being Imperial plus spikes... I want a different aspect defining the aesthetic distinction. I chose "age"... I use alot Chapterhouse's mk1 rhino-addons for my vehicles and lot of weathering and wear and tear. In that way a Proteus suits me very well... as it does for like-minded chaos and pre-heresy players.

I get it, you don't like the look. Its design is actually more practical in a number of ways than the modern Land Raider design, which many people have just as many problems with. This is the nice thing about a hobby that promotes converting... if you want a land raider that looks different from either design, make it.

In fairness to everyone both designs are utterly unrealistic and void of design logic. The old one just also looks very silly and toylike.

This is 40k we're talking about, isn't it? The vehicles have always looked like goofy boxes.

I don't think you should play 40k... you obviously don't like it.

Before I was saying this version is in some ways more practical, that doesn't necessarily mean it makes a whole lot of sense. It has more ground clearance than the more recently released GW tank kits. Why bother with the excess weight of running tracks up and around, instead of a lower profile?-I think its easy to justify that it has the shape it does because it was decided it needed to have more than a single entry point for the vehicle. All this doesn't matter, because this is a game and it is a toy.

I thought part of the point of Forgeworld was to produce small runs of vehicles that are old in comparison to the current versions e.g. Heresy era and pre Heresy items. If you are going with an old school corvus marine force then this would fit in with that.

Eurgh, I dislike all the old vehicle designs and this Land Raider is a prime example as to why. What an atrocious looking piece of kit.

Certainly true. A lot of people are just kind of miffed that they ignore gaps in the GW model or fluff lines in favor of more redesigns of models that people in majority did and do still find ugly or silly.

This has not been what they've done prior to the Badab War book release.

Prior to that, they were very vehemently saying they had "no plans" to do Heresy era stuff. They've clearly changed their minds though, as it seems to be a big hit for them.

I think that the GW, Citadel and Forgeworld model link should be clearer. I don't think that FW should fill in gaps for Citadel and I don't think that GW should release troop choices in army books if they aren't going to come out within six months. I realise that FW's growth has been organic and you can't aways keep those lines clear but I much prefer the newer WH forge way of doing stuff for their own books based on the GW games and their IPs. There shouldn't be any question of "I wish FW could do the Thunderwolves". Citadel should have released them by now. But they havent and it sticks another nail in the coffin for jumping on a new army because it's a gamble if it is going to be completed. That in turn makes designers look poor because we aren't seeing the army they designed as a whole because the models aren't easily available. Why should I need to go to Maelstrom to fill a gap in my beastmen army?

It isn't FW's mission to make stop gap model kits to fill voids left by GW. When they have its been more a matter of whimsy on their part. GW actively stops them from making kits that fill codex voids... when FW wants to GW has to "ok" it. This often requires FW to take circuitous routes to make certain basic things. For example the only way they did a conversion beamer techmarine was by having him as a special character. Most everything else existed in some form prior to GW allowing it into the respective codex.

As a DE player, that Tantalus is looking really sexy. However, it's just too darn costly to be worth it. I know, I know... It's Forgeworld, so what do I expect? I just can't justify it for the price is all...

It is pricey but I really need to see the rules before deciding one way or another. If it ends up being a fancy Super-Heavy with some fun tricks then its value starts to rise in my mind and $125 doesn't seem too bad anymore; it also seems pretty darn big seeing as how that picture has it mounted on a Valkyrie base.

I extremely want the MK.1 LR. I was pretty aghast at the price at first, but then I remembered I had the misfortune of living in Australia, where I can walk into a GW and pick up the standard LR for $110. $10 + shipping more isn't all that bad for such a nice model

no accounting for taste, I guess, but I've always thought the current LR was absolutely hideous.

Look it's simple, FW is doing WH30K and guess what? Its popular! To us RT era guys it does bring back memories from our youth, and plus a Pre-Heresy Army is cool (and Probably been stoked up by the "Images of the Heresy Book" GW released a few years back.)

I don't particularly like the MK1 LR, and would go with the current one any day of the week.

However, I understand it's place and purpose. You can't actually compare these 2 kits at all, despite them being the same thing near enough. They belong in completely different eras fluff wise and in real life, Forge World hasn't released it to contend with the current kit. It's been made as a nod to, and as a way of helping many people complete their own Pre-heresy armies which GW as a whole have found out is actually a really popular subject.

Although they are both Land Raiders, they serve a completely different purpose to each other and if I was thinking about a Pre-heresy army then of be on it.

On other news, that Tantalus is epic! Rules for the mahooosive Disintegrator Cannons anybody?!?
