Finished painting the gold. God-awful photo from my phone, but at least I can document that I've got it done. Next comes the white metal... then the blue, then the details. The nice thing about having them to this point is that they are painted well beyond a 3-color minimum standard, so I can comfortably field them in an actual tournament, even if it has a painting requirement.

Gits, if you're fielding a model you're still painting, does that mean you don't Dullcote it yet at that point? I'm always stuck testing things with unprimed models, and then shelving everything for a few months while I paint it... too worried I'd chip the paint job before sealing it.
Do you have a trick there, or are you just careful with them when using them before they're finished?

I don't usually worry about that, however... a quick shot of Dullcoat won't effect the overall look of the model (at least to the standard I paint to), even if I then paint over it & re-coat. It's more important to coat a metal or resin model before use than plastic, as the plastics are much lighter and less prone to scratching & chipping as a result. Automatically Appended Next Post:
OK, I think this will be my final color scheme for the tomb blades. This one is all finished save for the speckling on the blue and a few glowy bits here and there.
I *could* add a bit more blue... namely the shield things on either side of the driver's seat... but I don't want to overdo it. Thoughts?

I think he looks spot on Git's, just the right amount of blue to break up the gold.

Yeah, think that doing the shield things (Gits is right, that's what they're called ) would add too much blue to it.
Although...they don't all have to be the same do they? Do I recall the Scythes having slightly different schemes? Or is that just me?
Tell you what, I'll go back and have a look
Edit: No...just me then Hue differences, but no scheme differences...but then, you already knew that. Just ignore me, I'll sit in the corner here and keep the muttering down real low.

Yeah, I think it could use something to break up the mass of gold in the center.

I would go blue on those shield/ferring bits on each side of the driver. Like WF said, you need something to break up the gold. It won't be too much blue, and the blue is simply awesome.

I think it will look perfect once you get the glowy bits done and it will help to break up the gold a bit more

I'd not seen these models before you mentioned them. Are they not popular on the table?
Looking good.
As for the blue bits; try sitting them next to other members of the army and see if they look noticeably more gold / less blue than the others.
I would say go half way between the two and do some blue stripes on the shield bits, but I don't think Necrons go in for racing stripes so probably not...

Since you asked, I'd go with trying some added blue around the middle section too, to further break up the gold, as WF and Anpu-adom suggested.
Looking good, btw, and they'll certainly end up great either way.

The Necron Fast Attack slot is a very competative slot... with Wraiths and scarabs being the most popular and everyone having destroyers a-plenty from the earlier codex. Tomb Scythes are very flexible and fast... but are generally outshined by the other choices in the codex.

Thanks everyone for your ideas and opinions. I asked the most important person (Thing 1... since these are for HIS army) and he liked adding the blue plates. Here's how it came out.
I think it works quite well. Once the speckles are on I can call these done... though I'm really tempted to add a couple of small details, though one of them would be a real PITA to paint, so I may take a pass on that one.
I don't think the FA slot is as competitive as it used to be. No question wraiths are at the top, but we already have a full squad of six and I don't foresee getting another. We have a number of destroyers, but frankly they aren't very good now... so they're out of the running. Scarabs are still good, but probably at their best when you build an army around them. We don't have enough bases to do that yet. So, that leaves two FA slots wide-open for the Tomb Blades. They're dirt cheap jet bikes. Yes, you can add a bunch of crap to them if you have the points, but they serve their purpose with just the bike and a gun. Also, given the scenario... they could be scoring (if FA is scoring in the mission).

On a happy side-note... I seem to have figured out how to take good pictures with my phone. Can't use the photo booth with the black background as the flash wants to go off which messes up the image. Still, not too bad.

Sponge. Heavier w/ tin bits, then lighter with God-only-knows-what-they-are-calling-the-color-now. If I want a delicate touch, I sponge on the tin bits then use a brush to apply the brighter paint in specific places.

Cool Gits. What type of sponge do you use? Do you have to regularily clean the sponge as you are applying the paint or use clean areas? I'm just wondering if the paint would cake on the sponge and the the sponge would become more blotchy?

I have sea sponges for large areas...like the irregularity of them. Normal dish sponges work, as does the kind of foam you get from pluck-foam trays. I usually tear out bits with a tweezers to make them less regular. I rinse them several times in water (just like you would a cleaning sponge) so they can be re-used at a later date.
