Exactly. The pit is beyond human definition at least on purely realistic terms, there is no meaning to it, no inherent truth, just the fact that it is beyond what you can actually fathom as perspective based fact.

Many writers have forced themselves (at least partially) through the place I am talking about, but it still defies complete tangibility beyond the words and thoughts (images are not worth a single word here) that we would be able to understand. It takes many forms and occupies many facets, but it's core truth lies in the realization that it even exists at all.

If images did not affect us there would be little point in movies, books, television, newspapers, ect ect. They do effect us. It is duplicitous or plainly fraudulent to pretend otherwise. There is no balance and in turn everything comes back to a reference to anime or manga. If all one does is look at pics of human misery and foulness where would that lead to do you think?

It is like turning the heat up with a frog in a pot. If you do it really fast the frog jumps out (or you pull your hand off the stove) but if you slowly turn it up he'll sit there contently as he is boiling. You don't even notice that it is happening but it is just as sure as the water is actually getting hotter. In computer terms it is Garbage In/Garbage Out. Psychologists have known (through research and study) that what we view effects us. It isn't going to make a psychotic snap or anything that dramatic. It really isn't a question of insanity or sanity but more about social interaction and cosmology.

I don't need to put my hand in a fire to know it is hot and I don't need to stare at people defecating on each other or bloated dead bodies to know it is unpleasant just as people who have experienced real violence tend to find violence in media less interesting than those who are only watching from the periphery. SAW is only entertaining if you've never been kidnapped and tortured (or been close to someone who has).

Young people, through curiosity and wanting to feel adult, and others that should know better but are weak willed will be drawn to this kind of thing. The truth is if someone had something, anything, really to do, this stuff wouldn't be worth the time. That said we all have to make our choices and if someone wants to view it so be it.

Check out when I joined and do the math. I have a lot to say, and I enjoy 4-5 forums on Dakka regularly.

A career in forensics perhaps? I mean seriously though, someone who looks at images like some of the awful content on 4-chan all the time is bound to A.) have other more serious and pressing issues that need to be dealt with... and/or B.) for some reason has resorted to those images for various research... but that is honestly quite strange in itself.

I do think a certain amount of maturity is required to handle some of the stuff on the interwebz but most can be avoided quite easily by knowing how to surf the web in general. Search engines are quite stupid sometimes, but that is where filters come in, and I can imagine the only way to avoid bad stuff is to entirely avoid places like 4-chan in general. I can find at least 5-6 forums that represent each facet of the appropriate parts of 4-chan quite easily.

4chan is not the worst thing out there. But even an innocent browse in /tg/ can lead to some disturbing stuff (aka Sexy Farseers).

I should have been clear I'm not talking about seeing something on occasion, but when it becomes a steady diet of such things. I'm also not calling for the dissolution of 4chan either. Some of the boards can be quite useful. I just disagree that images have no affect on people.

I went to 4chan.com, but the sight seemed to be down. I don't know what all the fuss is.

4chan itself was down for several days last week thanks to a massive DDoS attack. They had to start a blog about it.

I don't know what's happening now because I am more interested in getting my Japanese router properly configured than what 4chan is doing.

If there is a ever a problem getting on just Google 'status 4chan' or go to this link.

Besides the anime and porn there isn't anything wrong with that offended page.

Those are just examples of what can go wrong with the human body and after effects of malicious human interaction.

Chances are you can find some of those in a medical textbook or criminal case files.

Why is it that after reading this thread, the first thing I want to do is go to the Encyclopedia Dramatica?

Just save your time and go to rotten.com. I believe that the encyclopedia took the pictures from there.

Rotten must have gotten a whole lot worse over the years then. Granted I never delved into the archives, but I do not recall seeing much worse than motorcycle crashes and the like. To be honest that is probably what kept me from getting a motorcycle.


What I saw on encyclopedia dramatica literally got burned into my retinas, and I am not a easily startled guy. I do find it interesting that I had such a serious reaction to the images on there, but what I find to be particularly disturbing I cannot even talk about on Dakka.

/b/ did not really shock me like I thought. If anything, it forces one to stop and think "why?", but then I just thought that people on the internet have too much time on their hands, and /b/ is the inevitable result.

Oh yeah, rotten has gotten worse. There's about 30+ pictures that the "Offended" page has in common with rotten.

Although seeing a guy who has stripped the skin from his face with glass shards or the guy who was shot "execution" style are also pretty pictures. Imagine the alien's head from the movie "Alien" except bloody and flesh colored.

The executed guy was still alive and missing his lower jaw and half of his face.

I've just read that some people on 4chan discovered the details of a 16yr old girl's life (boxxy was her online name) and posted everything about her after hacking her emails and youtube videos and then spamming the internet with calls for her to be murdered/raped/all of the above, creating images of her, sending hatemail out with her details on it.

I really do wish these people very great harm. I wish the internet had a 'reach through the monitor and skullcrush' option.
