I agree with what Luna wrote earlier in this thread: the site is all about the abandonment of inhibitions and sharing of information--in other words, the very epitome of the internet. 4chan is the beating heart of the internet and, as such, is a good reality check regarding what the internet is actually about: teenage sexuality, violence, and internationally-influenced anglophonic pop culture. Moreover, the *chans (and especially their /b/s) are like the final frontier of free expression--not tasteful, socially progressive, or even legal expression--simply free expression. If you want to understand the internet, you're gonna have to man up and start lurking the *chans, especially 4chan.

Yeah, found out that the alphabet on the top isn't exactly the letter the subject begins with. Luckily I was looking up warhammer so I avoided /b/ entirely.
I also discovered that the "yuri" section does not feature anything about this guy.
A friend of mine described yaoi as gay sex so I believed that they were both one and the same. For that unclarification I almost strangled her to death.

I disagree, once again. Something important and instructive is going on over at 4chan and some of the other *chans. I'd say it's like looking into the future but the fact of the matter is that it's an on-going phenomenon. I understand why people are afraid of it. Some people are afraid of the concept of the internet. 4chan is partly a realization of those fears--and it seems we're all still here. Deriding it is pointless. It's better to try and understand it.

I am really not sure what you are trying to say Manchu, the interwebz is a place to do a lot more than just scribble anonymously into a group spit bucket.
Sure there seems to be some good information there, but it also represents a sincere lack of concern for what they hope to accomplish... which is absolutely nothing besides being swarm like. Group mentality without any faces, how do you not see the problem with that?
I am not saying it should be shut down, just that it is most definitely not a place most people would enjoy. It is a cesspool, and not even a nicely organized one, call that whatever, but whatever.

@Orkeosaurus: No, but I'll think about it.
@Wrexasaur: 4chan is a fascinating place. Haven't you ever wondered how culture is created? Or how it is subverted and re-imagined? You can see it take place on /b/. I'm not condoning whatever message their hivemind communicates (and then immediately contradicts), but I think that it's far, far more than a cesspool. Unless, of course, you think that contemporary anglophonic pop culture is a cesspool--which you can certainly think. But that evaluation is practically useless. We have this (points to 4chan) to deal with, to acknowledge that this (along with material progress) is also the result of our freedom and creativity, and it's this that we ought to wonder about and examine more closely if we really want to understand ourselves and our reaction to all of this talk of freedom and wealth.

Very nicely said , my thoughts exactly .
If dakka*2 have the identical rules 4chan has , i guarantee you the outcome wouldn't be so much different.

Hmmm....
I understand what you are trying to convey now.
How do I say this....
Modern pop culture makes me sick to my stomach. There we go.
At no point in time were bars and pubs not a place to share this kind of rabble with your buddies? As in... on the bathroom walls?
4-chan seems to be infested with underage users, so if anything it seems to be an indicator of poor parenting skills the world throughout. I do not know where most of these kids are from, but I would guess they are mostly from the U.S. possibly Japan as well. Without any solid numbers (which are not available) no solid conclusions have been drawn and I pass no judgment on anyone. Besides this though, kids should not be on 4-chan, simple as that, it is just way too random, and there are plenty of focused forums that deal with specific subjects in depth, and with verifiable posters. I feel like you are simply glorifying 4-chan and affiliates to spread some anti-authoritative sentiment that has no solid base in day to day life. Yet again, I say that you can find any information you need elsewhere, with a lot less effort; 4-chan is for people who like to be anonymous... as if the internet doesn't provide a thick enough armor plate for their identity.
FFS on the front page the last time I went there was a... anyway. It is a high school bathroom where people learn what to avoid, and who gives the best... hmmmm.

I hadn't even thought of that, Luna. But yes--dakka would (d)evolve into 4chan if it shed a few rules. Just look at the WAR! thread in Survivor Games. It's like a little shard of /b/ has implanted itself into the flesh of dakka. That particular tumor has swollen to nearly 200 pages. Turtle pie is another example.
EDIT: @Wrexasaur: I'm not sure that any of us are really "outside" of pop culture.

Yes... yes we are. So have fun pretending that the next big thang' wont sweep the rest off the stage, because it has and will continue to do so.
If you feel like applying some sort of thin blanket theory to everyone in this room (and possibly on the planet, if that is what you mean) by all means, just do not expect me to take it at face value. On the interwebz you need twice as much proof to change my mind about something.
Using numbers is always great because I can just ignore any moral sentiment and just kick it into gear.

Good God, people are trying to apply logic and... goodness me... philosophy to 4chan. What has this forum come to?
|
People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

Maybe that's a good description of /b/: the point where lies and truth are the same.
@Wrexasaur: Haha, random wikipedia links just bounce harmlessly off of me. But seriously, we all participate in pop culture in one way or another. In 2009, there is no such thing as a counterculture. I'm not sure what you mean by "thin blanket theory" but it just seems like a way of not thinking about what I've said. As for morality . . . well, it just hasn't come up yet in anything that I've said on the subject.

Greatest human strength... sheer tenacity and creativity.
All thoughts are lies, and as soon as you can rely on instinct and logic, any lie can be applied as sincere truth and it will be so if people so agree.
If in my mind I fly, I sure as hell fly, just not as high as I would usually hope to do. Here is where tenacity lays, because we all have a little big-man complex locked in there somewhere.
It is the Parent in us, the Mother or Father who knows what is right, and can take any action needed to accomplish what they set out to do.
Bite, claw, and force your way into the light, because you are inevitable only stuck in your own mind, and your own thoughts, not what thought the "main" group deems fit for you to think.
Mmmmm.... tasty.

Someday you'll have to realize 4chan is logical.
because after all , its humans that made those posts.
You'll be surprise what humans are without inhibition , without thinking of doing good for future self gain , raw , ugly.
Yet just sometimes , you'll see someone that stands against the whole mess.
And you might be even more surprised to find out who have been creating some of the 4chan's Memes
