Goodness this treeman has taken some time to do- all day yesterday and today not even on the detail yet.
I had a question for you guys though- I have 4 treekin now I picked up a metal one to see the difference and I was wondering if I could have a row of 4 or 2 rows of 3?
I tried to buy two more today but GW don't sell metal anymore and the other shop had none in stock so I have 4 ... I made the new one ridiculous with loads of branches He's my Elder now.
I also have a doubles match next thursday in the day I'm rather afraid :S
You definitely shouldn't grow chest hair. Moving on...
Morgan Treeman looks like a boss, good job there. I'm more interested in your new treekin elder though! Love a tidy conversion and you did great, hard to believe it's your first try. You should definitely do some more conversions, the more the better in fact! If you need any tips i'd be happy to try and help, i'm still learning myself though, keep plugging away with the green stuff. Consider getting yourself some colour shapers, it's amazing how much they help.
It's interesting that you didn't see much of a difference between Metal and Finecast. Generally speaking, Finecast has a lot better detail. It might sound weird but the weight is a big deal to a lot of us. Maybe it's a nostalgic thing but there is something about the weight of a lead miniature that just feels right.
Anywho, keep rollin'!
Dear Joey.... How can you paint as good as me now and you have been in the hobby for like no time at all! You put me to shame. The new tree folk look fantastic and yeah.
Also as always love the wardrobe

There's lots of lumps and bumps you can't see as well at the back where I was practising but I watched some tutorials abut how to use it and was shown in the shop. I got on ok with it! It felt a bit like using bluetac and putting glue on it.
I admit I prefer them heavier- they feel too fragile as plastic. I found no difference in painting though it all went on the same.
Thanks Johnny! I spent ages on it. I wouldn't say my painting is as lovely on the elves though still a bit messy.
I've tried to put little flecks on the owl but it looks really odd!
...a couple of pieces of advice that i picked up recently.
1) Colour/Clay Shapers - These things don't just make sculpting easier, they instantly boost your options without you actually gaining any ability. I got mine on Amazon.
2) This is something i figured out which, to me, is equally as important a breakthrough as colour shapers. Mixing your green stuff properly. If you are using strips of gs like i am this isn't as straight forward as cutting and squishing. Here is my technique:
a) Cut a tiny strip of your yellow and blue components. - It's easy to add to what you've got or make more but there are limited options for excess.
b) This is the important bit, remove a small area where the yellow and green components touch. The yellow area(the resin) is hardened by the blue(hardener). This will start to happen in the packet and a hard, unmixable area will form between the two coloured components. If you carefully pull on each colour it will be obvious which bit has hardened and needs removed.
c) Make sure the two parts are mixed perfectly. If you haven't mixed it perfectly you will see streaks of yellow or pockets/lumps of yellow or blue in the green. This is common if you aren't doing part b. I could be wrong but i thing i spotted the odd streak in your sculpts. Why is this bad? A hard lump in your epoxy can ruin a sculpt, also, if you have consistent greenstuff it is much easier to achieve smooth finishes.
It barely scratches the surface but it's a start. Hopefully you can get something from it. If you have any specific questions just ask. I might have written something useful on one of my blogs but i doubt it.
Treeman looks good, especially fond of the sprites. I think it looks better doing them a different colour to each other. Also like how you have a transition in the bark from mossy brown to dark brown. Adds a little life to the fellow.
Treekin looks good, and impressed that you have chosen to tackle green stuff so early in your foray. It certainly helps with conversions and kit bashes, as well as casual fix ups. I might mention that GW now have liquid green stuff, which can help with a whole range of things, form fixing air bubbles in Finecast to filling gaps. Certainly worth a try.
As for unit size, I second the 3X2 formation. You get maximum attacks against a small frontage, which will minimize the return attacks against your unit. Hope your team battle goes well. At the very lesat it will get you more used to the rules and can be a lot of fun. Just hope your ally is not some tricksy Skaven.
Any other painting planned before the match?

Love the Treeman Joey...and for the record the old metals were much more a PITA for building. The Finecast Hydra is bad enough...now imagine a metal one.
And you've learned the joy of washes!
And to answer the rules question.
Yes, you can have a rank of 3 with one in the rear until you get more!

And in regard to the metal hydras, I have two, and I didn't find them that hard to assemble, but then again, I work a lot with metal. Just like the weight.

Lovin' the video blog. I saw you got a Wood set for your B'day (hope you had a good one). You can do some really nice stuff with it, say, you want a stand out character etc... My scouts are mostly in tree's made from the citadel wood. I got the idea from someone else (think it was Corai over at warseer) but why change what isnt broken? ^^ It looked awesome, so i used it... I guess what im trying to say is, when you see a model or modeling accessory, try and look not only at what it is supposed to be used for, but how you can use it to make something else. Here's a couple of pics to show you what i mean -
You wanted to see conversions and kit bashing so here's my own favourite brew of crapfromallovertheplacecomeironwarriorswarsmith, it's made from 11 different kits and was a joy to make and paint, don't use him like just looks like a dude
True. But I, like Joey, hate assembly, so i get it done as quickly as possible. Sometimes i miss some mold lines. The one here is pretty easily fixable, just havent gotten to it...

Oh wow the scout looks amazing- how did you get the material section like that? Blending or washes- I can't get mine looking anything but block colour on the front. I much better on the capes with lots of room but on small spaces I get messy
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also love that conversion- he looks lethal! Is he holding a machine gun with one hand?

"The material section".....hmmm. The tunic was washes, cloak was blended.
The tunic/boots etc were really simple. Basecoat Dhenab Stone, then for any green bits wash with thaka green. Wait to dry. Wash green and brown parts with Devlan. , You drag the brush over the edge of the place you want shading to be. It forces the wash out of the brush and concentrates it there. Its kinda hard to explain how to apply it. Would be easier to show you what i mean. After that is dry, its just drybrushing bubonic brown (concentrated on green parts) and bleached bone (concentrated on brown parts). Can make a video of this if it will help...
I chose this scheme basically because its so fast, and i wanted them done =)
Have fun!

A video would be super helpful if you have the time. I've been trying that today and I've just made it look messy :S
I've also completed my tree's but it's taken forever to do the base.

A quick video about my thoughts on my first month and questions I've been asked. I ramble a ridiculous amount here. The t shirt is for you Johnny.

Well done, Joey. Ten videos in the bag and going strong! I found this yesterday or the day before or something... http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC940CEB6790444CF&feature=plcp Nice little playlist you might enjoy. It doesn't apply to me and i had it playing while i was doing something else but it might have something useful in it for you, i don't know. The guy is a great blogger anyway and i sent him a message to check out your videos when he gets the chance.
Edit: Since you are 10 videos in, what are the hopes on convincing you to pick up some 40k? If i remember correctly, Space Puppies were on your mind? Well they just got a nice supply dump of new miniatures, as did the Tyranids. Space Marines of some kind are the best first army for 40k though. So, what are the chances of seeing you paint some serious armour soon? I can certainly help with a 500 point list, you can get the whole lot, 500pts of very competitive vanilla marines, for £109.00 on the nose. Not too shabby!

It's the next thing on my list after these wood elves. They won't be my main army but I will certainly be painting a few up and checking out the difference. I like the tyrnaids - they remind me a lot of zerg though all I can hear when I see them is "NEED MORE OVERLORDS" so the space wolves where more up my street.
That being said I wanted to buy one tyranid model and try that wood varnish thing- they looked amazing!! I think it could work well for dryads.
Great rambling video Joey and no worries about what folk ask.
23 ain't old. I'm nearing 28 and know folks into their 50s who do this sort of thing. I started younger than you as well.
With regards to painting? Don't worry yourself too much. What you are doing is good. You are going to improve and you're going to improve well. I've even included a mini montage of Saurus, starting with the first thing I ever painted and going to my most recent things.
With regards to the rules? We got you covered. Trust me. I've been told I'm tournament level, just too broke to go to them. A hard life, but we can fix it.
Spoiler:
First thing I ever painted. The results are less than impressive.
About a year later. Many more colours, the eyes are still derp and the gold is a bit haphazard. Ack.
Yet more years later. Much improvement.
At least my basing's improving, right?
And then, several years later...
I'm still a big kid with Lizardmen. Honest.
