Work on dialogue so as it doesn't seem to budget?
Cheap mannequins make good substitutes at range if you have to have an exploding head or something.

Also turkey sausages, they used them in one of the George Romero movies.

I forgot to mention that our budget is about 40 American dollars, and none of us have been to film school, besides our narrator. However, we have made an incredibly successful version of the 40k book Fifteen Hours, and even had an accidental special effect gone right in which the ork warboss's face was 'shot' with a prop gun and the stuffing under the mask spilled out, looking like brain matter all over the ground.

Probably going to have to be really short then.

Only about 5 minutes, if not less. We're going for a style similar to Cameron's Aliens movie. Using makeshift props (pvc and dental floss for hydraulics on the cryo pods) is what we're going to do.

That's the best way when on such a tight budget.

... When you are spray-priming that brand new stormraven and the can runs out of paint and sprays blobs of semi-dried paint from inside the can onto exactly 1/2 of all your parts... and then you can't get it off and paint over the melted looking surface anyways... =(
