I feel like the motion of the characters just doesn't seem real enough, I don't know how to explain it, but they captured it much better on the DoW II trailer. I feel like they don't do justice to how massive and bulky space marines and their equipment are supposed to be. For example, to give an impression of how massive and awesome a bolter is, I think it should look heavy in the hands of the user and have a lot of recoil to indicate "this is a big freaking gun!" What I see in the trailer annoys me because they are flailing them around like they're little water pistols. pew pew! Also I think its funny how in the trailer their power armor doesn't do crap against bolter fire
Marines DO flail Bolters about like water pistols.
wait till they do a guard movie and show Guard alongside SMs or Bolt pistol wielding commisars who will add a sense of scale to the marines.
having Guard and marines next to each other always brings things into perspective.
Power armor, in the fluff, is fairly easily penetrated by Bolt rounds at close range. helmets are weak spots in any armor so the head shots in the movie are pretty accurate.

But shouldn't power armour be able to compensate for the weapon recoil? That's what allows space marines to be so accurate and also allows them to carry heavy weapons. Granted you should see some recoil with a heavy bolter, but with all the servos and suppot the power armour gives I doubt you'd see any recoil with a bolter. Looks a bit odd I know, but I guess it's like hearing sound in space battles in films/TV shows for so long, then seeing Firefly where there is none. It seems odd as we're used to the sound, but it is more accurate without.
If we saw a Guardsmen firing a bolter the recoil would probably take his arm off!

I dunno. Not really very impressed with it, mostly due to the visuals. Now granted, I'm interested in the storyline - from what I remember hearing about it early on, it involved a sort of rescue mission to try and save some Imperial Fists from Chaos, of which only one was still alive? If correct, then that seems pretty neat. But the visuals...
Really, I would rather have had the story be another Black Library book instead of being put to shoddy visuals like that. Say what you will about "We're finally getting a Warhammer movie!", I'd much rather get one that actually looks nice and wait for it. This one just looks old and unpolished. The movements are off, the way their faces move when they talk is strange... There's just a lot there that makes me uncomfortable. It's a shame, because if it looked nicer I would have certainly bought it. Now, though, I think I'll pass.

Indeed, I've been talking gak about how the movie looks, but if it had a realistic price I probably still would have bought it just to see it. As it is, $40 for a movie of comparable quality to old-ass, made-for-TV CGI cartoons? How about no, GW?
And who else thought that "What's New Today" post was funny? "Look at the textures on the armor!" lol, textures? It's a flat, smooth surface with some gray and brown crap painted on it. They'll lie right to your face while reaching for your wallet it seems.
burning_phoneix wrote:Wait, are they actually going to release a standard edition of this movie?
I don't think so. To be fair they haven't come out and said they won't, but they've only been talking about the "collector's edition", which is a limited run. If they were going to do a real release then one would think they'd have done that first, and then released a collector's edition after...or done both at the same time like most people do.
They might just be waiting to see how this does before doing a standard release, but that doesn't make much sense to me. I mean if you want to see how well the movie sells then the standard version would make more sense, since usually casual buyers don't fork out cash for super-expensive collector's editions. Like it was said earlier, this is just going to put people off, and then there won't be a standard release.

I think the movie still on What's New Today looked pretty good. I mean, how textured can you expect them to make power armour when it is essentially a smooth surface? You can see the slight marble effect on the power armour, particularly on the forearm, then as you said the dust and grime are layered on top. The light source on the figure seems good. The gold decals look rather nice too. Just wish they hadn't gone with dark eye lenses, would look so much better if they were brighter.
It's all a matter of taste I suppose, but the more I see the more I think Codex pictures did a decent job. I for one am flying the flag for this film, but I think I could be the only one

In all seriousness, it isn't as bad as Beast Wars...but yes it's no DoW either. I think, so long as shipping costs isnt too high I may order it. After all, if this takes off, they may get more funding for a state-of-the-art style one (think Avatar quality graphics, only grim dark...

What do you expect?, thats the age group 40K is aimed at - when you grow up you have to play WHFB and D&D.
and finally you get fed up with DnD's complicated rule set and come back to nice, relativly simple 40k.
naturally you sold your 40k army and so will have to buy another one

the Drop Pod scene was pretty cool, but they were coming out of a Emperor class battleship not a Strike Cruiser or Battle Barge.
the acting is also very cheezy in those old fan-fic movies.

Lol, nit-picking aside, I said IMO. Lighting and particle effects were far more dynamic, and I like the marines didnt look like ken dolls, although I do like the more heroic looking proportions of the DOW2 models.
p.s, maybe he didnt see the orks and was moving the squad to high ground for max fire coverage, then oops, found out he probably shoulda checked it out first?? lol
No, he saw the orks. Otherwise there would have been no ducking, covering, shooting, repelling of assaults, couter-assaults... whatever. You know this.
I find it rather interesting that most of the movie discussion has been a back-and=forth on the animation quality. When I first heard about this movie, my first thought was "HUZZAH!" and my second was "Wait, remember what happened the LAST time I got this excited about a movie? The world got the ing fest that was the ing Eragon movie."
So, is everyone assuming that they at least got the basics of the universe right?

Eragon is not a bad little movie. I've seen it multiple times late nites on USA and SciFi. Never saw it at theatres.
Its on a level with Dragonheart and Narnia. Better than Clash of the Titans(2010).

Yes I read the book. It was not as great as the hype made it. Reminded me greatly of the Pern dragon books.
movies based on books are always different. Fact of life.
Different media require different approaches to the same story.
So changes do not phase me.

If by "different approaches" you mean a drastic deviation from the plot, the removal of many vital items, the utter lack of important characters, locations and species, the changing of weird things that didn't need to get changed...
I still worry that something like that could happen to the Ultramarines movie.

The biggest problem that I have is that I'm torn over whether or not to support it. On the one hand, it's clearly shoddy worksmanship, and I'm afraid that buying it will sent a message to GW that quality isn't important and that this will become the standard of animation if they decide to make another.
But if it's left unsupported, then it's pretty much a guarantee that there will not be another movie made, ever, and I'd really love to see a high-quality 40K film. The only way that'll happen is if this ships enough units and brings in enough profit to have them say, "Hey, we now actually have a decent enough budget, we can make one that looks really good now!"
So yeah, that's my biggest problem with the movie. Clearly, it's not a high-budget film, and it looks it; I really don't feel like spending that much on a cheaply made film. But I really want it to be a stepping stone towards a day when we can get a film with Blizzard-level graphics.

Granted, I've never read Eragon but from people I've talked to it was pretty much Star Wars Episode IV but in a Fantasy setting, and the Dragon was both R2 and the X-Wing.
Anyway on the case of the Ultramarines 'Movie' I think Relic could have done a better job just using re-skinned Character Models from DoW 2, or the Character Models from Warhammer 40k: Space Marine.

Then you can be disappointed in Canada. POP6 rendered the CGI for this film and they're a Canadian based company.

I may be able to get past the relatively poor graphics if the narrative and voice acting are up to snuff, but seeing as how they didn't go all out on the graphics makes me believe that the other parts of the movie will let me down too. I'll pass
They need to get the studio that created the FF7 movie. Or, in my fantasy world, Peter Jackson and Niel Blomkamp would get their hands on the property and show the hollywood studios what they passed up when they nixed the Halo movie. (That will ALWAYS bother me)

the Story and acting will be very good. they have some high end actors and one of the best, if not the best, BL authors there is writing the script.

Coming from a career in professional theatre, I will admit that the voice actors for many GW products are good, but they aren't working with a full length film, or fully developed characters in most instances. (which is not their fault, just the nature of the short clips that make up a game scenario). There is a Huge difference between acting in either format. Hopefully they make the transition well.
As far as the BL authors, its a similar deal to the actors. a Novel =/= Screenplay. They are two Very different beasts. In novels they get to describe the action with their narrative, while in screenplays, the narrative has to carry the action. That's why many book to film transitions don't work. On film you can't describe the weight of a bolter, or the heat from the barrel after its been shot into the rotting stinking corpse of a Plague marine. The Cinematography takes up that mantle, and all you have left is monologue and dialogue. To a novel writer that can be very limiting, and to a cinematographer, very difficult to capture. I'm not going to diss the BL writers, but this is an area that many professional writers have failed to make a transition.
Honestly what worries me is that this will not do well, and that will be the end of 40k cinematic projects, or the opposite. This will do well commercially because fanboys eat this stuff up, but its not really on par with film in the 2000's thus giving them an excuse to put out under produced swill that will net them a profit but leave the fans not entirely satisfied.
I know how easy it is to fall into the trap of "its good enough" in the entertainment business, whether its because of money, time, or inexperience.
I want this to succeed, but only if it really does deserve to. I will see it at some time, but I'm not going to relent to the GW price unless its something I want to watch over and over.
