Latest off the bench - another building! This is probably as close as I get to building things that aren't wrecked...precision and clean builds are kinda my greatest weakness haha. Even on this, the spacing of the triangle bits is off...

Had a bit of a rough time filling all of this flat area with enough texture to keep it interesting. Ended up painting the green in 3 layers of progressively lighter stippled greys, and the reds in a cream color which I hit with scrunched up newspaper while it was still wet like the spray paint street artists do. Then used a green then muddy brown wash on the grey and a red then dark brown wash on the cream. Turned out alright!

These last two photos are of the core materials used for the building. I tend to build this way when the building doesn't need to be opened. Saves a lot of time and work - plus the box shapes usually give inspiration for building shapes. The round bits are the punch sheets from a board game - always love using those!

Comments and constructive criticism welcome and needed as always

Not where I should be

Excellent results. Really nice finish, worth the effort I think.

KNow where you are coming from on the "tidy" thing.

Oh and strictly from an engineering/architectural point that roof on the little bit on the side is really bad slopping toward the building, all the acid rain will get to the building at that point!

Hahaha, good point on the roof. There must be some sort of industrial downspout

I've been told over on our facebook page that I don't take enough for-scale shots , so here's one with my favourite for-scale mini :p

Nice little build.

Just the sort of quick project I often intend to build, and then I get carried away and add interiors and mechanised forklifts to it...

The army- ~2295 points (built).

@Dr H - hahahaha, I definitely can relate. I'm realizing that I really enjoy weathering and trying out different painting techniques, so that helped motivate me to get to the paint stage :p

@ MajorTom11 - yep! I've used their sprues before - may have even done a post here on it. Not sure. Best parts on that sprue are the corner bits so I don't have to be as exact when I line things up

Finally made my way here. Amazing work. I'm a huge fan of terrain, it's my modeling passion and when I see excellent work I like to offer acknowledgement. People that have the vision to see a sub-thermal plasma generator in a broken DVD player and an electric junction box always interest me. Do our brains work differently because we take inspiration from items in the recycle bin? Or perhaps we're simply the ones that get excited enough about the idea to actually build it. In any case, it's the modeling skill to build it and artistic ability to bring it to life with paint that truly defines the finished product. You are in good company on Dakka Subbed and looking forward to whatever you share next.

Thanks for the kind words Skalk - I think it's just the ability to conceptualize in 3d and execute that makes terrain makers terrain makers. Some of us just have more of a tendency to be junk builders :p

More terrain coming soon. Working on a new piece this evening

Mid-weathering on the latest and greatest.

Used grey primer here then painted a streaky cream undercoat with a chip brush to give it texture. then the usual 47.5 washes/glazes

More photos this weekend hopefully. Been busy making props lately for a local escape room, so the terrain has suffered somewhat

Here are some WiP shots to tide you all over while I finish up the detailing. (side note - anyone know a easy way to model cigarette butts for 28mm scale :p too tiny.) anyways

Did the cutout for the sign with a knife and regretted it... really would like to get a laser cutter...

Some people were asking me how I got the streaky look, Did a grey primer to dull the finished result, then did a cream streak with a drier paint, then a fairly opaque wash of a dusty red then a translucent brighter red then some touchups here and there with a really thin yellow ink to add warmth in where I killed it too much.

Here are the few photos I have of that process...it's hard to remember to stop and photograph haha

Use 3 different brands of baby food caps for the roof vent - the perks of having nephews. Get to hang out with them and steal their food caps then send them home for their parents to deal with haha

And finally here are a couple slightly more recent photos of some of the interior details:

Next post should be the completed project!

This build is probably 90% finished - just need to do a few touchups to some stray drips and add in some paper litter and such .

Really like how the rounded top turned out

brushed some of my dental plaster into the nooks and crannies then used different colored washes to set it. takes paint really well and makes for some good nasty grime buildup

interior shot:

three different brands of those overpriced child food packs - good for vents though!

little bit of a perspective shot there:

the fruits of my painful labor with the utility knife haha

and of course, some shots with the wasteland centaur for scale - I think he needs a name at some point:

Probably my favourite photo of the centaur:

I've had quite a few questions on the facebook page regarding the streaky bits, so I've copy/pasted the method below fo inquiring minds.

feel free to leave more questions, comments and criticisms

---------------------------------------------------------------------
streaky method for this build:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
brown spray paint primer, white spray paint at a steep angle over that while still wet to get a drippy warm grey color. once dry, streaked with a cream paint that's pretty dry - not drybrushed, more like left the paint open for half a day to get this texture. Also have been known to mix plaster in with cream colored paint, but that gives a slightly different result.

then mixed an orangey brown with some translucent red and did the darkest streaks. The other streaks were done with thin greys. browns, blacks and such.

Final touch is to take a translucent yellow (i used vallejo for all the translucents) and thin it REALLY thin and use it to add warmth to the red/brown stains.

Interior staining was done by priming in the same way, then when dry 2 or 3 rounds of just brushing on thinned grey paints. then a few brown streaks then flicking on some darker colors here and there.

Oil stains on the floor are a puddle of thin black paint then, when dry, a puddle of dark brown on top.

Been quiet lately around here. Most of the builds the past month has been work for an escape room that I'm doing the setbuilding/props for. Can't post too many pictures of that unfortunately.

Did manage to get time to finish up a piece of terrain that I've had sitting around half finished for a while:

Here is one WiP photo of a couple of the props in such poor quality that I don't think it'll spoil any secrets

Hey all! I have clearly been AWOL from dakka for what...a year? maybe more? We've been building escape room puzzles and doing set design, so not much time for miniature work and LOTS of secret projects that I can't post pictures of :/
While doing the large scale work and learning all about wiring and fancy electronics has been a blast, I kind of miss doing small scale modeling work.

I have a big pile of plastic bits that I have been saving for an epic build, so hopefully pictures of that will be arriving shortly. Also some of you are very persistently trying to get me to do more commission work, so *maybe* something will come of that soon as well.
The latest update on the modeling front, is that I will be on a panel of judges for an international terrain contest! This is super exciting and the contestants are already piling in.

This contest will be judge by myself and 4 other big names in the terrain and crafting world. We're all super excited to finally pull together what I believe will become the gold standard for competitive terrain building and will doubtlessly bring out some of the finest terrain from builders around the world.

The link for more info on the competition is here and the here is the Discord server for this competition.

Check it out and watch this blog as well as our Facebook page for more info.

Good to be back!
