Thanks guys I appreciate it. Also, (I will add this note to the 1st post) I do really appreciate constructive criticism. I think shared knowledge and experience a big part of the community and the reason sites like this are so great, so bring it on!

Dooood, this is a great blog! As someone who's always dreamed of a board chock full of terrain, you're inspiring me to actually get out there and start making some for myself.

Leaving for a wedding this weekend, so here's a quick update. Went ahead and did the ground base color. Here's a picture of it in progress to show the technique I use. I Paint the entire thing (or an area at a time if it's a large piece) then while still wet, I do some wet blending of 2-3 other similar colors into the base. In this case the base color was a medium-dark brown, then I blended in a burgundy red and an orangy tan to give it variation. These colors tend to work well for me to get a reddish desert/martian sand look to the soil.

When I'm done with the base blending it tends to look like a crappy camo paint job, but once the drybrushing is done it just looks like variation in tone which is hard to achieve after the base layer is done. Plus it's easier than trying to use 2 or 3 different palettes for drybrushing.

More next week! Oh, also, I have a photo of the beginning stages of the next project I'm saving for later this weekend. Hint: it's going to Warmachine terrain!

So, I got sidetracked with a side project - I was making a picture frame for my wife's work - they have a wall for employees to put up a picture of themselves in a custom frame...hers is now the best Ill put up a picture of it.

Back to the project on hand - I have so many things going at once right now, so I decided to paint the Maelstrom's edge stuff very simply. Albeit a shortcut, it's really part of what I was trying to accomplish with these sprues - to see what I could make in minimal time with minimal effort or using special skills. So basically - what could the average gamer come up with and would it be as cool as it seems it would be.

I gave the ground a few layers of drybrushing, then gave the buildings a wash with a dirty brown then an off-white drybrush to clean it up a little.

The result is pretty impressive considering. It took about 30mins to build each building, then another 30mins or so to paint them. So for 3hrs of work we end up with these pretty cool little buildings! Kudos to Maelstroms Edge for their idea and execution. It's important to note that in a few of the photos there are some air bubbles in the pieces - that piece is NOT from the sprue, but is a (sloppy) recast because I ran short on pieces - always go to the Manufacturer for quality!

Time to throw these up on eBay then move on to the next piece of terrain........

----------------------------------------------NEW PROJECT START: Cryx Necrotite Pump------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Making a necrotite pump of sorts for extracting the liquid form of the aforementioned substance (shhh it exists). I wanted to add in some sweet green LEDs but I'm not sure where the best place is to get what I need. Not being too familiar with calculating ohms for resistors and such, I was thinking about just getting the pre-wired ones, but then I have to figure out the best way to do a power source...in the end I just decided to wait for another project.

So here's the basic startings of the base rocky area and the board-reinforced dredge pit.

I'm sure many of you are familiar with using wall filler a.k.a. spackle a.k.a. drywall mud, but I included a picture of it's application. The stuff works very well for filling in gaps in things like this and sands very well (outside or in your worst enemy's house) to give a nice finish. I'll probably have to drill through to add in the supports for the pump, but that's later.

Also, I'm struggling to find proper inspiration for cryx-styled terrain. There are the shape on the jacks' armour and such, but not really a lot of buildings or architecture out there. The best I can figure out is that it's sort of like deiselpunk meets pirate meets 40k necrons...soo, we'll go for something like that. I'd love to hear any ideas or see any photos that anyone has lying around!

More photos to add soon

So i sort of just went to town on this thing - gluing on bits and trash and whatnot. I built the base of the machinery from an old fire extinguisher handle/cap and used random stuff for the rest of it. Still think it needs more to make it more cryx-esque, so we'll see how that goes. Maybe some more pipes and the like...

I also opted to make the pipe broken away from the machinery with ooze spilling out and some creatures I built crawling their way out to wreak havoc in true balrog style. Should add some interest and story to the whole thing.

Finally am happy with the structure itself after a few more modifications. I sculpted some horns/spikes from sculpey and added some exhaust pipes for the machinery. I also added jets of flame coming out of the pipes - I used some old paintbrush bristles that I had used for epoxy before...Not sure how that's going to look, so I may end up pulling them out - we'll see.

Also finished texturing the base with a lot of PVA and dirt, sand, gravel, dental plaster stones and sawdust.

Once that all dries I'm going to figure out how to do the creatures and slime puddles.

All done here. After these photos were taken I did a little more edging, but this is about it! I'm pretty happy that the hot glue/zip tie creatures actually turned out well.

I'd really like to do more of this style if I get time, what else would you warmachine fans like to see?

NEW Project Start: Marks of Chaos Set
_______________________________________________________________

Alright, a while ago I drew out an arch utilising the symbol of chaos and left it on a shelf...well I'm finally going to do something with it. I was thinking about doing a full board, or maybe a modular one, but I don't actually have a commission for it (this is just a one-off, sell on eBay type deal) , so I decided to make the arch and accompanying rocky area one large freestaning piece and a set of smaller scatter pieces for each of the 4 main gods of chaos - with each piece centering around their respective mark.

So in all there will be 5 pieces one large, four small.

To get started, I traced the arch onto foam and cut it out. Also getting a start on 2 of the smaller pieces by drawing, tracing and cutting them out. I started with Khorne and Nurgle because those area really easy themes to represent, I'm having a little trouble coming up with ideas for the Tzeentch and Slaanesh pieces beyond color schemes, so let me know if any of you have any ideas!

For the Khorne piece, I decided to make some fire looking areas on the run itself, throw a few skulls here and there, and then carve some gashes in the base and paint them up to look like gaping, bloody wounds.

The Nurgle piece has a few bits I sculpted from sculpey, some little boils (every good Nurgle piece needs boils) and some snakes I made from those little toothpick spears and a candle. I think I'm going to fill the circles with goop. Goop makes everything better.

and the start of the others:

Cool stuff

Re Tzeentch - a giant tower, and some wrong things.
Like floating rocks. Trees with water/glass for leaves, water flowing up into nothing etc

Re Slaanesh - strip club?

I did plan long ago do try this as a piece of scenery

Starting with one of those cardboard masks, but the melts effect was always beyond me

Built the next two runes. For the Tzeentch one I made some water flowing upwards as recommended by someone. The best result I could get for the water was to mix some resin with too much catalyst then pour it immediately - it cures before it falls from the cup. But it gets REALLY hot due to the exothermic reaction of the resin and catalyst. Also added a lot of lightning-like cracks to the stone and some runes and crystals in the ground. Should be enough to give it some variety.

For the Slaanesh mark, I had some trouble finding something that was appropriate for most ages but still represented the theme well. I ended up making a ton of Sculpey tentacles and used a hot knife to make some gashes in the foam, then filled them with teeth. A few spikes here and there and some more tentacles and it looks good enough to pass!

Next step will be painting these then on to the big piece...
