So for a mage... are robes better than armor? I know some robes have buffs to help magic.. but with enchanting you can add your own buffs, plus you can find armor that's already got magicy buffs on em too. Or does wearing armor make your spells just not work as good? just wondering why I'd want to wear robes when you can wear normal armor and be able to take a couple of hits sometimes...

The robes usually have a good magicka regen and lower cost enchantment.
If you enchant your armour to do the same then that'll work as well.

Yeah I think my only worry is I'd prolly have to invest a lot of points in enchanting to be able to make really good magic armor. not sure if those points would be better spent elsewhere. Though right now the only skill I'm planning to fill up completely is Destruction.

Dude, if you want a alot of soul gems, go to blackreach. I got like 3 black soul gems there, and like 2 grand gems, a common gem and some other things.

What I have
~4100

Hey guys, I just picked this game up saturday and played for about 8 hours yesterday

Where do I get soul gems to recharge my magic weapons? I enchanted a weapon, used all the charges, charged it once to full strength, it ran out, charged it again, but that time it only had like 10 swings (used a lesser gem or something...?)

A) Soul Gems can be found scattered around the world
B) You can buy them from merchants
C) You can take an empty Soul Gem and a weapon of binding and trap a person or creature's soul inside it

You'll find soul gems in your travels or you can buy them from mage merchants like the mage in the Whiterun keep. On the PS3 you go to the weapon in your inventory and then hit R2 and it will let you pick a gem to recharge with. I found a weapon that had the soul trap enchant on it, so I disenchanted it and then added it to my bow, since I used that the most. Then every kill you get with the weapon drains the soul into one of your empty gems. After a while I had tons of gems taking up so much space, but I was able to keep all my weapons topped off all the time

Also, maybe its cause I play the sword n board tactic vs the 2 hander / spells route... but does anybody find their companion tends to do way more damage than your own character? (I gave her a two hander so go figure there lol ).

Mind you, if it wasn't for her tanking the frost troll on my way up those 7000 stairs, i likely wouldnt have made it haha

Soul gems are pretty easy to use and there is a perk for conjuration that causes bound weapons to soulcap for 5 seconds on EVERY hit, I have a crazy amount of souls...

Which is useful as I'm a heavy armour mage conjuration mage

Sounds like i need to level up conjuration

I'm already thinking of my next play through with a stealthish rogue character... forcing myself to keep pushing on since ive invested quite a bit of time on this one toon, I at least want to see the end of the game before starting a new guy lol

@Chowderhead: Heroic isn't just a matter of scale. As Avatar 720 pointed out, consider the cause of the crisis -- giving the writers credit, it was amoral curiosity. But I don't think the writers deserve much credit. Basically, it's another case of things keep happening to the Dovakhin. For some reason, you are special and the Psijic Order wants you to do things. So you do them. And you're not even bothered by the Thalmor agent being even remotely sympathetic or even getting you in on his plot. Tacking on "and you saved the universe" doesn't make it a good guy quest.

Again, it boils down to the out-of-game choice "play Skyrim or don't." It's a good example of what sebster was talking about.

At least you try to right your wrongs.

Just because you found it, it doesn't mean you were the guy who suggested that we bring it into the College. That was the Thalmor man.

So yes, I consider it wrighting a wrong.

Or just following orders. Again, it's "play it or don't" which is a choice I don't need a blockbuster sandbox to make.

The main difference is that you aren't doing it out of the goodness of your heart, you're doing it out of plain necessity. If you'd stumbled upon it at the college and offered to help out then it'd be a good guy quest, but since it's essentially stopping a disaster you started and therefore (at least in part) helped to bring about, it's not exactly driven by your quest to do good, it's driven by the fact that you fethed up and now you have to fix it.

The player started this?

That's like saying we should all lynch the inventor of Tazer guns for police brutality. All I did was find the damned thing! I didn't bring it to the mages college! I didn't try to exploit it!

So, what happens if you don't stop it? Like, will the college eventually implode and get sucked into a black hole and just cease to exist? or will the next step of the quest just be sitting there waiting for you to finish?

It would be fun if I could be walking through town one day and hear a Governator voice behind me be like "The college of winterhold just vanished, and no one knows why. Theres just a big crater now. I wonder if anyone got to the choppa in time."

It's explained when you take the amulet and the mage of the order appears to you, by taking the amulet, you set in motion something that cannot be stopped, so yes, it's your fault

Unfortunately it seems to require player interaction with the questline to forward it. You can wait for 1 hour or 1000 hours and it'll still be at the same point. My evil, insane Destronjuration mage was peeved that he couldn't simply off the Thalmor and then harness the eye himself.

Good point. The College quest is worse than most others because they don't even have an evil option, just do it or don't.

It's like a more canadian Ahnald.

Also, I can do impersonations of guards in my ahnald voice, if Dakka wants.

It's funny that he thought the court mage of Whiterun was a Dutch dude doing a Birtish accent. He sounds like an American dude doing a "Nord" impression to me.
