Subject: debunk 40k vehicle damage dice... I asked for a refund.

Yeah,
So I was on the phone with UK GW Direct Checking up on a order I made last week.
Then I asked is there some sort of refund policy with which I could return the Vehicle dice, "what's wrong with them?"
So i explain I bought 2 sets and I've had them less than 6 months and now they don't work in 5th edition.
that none of the dice match the new table.
So The dude said that it sucks that the dice don't work any more, and agreed that he thought I should have gotten more use out of them. but was sorry he couldn't help me, they don't do refunds on them.
two comments that he made that I didn't understand were:
"they still work in 4th edition"
"go to the store you bought them in and complain there"
I don't get it...
Why does GW want me to play 4th edition?
and if I take them back to a GW store will the GW Store manger there say different to the GW guy on the phone?
What do you guys think?
suck it up and bin them?
Panic.
edit: oh yeah they still sell them on the GW online Store.

They are no longer any good for rolling the damage chart, but they are still good for marking damage effects on vehicles, which is what i mostly use them for anyway.

Be thankful it was only a few dice.
If you have a Lost and the Damned, 13th company, Armored Company, Kroot Merc army, Chaos Dwarf army, Dogs of War army, can you ask GW to give you a refund since you can no longer play them in this edition?

You bought a gaming aid for a specific game: Warhammer 40,000 v4. You can still play this game, using that aid.
GM releases a new model year of their cars every year - just because I bought an '08 a month before the '09 line comes out doesn't entitle me to anything.

Well, it's technically true. There's nothing defective about the dice, you CAN continue to use them in the previous version, which they were designed for, for as long as you want. There really is nothing forcing you to play the new edition. I've got tons of old games ( GW or otherwise) that are nolonger supported, and they didn't stop working correctly when a new version or product came out.
Panic wrote:
"go to the store you bought them in and complain there"
Classic misdirection, unless he suggested that you might get a different answer at a different place, which makes sense.
Panic wrote:

Well, they still work, so nothing's really broken. When you get something new (like a new edition), you have to pay the costs to upgrade. If you don't like it, convince the other people to play 4th edition.
I've still got my old RT stuff I could still play with it, if I could find an opponent.

I gotta be honest, I'm really not sure what you expected from your phone call. You got the product you ordered, it worked as designed, you've been using them, and yet you ask a phone monkey for a refund six months after the fact?
GW's practices of misleading and occaisionally outright lying to customers is legendary (We'll only raise prices once a year, in July!), but obsolescence, even planned obsolescence, is never grounds for a refund after that length of time.
As for usability in 4th edition, i doubt "GW" wants you to still play 4th. He was saying they still work exactly as advertised: with the 4th edition rules. And it is possible that a local store might be able to do a trade in, particularly if they can somehow ship it back. For example, a savvy manager would swap two dice in the tins, making each one "defective." Now you can return one of them and hopefully get something else in exchange. there is a possibility of satisfaction, IOW.
Finally, if you don't need to use them as markers, then sell them, give them away, bin them, whatever. They were a silly luxury to begin with anyway.

Well, there was certianly no confirmation beyond the leaked pdf back then, and GW has an official "Deny we're working on anything until a month before it drops" policy which makes his case a bit more sympathetic. I don't want to put words in the mouth of the OP, but I'm imagining he's more annoyed that GW would market (and continue to sell) a product that they knew wouldn't be usable in a few months then he is at the loss of his 20 bucks (or however many farthings that is in real money).

Um, did GM enact a new law that makes your 08 model illegal and unuseable? I fail to see how that example relates to this.

GW didn't do anything that made the dice illegal and unusable, either. They are not compatible with a new version of the game; the game with which they ARE still compatible did not spontaneously cease to exist.
(I've got a few 2nd ed D&D books, too, including the Priest's Spell Compedium, which didn't finish releasing until AFTER 3rd ed launched.)

yeah,
polonius that's pretty much it, I actually really liked the dice while they worked.
They were not labled as 4th ed dice.
Blackmoor I know Its just dice and that i'm lucky, they have messed with my armies in the past, I have a a LATD army in a box that never got off the ground when it's coex was phased out... I accept things fade out but these are about a year old arn't they... that's a pretty short life.
Like i said i'll suck it up...
I'll support GW.
I play their games and I like their products?
Just sometimes I feel like GW could do better with supporting it customers? "hey sorry they are debunk, we'll make you feel better about that and trade you for some plain new dice?"
PaniC...
edit:
<devils advocate>
If I wanted to be a jerk I could go to a Tournament and while You use the new 40k Pentrating Table, I'll use my 40k Pentrating Dice? and my glancing dice when I glance? is that ok with you? I just bought them online. nothing offical says they are outta date...

Built-in obsolescence is a feature of GW games you just have to accept.
If you can't use the dice for something else, bin them and suck it up.
Make a note never to buy any specialist GW dice. They've probably got a target of scatter dice to sell and will change it to a D8 once that's done.

Sucks to have that happen, but GW is known for this.
Ask the guy that bought 40K 3d edition the month after they got the box of Necromunda or the free GorkaMorka game.
Sustained fire dice were great. Now they can line the bottom of the cat box and not even be missed. Try it with those Vehicle dice, Im sure they are great for soaking up
