Guys, I got my latest issue of White Dwarf today, and what do I see on page 37. A nice Ultra Marine spread with a Thunderhawk Gunship. Could this be the first pics of the new plastic kit????? Here are some pics of the Forgeworld version, and the one in White Dwarf. I've spent the last hour looking at the pics, and I'm finding little details that are not on the WD version. What do you guys think???

That's the same Thunderhawk from Reload, which was proven to be the Forge World version.

Hoping I'm not stepping on anyones toes, but the only T-Bird that's worth a gak is the one you make yourself. Forgeworld makes some incredible models, but I find them a smidge overpriced.

I think I'm either cross-eyed or you're seeing details that aren't there. To me they match one for one in every way.

Both are FW models, the WD model is most likely converted in ever so slight ways.

Well, they are obviously NOT identical in every way (I'll elaborate), however, this is not meant to say that they are NOT both FW models.

The cannon mounted to the top (sorry... dunno what they call it) is different. A quick look at the ends of the barrels will show that.
Does the FW version come with options for that?
Of course there MAY be other differences. that is just something I noticed off the bat.

the engine housins ar different as well

although that migh tbe hte angle of the picture

The Imperium of Man is able to traverse the Warp with difficulty when their Emperor concentrates from his golden life support machine and lights the way. Unfortunately, because the Emperor has the attention span of the average 5-year-old Pokemon fanboy, this means that many an unfortunate Imperial ship has had the WTF WHERE'D THE LIGHTS GO experience, which in the Warp is invariably fatal.

Space Wolves one has an eagle on the front too.

They look too similar to me, I can't see any significant differences, can you point out these differences? A plastic kit will probably differ enough to be instantly recognisable, like the Tau two seater craft.

The two Ultramarine ones look to match. The Space Wolf one features a Leman Russ cannon head on it's main armament, most likely an easy swap. I wouldn't worry too much about comparing the SW ones, as I would the two UM's.

It is actually one of the old metal ones from back in the day. They had 3 painted up in Ultra colors and that looks like one of them.

None of them are the metal ones, the cockpit was solid with no clear windows and it was quite different in other ways.

Here's the only pic I can find...

SW one has the aquila on the front and a skull mounted between the cockpit windows.

The cannons are different.

One of the Ultramarine TH has the yellow and black warning stripes painted on the engine and the aquila painted under the cannon.

I built 2 of the forgeworld ones, and they come with different cannons, both of the ones shown, a turbo lasers and a battlecannon I believe. FYI.

Wow, I thought this was quite the rumor, but after looking at the pics its the FW one in both cases I think.

I'd say that this thread got me excited and then quickly let me down, but was I really going to pay $150 to $200 for a plastic Thunderhawk that I wouldn't really ever use?

Probably not!

The Thunderhawk has a Thunderhawk Battle Cannon(shown on the Wolf) and a Turbolaser(shown on both UM Hawks).

It's the angle and it being airbrushed the same blue as the rest of the bird.

doesn't look much at all like the metal one, way too big (I like my junior thunderhawk in training, but I want a resin one to replace the beast)

Keith, I was hoping you would have good news for us and tell us that there is a product code for it already. LOL

Anyway guys, I was just putting it out there for others to look at. I do find something very strang with the pic in WD. Why would the pro GW paint team not paint the inside of the cockpit. Why would they short change a $700+ model by blacking out the windows. Those guys that paint there are amazing in every way. I just can't imagine the project manager saying, "hey guys, just got this new thunderhawk in. Lets build it, paint it, but don't do anything with the main focal point. Just black it out and it will look fine."

I don't know about you guys, but I just don't see that happening. I do see them not having a detailed cockpit for a plastic one since it would be difficult to include plastic windows. Also, doing the plastic interior would be additional sculpting work and additional spruce and plastic. A large cockpit like that along with windows would add 5% to the raw cost of the model for GW. That's just my opinion, and I'm totally guessing on pricing here, but its just odd.

That's just my two cents, so don't start killiing the messanger.

We're not, but from what you can tell from Reload, the cockpit isn't blacked out(there's no panes in those windows, anyway). The angle of the picture makes it impossible to get a shot of the interior from that distance, especially with the cameras and printers GW uses for WD. As for not having a detailed interior, the Eldar set the precedent of them being able to do it. Also if other companies can(especially on large kits), why can't GW?

IMO, they're the same. The key is looking at the "hard" stuff: hull proportions, hull details, etc.

The presence of an antenna, barrel swap, FW Rhino doors, and stick-on skull are meaningless.

Oh well, guess I was wrong. It looked like the metal one to me, as it seemed stubbier than the FW one.

It is definitely not a plastic one though. So it must be the FW one!

The metal one look snothing like these ones.

I have a Resin one and my buddy has the old metal one and next to each other they look so different its not even funny...actually it is kinda funny

But the ones in the pics are all FW models, hate to break it to you.

I know the T-Hawlk rumours seem amazing but think about if GW would ever make it? It owuldn't be a smart business option for them. Only Marines can use them so thus the eliminate a lot of potential buyers.

The only reason they made the Baneblade in plastic was that Marines, Imperial Guard, Chaos and Orks can make use of it.

Plastic T-Hawk doesn't make financial sense. And that's why GW isn't going to make one.

OT, but how were the metal ones released? I've seen a few fleeting pictures of them, and only ever heard them discussed in hushed tones... were they some impossible limited edition, or what?

IIRC, the metal ones were released as a limited run, packaged in a wooden box (the sheer amount of metal would have torn through any other packaging).

The most evil part about the metal 'hawk is that it was created by a GW sculptor working with 28mm minis worth of materials. So every part is like 2" square.

Eventually, GW found out and made it into an actual kit.

GW had a really funny release about it, how it was for expert assemblers and stuff. As it predated Forgeworld, the price tag was simply unbelieveable at the time.

Personally, I cannot even imagine assembling such thing.

Matt_Varnish on this board has one...ask him about the nightmares of assmbling one as he had no instructions, lol

And the metal Thunderhawks were also given 'free' to anyone who bought the Space Marine Chapter Boxed set froma few years back in White Dwarf.

The price was something like $6000 or $7000 CDN for a full chapter plus vehicles, special characters etc...

Not really.

Guard can use Baneblades. Marines can use them if they have Guard allies in Apoc (there are no Marine Banerblades). Chaos Baneblades, again, in Apoc or in Traitor Guard, but then you're still playing Guard, just Guard w/Spikes. Orks use big tanks based on the Baneblade. Essentially GW invented a bunch of reasons why other races could use it so they could sell it to more than one type of player.

Joyous_Oblivion wrote:Plastic T-Hawk doesn't make financial sense. And that's why GW isn't going to make one.

Most people play Marines. It makes more financial sense than a Stompa and the Baneblade.

Except that it would be way more expensive than those, because it's huge. A fair few people can still afford baneblades at $110, but a thunderhawk would be too much, IMHO.
