Well, this has not been an especially brilliant past few days. Started off losing my Mobile Phone (not too bad. Is an older model and a bit knackered) and continued by losing my job.

Now, it's not all bad as I might just have gained myself a girlfriend from all this (kind of related to the loss of phone, not related to loss of job). Plus, and to me this is a big plus, in a time of Recession, there is one job I am quite hopeful of getting, and thats as the new Full Timer at my local store. I'm a regular customer, I know the Manager and we get on, same with the Part Timer. Add in my previous experience working for the company, my increased competency in painting skills and, even if I do say so myself, a very good knowledge of the games etc, I am fairly confident I'll be at least a competing candidate for said position.

Only downside here of course, is that I'll be looking at an involuntary paycut as GW don't exactly pay the highest wages in town. But hey, it's a job, one I know I will enjoy, one I know I can do and do well, and also a position which seems relatively stable, given the financial climate we are now in.

The other option, and the ideal one for me, is to apply to my local Theatre, who are seeking an Office Administrator. I like a busy job, and the money seems good, and I just hope my less than cleansheet CV wise (yup...I got fired....for using the Internet) won't hinder me.

So, anyone currently working for GW or did so recently? I was a Keytimer about 4 or so years ago and loved it, though I am expecting the Full Time position to not be quite so enjoyable....

It depends really on how much you enjoy your own hobby/get the time to do it regurly, i've never worked for GW (they said that my fringe was not suitable when i went to recruitment day (yes i was foolish enough i have one of those silly fringes a few years ago) however I am friends with so many people that work for GW especially the full timers say that it tends to kill off their hobby for a while with all the painting they have to do on a regular basis that when they get home they can't bear to look at their own models, hope this helps as its something to bear in mind.

When you give total control to a computer, it’s only a matter of time before it pulls a Skynet on you and you’re running for your life.

I would say don't turn your hobby into your job. For then your hobby starts to feel like a job. Personally I would suggest trying for the Office Admin position. It pays more and it seems that you would actually enjoy that position more than a GW position. In addition the extra money gives you more for models and your new girlfriend (trust me, girlfriends will be a large cut of your check each month).

Btw, what sort of job fires you for using internet...I'm at work at this very moment and no one here seems to have an issue.

This.

I used to manage a video game store and after awhile you really just don't want to hear about video games anymore after awhile. If it is a temporary position while you look for something else it probably won't be that bad but in the long run in can effect your love of the hobby. Of course ymmv and everyone is different.

I also think in the economic condition that more money is better, espically with a new girlfriend.

kinda couldn't help noticing how mad doc grotsnik is enjoying talking about himself in most of his recent posts I've seen ...anyway, in response to Axyl. I do my hobby for a living (not wargaming I add) and do find that your attention can wan at times and you find yourself not so into it but the enthusiasm does come back at times, but saying that the few former gw staffers I know aren't into the hobby anymore don't know what that says about working there. But in a recession no one (aswell as beggars) can be choosers i guess.

I have a nasty habit of inadverantly blogging my escapades. Just be thankful I don't refer to myself in the 3rd person, a practice I find most detestable and egocentric!

I think I will apply to both jobs. GW might not be ideal of course, but it's a good fall back and a fairly secure job, whereas getting appointed to the Theatre is going to be highly competitive. I'd imagine.

I thought you were working at the nuclear power plant or something. I would have thought that was pretty secure. Anyway...

Apply to all the jobs you can. It's a numbers game.

If you haven't done an interview for a long time you need practice.

Once you've got a job, start applying for better ones. It's much easier to get a job if you already have one.

Your logic is a star in the darkness. if MDG actually has two potentials put in for both. If offered both pick the one with the Company/branch that is doing the best, and secondarily offering the better opportunity.

Somewhere in south-central England.

At any interviews you get, if they ask you why you last the last job, you need to have a good answer worked out.

Lots of companies don't provide references, though there are ways that managers can get coded references over in the subtext.

You might be best advised to come clean about the internet business and say you've learned your lesson.

Indeed on both counts!

Though I can always put it down to Redundancy.

Things I have going in favour for the Office job is a wealth of experience, a sharp mind, a will to succeed (I was VERY good at my previous job, third best team in the area, when I was on my own and all others had teams of three) AND I am available to start immediately. When it comes to salary negotiation, they are offering £17-£20k, and I would be more than happy with the lower value.... Plus I am a genuinely nice guy who finds it incredibly easy to get on with people!
