Subject: Soul Grinder proxy for Defiler - legit?

Hey guys,
Im building a Nurgle CSM army - I like the Soul Grinder model way more than the Defiler model. Is it a legit substitute model to use, do you think? Especially if I plan to take extra CC arms in place of guns?

I'm on the bandwagon for needing to model a battle cannon on the thing somehow. Maybe carving or modeling a big opening in the belly and have the barrel coming out with some intestines wrapped around it?

Soul Grinders have a Mawcannon attack which comes from their mouth. You could assume that it does the same as a Battle Cannon I also agree that Defilers look dumb where Soul Grinders look awesome.

Well, the Soul Grinder looks much better than a Defiler.
I see no reason not to proxy the Defiler by a Soul Grinder.

Outside of friendly games, I wouldn't be keen on just the standard Soul Grinder model counting as a Defiler - but it would be fine with some modifications to make it more Grinderish
A Soul Grinder carrying a battle cannon like the WHFB Ogres carry their cannons - that could look like quite cool...

Completely Legit. The soulgrinder is armed with a weapon identical in statline to the defiler, and even has an obvious place for it to fire from. It can also easily represent extra close combat weapons and an autocannon or heavy flamer.
A great way to spice up an army with "not another defiler" and also a nice addition to an apocalypse force, as it can be the lead vehicle amongst other defilers.

Exactly. Also, since demon armies can't have defilers and Chaos marine armies can't have soul grinders, I think it should be plainly obvious when you plop it down with your nurgle CSM army that its a defiler.

Cool, I appreciate the input and will likely use one. I think since it's only using the Battle Cannon and close combat weapons (meaning, there's no confusion as to whether he has a Reaper Autocannon or flamer) it should be all good.

Yep, put some care into modeling it and any opponent that's worth playing will allow it. As an extra bonus, anyone who balks at such a close sub-in has revealed themself to be a tool before a single die is rolled. It's like a jerk detector!

Which is why I feel that only a complete anal fool would have any trouble with you using a soulgrinder as a defiler even in a tourny situation.
You see, WYSIWYG and the rules on proxies are in place (aside from the obvious intention by GW to sell more models) as a safeguard against bad feelings caused by confusion over what a model is. As it's glaringly obvious what the model is and since there are no other options in that army that come even close to being an acceptable stand-in for a soulgrinder, it's pretty cut and dried.
This proxy is a long, long way from the "all these heavy bolters are lascannons" sort of thing that people generally frown upon.

I'd totally allow it, of course i'm biased and think it looks just awesome! If i ever pick up CSM's again i'll be fielding them as Defilers.

Time to go get a Soul Grinder for my CSM. Love that model and am planning to move into Nurgle Daemons once I get some more lesser daemons.
