So, as the title says, what armies/ units in armies do you think are the most unused in the 40k world. This could include units in popular armies that also never see the light of day, like ork tankbustas or burna boys, eldar dark reapers(which i dont understand cause they are awesome), space marine shooty termies, etc.

Armies I play:
-5000 pts
-2500 pts
Mechanicus -1850 pts

Chaos termies with a Reaper Autocannon (with good reason, but still).

Here's two: Chaos furies and chaos spawn.

Shame about the termies with reaper autocannons, too. If only they were worth it.

Most Unused armies: Dark Eldar, Necrons, Black Templar, Space Wolves (not nearly as much as they were a few years ago I noticed).

I agree with the termie reaper auto cannons, tank bustas and burnas (personally i use these especially in apoc games as the burnas are excelent against horde and then you get powa weapons in cc, and tank bustas, despite tank hunting (which i don't have as much of a problem with b/c I run them until their close enough to the target I want.

I think sm bikes and speeders are pretty unused, as well as vespids (with good reason, at least they look cool), hellhounds (with the upcoming varients this is sure to change), flash gits (love the lore but theres good reaso why they'r enot used).

Witch Hunters are pretty rare too, which I don't see why because they can be cheap as hell and a royal pain in the ass.

My Armies: 2000 pts Vior La Tau
5500 pts Armagedon Deathskull Orks
3000pts Raven Guard with Grey Knight contingent
1000 pts Tyranids (Kraken or Swamp Paint Scheme, don't know yet).
4000pts Word Bearers, Company of Shadow, and Libation Bearers.
2000pts Chaos Daemons.

Necrons have a fair few fans but they play them less these days unless its the only army they have. Ditto wolves. DE have always been pretty rare and BT I dunno. I used to see a lot of them but I don't now and i have no idea why.

Wtichhunters are an excellent army that do really well under the current rules. The main reason you don't see many armies is that because almost all the models are metal it is the most expensive army to field. Also a lot of younger players don't want to play the "girl" army.

I disagree on speeders and hellhounds. Both are massively popular choices, particularly in the last edition. I saw Marine armies that consisted of little but land speeders and it was rare indeed to see an IG list without the obligatory hellhound.

I dunno about rarest in the game but i can probably take a stab per army

Marines - up until recently scout bikers. Now probably techmarines, land speeder storms and vanguard vets (although these are popular with timmies)

Witchunters - sisters repentia. Crap, crap, crap, crap, crappity crap that are impossible to use effectively and force you to take a crappy priest at the same time.

Daemonhunters - Daemonhosts, impossible to use effectively and prevent you from using Grey Knights.

Space Wolves - Long Fangs or blood claw jump packs, nobody uses these because they are waaaaay too expensive for what they do.

Blood Angels - probably that special character, the dead one. Tycho is it? The special character with absolutely zero to reccomend him.

Dark Angels - erm, nothing really. Everything in that codex does see use. Maybe scouts?

Tau - undoubtedly vespids and then the krootox. I know a lot of people that would like to use a krootox but giving up infiltrate is too big a deal. And vespids are badly designed.

Orks - Flash gitz. Burnas and tankbustaz are unpopular but they do see use. Burnaz can be quite fun even if they aren't massively competitive and their great to support a dreadbash. In contrast people only field Flashgitz for bragging rights and if they do they need to design pretty much the whole army around them.

Eldar - storm guardians, support weapon batteries, wraithguard and swooping hawks are all pretty unpopualr but they all still see use. The nature of the list allows for some really niche army builds that can still work.

Dark Eldar - I haven't seen anyone use a hellion since 3rd ed. Grotesques are very unpopular too.

Tyranids - biovores are gaked by 5th ed rules. Nobody seems to use gargoyles either because the models are too expensive.

Daemons - furies are crap. Orher than that pretty much everything sees use. Screamers aren't too popular either.

Chaos Space Marines - chaos spawn. Nobody likes them and their nigh on impossible to use. Regular chaos space marines are quite rarely seen too.

Imperial Guard - Engineseers, sanctioned psykers and priests. Engineseers are great models but do very little in game terms, ditto sanctioned psykers, and priests actually comprise a negative for units their used in.

Necrons - either tomb spiders or pariahs. Its funny how the two units which don't have the necron rule don't see much use isn't it.

All over the U.S.

Eldar-Heavy support batteries

Necrons- Pariahs

Witch Hunters- Sisters repentia

Deamon hunters- Deamonhost? Don't really know seeing as they are so rare. Maybe should say the whole army.

Orks- Anything thats not a nobbiker, a bikerboss or biker painboy

BA- their Codex

DE- same as above

IG- Ogryns, rough riders, and storms for right now but things could change.

SM-Allies...seriously Jump packers are getting used a lot less since the drop pods release.

Tyranid- Agree with razerous on this one but will add Gargoyles(At least in our areas)

Tau-KrootOx, Sniper Drones, Vespids, and SkyRays(Its the whole having to roll to hit twice for a single shot that still gives up cover saves that kills it)

And Squats Evil laughter ensues echoing into the the distance.

No lictors? Really? Every nid player I know has one.

Skyrays aren't too uncommon either. People usually just pop-off the missles turn 1 or 2 so people think it is spent and then use it as a mobile markerlight platform. It isn't as good as 2 hammerheads and a Broadside as a HS load out but you'll still see it a damn site more often than krootox's or vespids.

The SkyRays were much more prevalent in 4th ed in the areas I play. The only time I see them now is in a farsight list. But YMMV, was just expessing my personal opinion as asked by the OP.

For Space Marines, that must be Techmarine and Land Speeder Storm. And of course the famous Legion of Damned. The only things I like in Techmarine are his Bolster Defense (2+ Cover Scouts For The Win!) and conversion beamer. I still use him only if I have some points spare.

For Orks, it must obviously be Flash Gitz and Tankbustas

For Necrons it is Pariahs cause you have to pay a lot to get your hands on even one of them.

Well, the way I find lictors most useful is by having them in the army and not actually trying to do anything with them. Use their +1 to reserve rolls to get your outflanking stealers in easier. Then let the lictor stand in your battleline, but not in close combat, to give Feeder Tendril reroll to hit to your melee fighters. I think those two effects are well worth 80p as long as I don't get it killed by assaulting with it...

And I'd add to the list:
Tyranid - Spore mine cluster (taken as FA-choices)

Washington DC metro area.

Whole problem with lictors is the "must deploy in terrain" (Second sentence of secret deployment rule) part of their deep strike - leaving them with a fair chance of losing half their wounds before they act. Add their fairly miserable melee ability and their points cost I'd rather have another 16 gaunts with spinefists and hope for good reserves rolls.

Definitely Rough Riders, Ripper Swarms, Mandrakes, DE Scourges...DE in general, Vespids, Tau Honor Blades, Sisters Repentia (much more interesting now they can run, plus Holy rage for 6+up to 2d6)

Hmmm maybe I should rethink my 6 Haemonculi dark eldar army that I'm building. Here are the units I've never fielded or never seen fielded:

Eldar: Heavy support platforms

Chaos: Spawn

Tau: Vespid (though the space pope is very rare)

Deamonhunters: Daemonhosts (though if you gave them eternal warrior at 3 wounds I'd field them a TON)

Space Marines: Servitors (I actually field a tech marine every now & then as well as a scout loaded Land speeder storm). I also will not field a whirlwind now as I think the thunderfire is a better option.

Necrons: Never faced a scrab swarm

Orks: Never faced flash gitz

Nids: Never faced Gargoyles

Salamander Marines 65-12-13
Dark Eldar Wych Cult 4-1-0
Dark Eldar Kabal 36-10-4
