Soooo.....Anyone actually play Pokemon on DakkaDakka?

Sorry for the lack of info in the post, these threads generate their own topics and discussions.

Gold and Silver were the last pokemon games that I can still respect for their story. After that it's just been more of the same, plus daft amounts of legendary pokemon.

Now, I'm sure ruby/sapphire and diamond/pearl weren't bad games. Adding gameplay features and improving graphics didn't hurt them. I just very much dislike the "Here's a new country with no connection to the old one, here's 100+ new pokemon, here's some gym leaders, here's an Evil Organisation™, oh and here's a professor and some starter pokemon" mentality.

I think that pokemon was a victim of it's own success, really. It turned into such a cash cow they couldn't help but milk it. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, mind you, but when it comes at the expense of previous games' story, character and consistancy, I can't agree with it.

Gold and silver's story worked because it respected red and blue. It wasn't "in another land, at an indeterminate point in time", it was linked throughout to the previous game. Obviously, they look a bit dated these days, but then that's what re-releases are for; Fire Red/Leaf Green were awesome, and not just for the nostalgia value.

Nostalgia value though, to return to a point, is why I dislike the newer additions to the series. They're self-contained. Okay, I accept they couldn't just repeat what they did with gold/silver, and maybe because I haven't played through ruby/sapphire recently or with sufficient attention I'm mis-remembering it. But that's impression I'm left with - same game, different dressing, with no respect for history.

I could really have just linked to this comic and saved you all a long read. Oh well.

I played the original Red game for months. At some point I was at 149 (!) Pokemon and the last one I missed was the 2 dragon Pokemon, Dragini or something.
When I was on vacation in Switzerland with my parents, a guy I met there asked me if he could try it out, I said yes but explitly told him not to save the game.
....
He started a new game and saved....gone was all the work...to a child at that age who's into videogames as much as I was this was truly devastating.

Still, I kinda got back into Pokemon with Gold and played that for a bit, but I already thought back then, that some of those Pokemon were just plain stupid.

I recently tried out one of the Advance and then a DS game but I tired of it quickly. One would think, that with a system like the DS, you could get more interesting fight scenes, but it was still the same waggling around.

Recently I saw another episode of the anime again, which also greatly suffered from the "what the is that supposed to be"-syndrome.

Edit: Just for the heck of it. Let's see how Pokemon "evolved" (pun intended) over the last few years.
First: some of the classic Pokemons from Red and Blue. We have the rock dude, the electric rat, a cool dragon thing, some sort of fire lion/dog, a phoenix-like creature, seems good enough.

I couldn't find any pics from gold. What were the starter Pokemon back then?

And from there it just got worse:

Is that a purple monkey with a hand on it's tail? And what's up with that tree? I know there are plant Pokemon, but that's just plain lazy.

If Pokemon start to look like something from "generic anime made only for selling a card game" things got bad....

Under the Himalaiyan mountains

I played yellow, red, and crystal. Once the pokemon got stupid looking, i quit playing.

"I.. I know my time has come" Tethesis said with a gasp, a torrent of blood flowing from his lips.
"No! Hang on brother!!" Altharius could feel the warmth slip away from his dear sibling's hands

Tethesis's reached out his bloodied arm to Altharius's face.
"I..I have one final request"
Altharius leaned close to listen, tears welling in his once bright eyes.
"make sure th..they put my soulstone in a tank... it'll be... real fethin' cool"
"Yes, you're gonna be the most fethin' cool tank!!" burning hot tears streaked down Altharius's face, as he held his brother's soul in his grasp.

I finished platinum the day after it came out. I EV trained a team of 6 to go through the game with and stomped everything. It was glorious. Platinum is amazing.

I played RBY voraciously and was 64 games undefeated in the original Pokemon CCG league when it shut down. I didn't play GSC, but have been on board since RSE and DPP. I think the Pokes made for GSC tried too hard to be lifelike and hence we ended up with crap like Stantler. I kinda despise Shinx (Neopet, anyone?) and Bidoof (slowed beaver?), but the DPP gen has some ok ones, mainly the evolutions of the older ones. The RSE ones I really enjoyed. I love all the new connectivity and Battle Frontier features (finally cooperative Battle Tower! Took em long enough).

I've played through most of them.I don't really Like them anymore. The first generation in the Kanto region was pretty fun. The Johto (is that how you spell it) legue games were also pretty good. At the Saphire/Ruby/Emerald games the pokemon started getting weird but it was tolerable. After that it pretty much got old and looked like the creators were running out of ideas.

Anybody ever get a mew? I think it's pretty funny that all the times I was told of crazy glitches or tricks to get it as a kid, nobody ever told me the glitch that works.

Which is just as well really, 'cause that thing is a powerhouse.

I played yellow and silver and enjoyed them. saphire had potential but didn't make the most of the new changes.

an mmo version on pc could actually be the way to change the formula and regain a lot of lost fans. i find that people who played pokemon because the games were good at the beginning as opposed to the fact that it was a craze still play the games and enjoy it.

haven't tried the ds versions. one improvement (they might have put it on the DS versions) would be to allow multiple profiles.

When they changed the pokemon around at saphire it was a lot harder to follow. silver just advanced the initial games so it could be followed. what happened IMO was that the craze ended and suddenely there wasn't the host of background material EVERYWHERE so those that pleyed the games suddenely didn't have things to reference to, and friends to battle/trade with became thin on the ground.

No multiple profiles as far as I know. Which seems like a criminal oversight to me.

It's hard to add anything new, but I think The Deadnote is spot on!

The Dreadnote wrote:Gold and Silver were the last pokemon games that I can still respect for their story. After that it's just been more of the same, plus daft amounts of legendary pokemon.
Oh gawd, yes. They're only legendary because everyone has one. I usually avoided them like the plague, only caught them for novelty's sake so I could check out their pokedex articles. And after those 3 dogs and their clones that could strike anywhere I really couldn't give a feth to look for them.

The Dreadnote wrote:Now, I'm sure ruby/sapphire and diamond/pearl weren't bad games. Adding gameplay features and improving graphics didn't hurt them. Lets not forget to COMPLETELY disregard our old time fans by teaching us how to play in about 3 pages worth of unskipable (is that even a word?) dialogue and by blatently adding fething Geodudes and Zubats in all the caves. And we already have a Pidgy trio. The Swellow trio was pushing it. But WHY the Starly trio?! WHY?!

It seriously needs a new jumpstart. Less beauty pagents, less mining, less GIMMICKS. More story and gameplay.

I feel like an idiot for still playing the games. Each time I feel older, not in a good way. Pokemon should have matured more with its fans, let the players make moral choices rather than just agree with everything the NPCs demand of them. Let the player feel like they're making an impact on the world, rather then guiding them on a Geodude-riddled rail. There are 500+ Pokemon now, let the player have access to ALL of them.

Is everyone else blind to the fact that the Gold Silver Crystal era Pokemon were the worst looking ones? GSC gave us Hoothoot, Quagsire, Stantler, Snubbull, and the legendary... dogs? "Feraligator?" Everything else has been an awesome addition since then.

To be honest, I really don't remember that much from Gold and Silver. The original red version was almost burned into my brain, I knew all the names and some numbers, but I can't remember any interesting creature from Gold.

Feraligator was the gak. Totodile made me smile every step of the way, but then he gets badass at the end. Sure, Nosepass is stupid, Quagsire I still don't know what it is and Snubull was cute. But did you guys see the latest additions?! ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES?! Are you gaking me?!

I'll let it slide this time because you agreed with me so heartily

Also, regarding G/S/C pokemon design: yeah, I'll give you that, though stupid looking pokemon is hardly confined to those games.

Does anyone remember what the big green dragon-snake thing in R/S/E was called? That thing looked awesome.

I had an action replay for the N64 with pokemon coliseum, which had a code that turned every wild pokemon into a mew. I became a mew factory, shipping them out to everyone who wanted one, and I had a team of mews. Got boring very quickly though
