I'd translate it as "Nothing exceptionally bad or good happened today". Which means that after 1/3 of the year, GW are pretty much on target to hit their profit forecast for the year. Which is good news for the shareholders. And everyone else who wants GW to stay in business. But bad news for anyone who wanted to see GW take a bloody nose over price hikes.

Fairly impressive really given the state of the world economy actually. Not many companies running close to the plan.
Mind you, all depends on how high they set their bar!

What most people fail to realize is that the entire world economy is tanking... which means a whole lot of not much. World currencies are all comparative, so if everybody's doing poorly, then nobody's really taking much of a hit.

Tell that to my Uncle who worked for Gotchalks Corporate for the past 30 years and is watching it all fall apart.
Or to all the retireees in the States that have seen their life savings evaporate out of their 401K's. Lifetimes of savings, gone.
It may not be hitting you or other young(ish) people so hard, but it has devastated a lot of people.

The media likes to use gloom-and-doom to boost ratings/readership/etc., there's no doubt.
However, 10% unemployment, sluggish credit markets, plummeting home prices, 401Ks down 50%, etc., are all nothing to sneeze at. It's certainly the worst U.S. economy in decades.

Well thats just frightfully incorrect given that currencies are measured by their real ability to be traded for goods and services. If everyones currency is down then everything is more expensive for everyone. People don't just start having more money to compensate.

Possibly the worst in 2 decades, but not if you include the '70's. At least in the US; many other countries are doing a lot worse.
However, it is looking to be picking back up of late, with a lot of industrial sales improving (at least in chemicals) so unless things get too crazy with overreactions, we should pull out perhaps by year's end pretty well.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Thirty years is three decades. Also note that there was ( IIRC) only two years of actual bear markets that decade ('73-'74?). The stock market <> the overall economy, but it's important to note that not everything was completely in the tank for the entire decade, although certainly times weren't good.
I think you're being overly optimistic about a recovery by the end of the year. We might not technically be in a recession anymore by year's end. But there are still some fundamental problems with the economy, and the high unemployment rate will almost certainly continue to be a drag. The job market will take years to recover. Jobs are always the last thing to recover.

Over here in Cali, we hit a new record high of over 11%.
That's some serious recession unemployment, and people are still being laid off.

And I thought 2.5 months sucked!
Bloody hell Moopy. Best of luck finding fresh employment! I for one *hate* being unemployed. Not so much the lack of cash, more from a self respect thing. That first pint of the weekend taste so much better after 5 days hard toil. Quite aside from the monetary side of things, it's earnt in blood sweat and tears!
I'll be getting £128 a fortnight Jobseekers Allowance (form of social security) starting next week. Better than a kick up the arse, but man...I want a job!

Board games usually do well in a recessionary economy. There might be something similar going for GW games; a relatively cheaper form of entertainment compared to stuff like gun collecting, foreign travel, and getting laid.

Have you priced Games Workshop stuff lately?!?
I guess there's some truth, and the expenses of wargaming can be 'bit sized'. A good gaming PC is a big up-front cost, but I find a lot of people justify it as it's also a tool for job searches (and if you're lucky, I believe it can be partially deductible). It does sound like a good time for GW or other companies to try to get some people interested... But I wonder if it would be the smaller games that would do that, like Necromunda or Space Hulk, instead of the larger games.

Thank you John I was getting a little ticked. I've been laid off since December and my wife is down to 4 days a week and there is talk of deeper cuts. We're looking at bankruptcy and my marriage is on the rocks because there is nothing here. No job to get. Not as bad. I only know one guy with a job. Out off all the people I know.
Sorry man. But you have no clue what your talking about.
