Here is my current Ork flesh... I've read some articles, other websites(shh, don't tell) and I'm not happy with what I've tried yet. I'm not happy with my current Ork flesh and I'm in the market for ideas and techniques. Hijacking another thread I received these (whether intentionally meant for me or not) thus far... Mad Doc Grotsnik: My method is undercoat black, then a layer of Orkhide Shade. Then wet/drybrush a bit of Knarloc Green for the first highlight, followed by a light drybrushing of Goblin Green over the muscles. This done and dry, layer (maybe two to taste) of Devlan, which as mentioned in my earlier post binds the three layers of green together, giving a pretty natural gradient, topped off with a layer (or two again) of Thraka Green to tone down the brown of Devlan and bring out the various shades of green more. This produces a decent colour for basic Boyz skin, and varying the initial three layers of paint should allow the same method to do Black Orcs, Nobz and Warboss' should you wish so. Cyporiean: Tutorial at http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/How_to_Paint_a_Savage_Orc Cryonicleech: I must grab some of this Devlan Miracle. Perhaps if I drink it I will become a master painter! (This one is suspect ) Waaagh_Gonads: (with photo)For my goblins I use knarloc green, goblin green, devlan mud over whole model, rehighlight goblin green. Orcs are knarloc green, devlan mud whole model, knarloc green highlights. malfred: I use Vallejo Sepia, Brown and Smoke. (These I actually own!) Brother SRM: (With photo)All the highlights and shading on those models are washes. The skin is Goblin Green with a Thrakka Green wash, the body is Bubonic Brown, pants are Bleached Bone, Scorched Brown for the shoes, Codex Grey for the metal, and the straps are all left white. Devlan Mud wash over that does all the highlighting and shading I need, and then some. Makes for some nice tabletop quality models. Thanks everyone for the ideas so far. The intent is to find something good, fast and that I liek for my Ork army. I'll be trying these out in the month of July. Any other techniques you'd like to share are greatly appreciated! Photos are even better!

My Ork Skin method for the Lazy Painter:
1) Prime black. Krylon black primer is my go-to spray for most jobs.
2) Knarloc green coat. You can thin the Knarloc green out just a tiny bit with some water and get some really nice coverage. Since it's a foundation paint, even thinned Knarloc green goes over black very well.
3) A coat of Goblin Green. I use Vallejo Game Colors primarily, but they also call the paint 'Goblin Green' - it is the same shade as GW's, or near enough that the eye can't tell. Vallejo paints usually don't need much thinning, but I do tend to get a bit on the brush and just tap the surface of the water in my painting cup to get it flowing better so I don't leave any brush stroke marks while base coating.
Now the fun begins. Your whole ork skin area should be a nice, bright, smooth goblin green. If your paint went on chunky, the washes are going to look terrible, so make sure you've got a nice coat on.
4) Thraka Green wash. This stuff's fantastic. My usual method is to grab a whole bunch and heap it on the skin areas. The Citadel washes are well-behaved, and can be steered around the model with your brush and a tiny bit of water. If you find you have excess wash, dry off your brush on a paper towel, then touch the brush to the excess wash areas; it will 'sponge' the wash off the area it's touching. With a bit of water and your brush, push the wash off raised surfaces so that you don't get any of the shade drying in dark spots on raised areas like muscles. It should all settle nicely in the crevasses.
5) Let the last step's wash dry completely. Then, do it again! I usually water the wash down more at this stage before applying it, just because I don't want the green to overpower the model; heap too much on and you're painting a Nob, not a boy. The way the Citadel washes dry makes a fantastic, blended-looking transition between the dark crevasses and the brighter raised areas.
6) Let the second thraka green wash dry... and break out the Badab Black wash. Grab a brush with a nice point, dip it in the wash, and start brushing the ork skin, following the crevasse lines between muscles and bulges. These areas should, by now, be substantially darker than the surrounding skin, thanks to the 2x Thraka washes. A bit of water will help the badab black stay in just the recesses, but be careful not to use too much, or it'll start running down the model and onto parts you didn't intend to get!
At this point, you're usually done, and it looks like you spent a lot of time blending and getting the highlights right. If the skin looks too dark, as can sometimes happen with too much Thraka Green or Badab Black, it's fixable (though this method, like most painting, looks better if you get it right the first time ). Grab some straight Goblin Green on a brush, and brush it on the raised surfaces like musculature, brows, whatever, doing your best to keep the paint away from any of the darker recesses. A quick Thraka Green brushed over these highlighted areas will help blend the brighter spots together with the darker ones.
Grots in my army get almost the exact same treatment, but I start with a brighter green before I start washing. Something like Scorpion Green will go on well over the Goblin Green, and will make for brighter colored grots. For darker Nobz, just wash more; liberal use of thraka green and badab black washes will inevitably prove to make darker skin.
This guy was done using the above method, mostly:
I started with a grey primer on that model, but the foundation Knarloc Green undercoat basically means you get the same results no matter what color primer you're working from.
This is my preferred painting method right now, just because of how brainless it is. I don't have to worry about blending colors, placing highlights, or anything all that advanced. I can veg out in front of the TV, apply washes with about 5% of my brain, and do other stuff. The Citadel Washes are fantastic enough to take care of the rest.

You did ask for fast, so a lot of the more sophisticated layering approaches are probably out...
One thing I did on my orks, was to do a wash/glaze after the drybrushing/highlighting. A lot of times people will wash first, drybrush second. By washing last, you can get a blending effect that smoothes out the color a lot. Go a bit lighter than you think you should, because when you wash/glaze over it with a dark green color, you'll darken all the paint.
On my orks I basecoated black, then Dark Angels Green (this is pre Orkhide shade), dry brushed a lighter shade, then highlighted over that with an even lighter shade, which I painted on to look striated, as muscles. Can't recall the paints I used here, but it's really more up to you anyway. Over that, a mix of dark green ink, clear medium and water. The final glaze really smoothed things out, but still let the striations show.

Hi
At the end of this thread, where I asked roughly the same question, you can see the results of trying out the citadel washes on the figs:

I do:
1. Catachan Green over a black undercoat
2. Devlan Mud wash over the Catachan.
3. Heavy drybrush of Camo Green.
4. Highlight with Rotting Flesh and Bleached Bone.
5. Finish off with 2 coats of Sepia Gryphonne wash.

Thanks everyone for the plethora of ideas! I really do appreciate it! I'm gonna end up with a unit of 'various' shades of Orks.
That's okay though, it'll be Orky!

My method isn't simple, and it's no good for mass production. I want all of my orks to look unique, thus I paint their skin tones slightly different everytime. Yeah every now and again I end up with simmillar looking colours but at the end of the day, I'm not making a rainbow army.
However for a standard green ork I would use a black undercoat, followed by Orkhide, then I gradually work my way up in layers from orkhide to goblin green. Next I use the thrakka green, and then starting from goblin green I work my way up to half and half goblin green and bleach bone. Add another thrakka green wash and then add, 3/4 bleachbone to 1/4 goblin green mix, and a pure bleach bone for extremes. Some times if I want darker looking I'll add another wash at the end or don't use the pure bleach bone. For yoofs, I take it lighter quicker and have a half and half bleacjh bone/skull white mix on the extremes.
Thats pretty much how I did the Nob in my Avatar.
For different skin tones however I add a different wash the second time, build my new colours from there (this is how they are different every time because the colours are mixed for each model), finally once I reach the last stage I the different colour wash mixed with thrakka green over the top. Although this much effort isn't really neccesary, you can just wash a different colour over the green, like Gryphon Sepia, Devlan Mud, Ogryn Flesh etc.
I have some photos on my website, I'll see about linking them here at some point.

So I tried this painting technique first...
Cryonicleech: "I must grab some of this Devlan (Mud) Miracle. Perhaps if I drink it I will become a master painter!"
It seemed like the easiest and fastest way to success, but here is what happened...
Don't do me anymore favors!
Seriously, thanks for all of the great ideas, I have more-than-enough for now and I will be starting them later in the month and showing off various results.

Ok, no pic I'm afraid but here's my method:
1) Knarloc green basecoat
2) wash of watered down (approx 1:5 water) orkhide shade - this is the main point at which I get variation between models, eg boyz vs nobs etc, via two methods. adjusting the wash mix and running a damp brush across the raised areas to 'soak up' excess orkhide shade
3) 1:1 knarloc green:glaze medium across the majority of the raised areas
4) 1:1 goblin green:glaze medium across the 'upper' raised areas
5) 1:1:2 goblin green:bleached bone:glaze medium highlights (repeated twice in some areas)
Note that the mixes used in steps 3-5 probably depend on your technique - I normally use a size 1 brush lightly loaded with paint (wiped off on some tissue a couple of times after dipping in the pallette)
I've found this gives a fairly 'matt' finish to my orks rather than the brighter finish that you tend to get with mainly goblin green scheme

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

I think I finally found my own recipe for fast, decent looking ork skin. I'll try to post up some pictures of how it looks.
Recipe is as follows:
1. Prime black
2. Mix together Dheneb Stone and Gretchin Green, and basecoat the skin.
The exact ratio is not important, though for orks you will want to do at least 40% Gretchin Green, 60% Dheneb Stone, though you can add more Gretchin Green if you like. For Grot skin, do mostly Dheneb Stone with about 25% Gretchin Green.
3. Mix together Gryphonne Sepia Wash and Thraka Green wash, at about a 50 - 50 split. Wash this over your model.
The Sepia tones down the brightness of the green and makes it warmer as well, more of an olive tone. Put down the Sepia first, then the Thraka Green, since the green is darker. Adding darker colors later will let you adjust your mix easier if you don't like the look of it right away.
4. Done. You'll have a nice 'warmer' somewhat olive green that isn't a bright Christmas green for your ork skin.
If you like, you can do a thinned out mix of Thraka Green over the top of the skin just to brighten the color a bit, or just to make the skin of he boyz a little different.
Quick and easy.
