Hi

Im trying to paing the Deceiver a Necron fluff appropriate theme. The problem is im not that experienced in painting and so I wanted to avoid the difficult themes yet I wanted to have a passable and painted Deceiver for my games.

So I thought about the necrodermis and the shapeshifting abilities of the CTANs and decided on a black scheme with maybe a sense of smoke.
Of the deceiver black only would look unpainted so I thought about giving him highlights of maybe gray so as to sharpen details and make the model actually look somehow good but still retain the black/smoke effect.

I NEED HELP !

Any tips on how to do it ? like, drybrushing him codex grey on top of black ? use some ink ? change themes all together?
I still want my Deceiver fairly Shadow colour however.

If he's going to have that 'all metal' look. I'd imagine it'd be simple enough to use a basecoat of black, bolt gun metal and a wash of Badab black. you can go back and use boltgun metal to give a slight highlight since the wash will tone it down, I did this for a few ork weapons I did, gives a nice effect.

Uhh, Kommando Khaki and Codex Grey dry brushing would help. It'd look really good over a Gun Metal body that has been washed a couple times with Badab Black.

EDIT: Blast, the Rat beat me to it!

No no forget about metal

Think shadow. Though just painted with a black undercoat doesnt look good at all. I need somekind of highlights I guess?
but which? and how ?

I think just massive dry brushing of various greys, washing it in Badab Black to blend them, then highlighting with more dry brush would look great on a Chaos Black base. I still think some Boltgun metal would give it a nice sheen though.

I have the BLACK INK is that similar to badab black ? And as for washing , does washing means painting the whole model with ink and then let it dry ? even the grey highlights?

Sorry, Didn't know you were avoiding the metallic look necrons usually are painted. Codex gray would work fine in that case. Painting a basecoat of black will make it look darker, and the wash will do the same, while filling in crevices and giving you that smokey 'shadow' look you want.

Now, I'm not too familiar with inks myself, but a wash is basically a very loose application of a color, Its made to fill in crevices, corners and the such. Saves a lot of time if you don't want to be bothered using a bunch different colors for a shadow and highlight look.
