How would you base an ork?

i need ideas

95% of teens would go into a panic attack if the jonas brothers were about to jump off the empire state building copy and paste this if you are the 5% who would pull up a lawn chair grab some popcorn and yell JUMP BITCHES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My orks are based rather simply for the horde troopers. I paint the entire base Codex grey, then glue model train ballast over top of it (grey and black). This gives the look of them being on a rather rocky, blasted wasteland.

For characters or other important things, I'd recommend that you take a look in the Articles section of the site. There are many wonderful resources about how to make really cool bases.

Hope that helps.

You could use bits of twisted pieces of plastic.Heres what I do.After clipping the pieces that you need, twist, scrape cut the plastic in random uneven ways. You will have orks who look like they just crashed in a space hulk.
Good luck!

I bought a bag of fish-tank gravel for 2 bucks. I will be adding this black rubble to the bases of my Orks, possibly with standard burnt-green flock added as well.

I use a base of medium ballast (model train mini rocks) and then highlight bits of it in some grass or dirt flock for some color. But I like the troop bases pretty plain.

Current Armies:

Warmachine:
Shae Pirate's Life 50
Durgen attrition 50

WH40K:
Orks (5,000 pt Apoc Kan Wall, 1850 Bikerz)
Grey Knights (1850 Crowe Purifiers, 2500 'Ard Boyz Draigo)
Sisters of Battle (Seraphim spam)

WHFB:

I base my orks by painting the top of the base Bestial Brown, then glue on the GW Modeling Sand (don't use rocks, or fish gravel, they are too big and look odd). Then paint Bestial Brown over the sand, then 2 washes of Devlan Mud. Drybrush Bleached Bone and wash it again in Devlan Mud. The base edges are Scorched Brown.

Thats cool, you can use fine cat litter. You get a 5 or 10 lb bag for a couple bucks, and the gravel in there, is that size and smaller. Just used that technique on my necromunda gang. Looks great

I'm making some bases for my girlfriends Orks by making use of stuff in my bits box. I'm using bits like twisted flag poles, equipment and plasticard for scrap metal. I glue them directly to a plain base then build up layers of building sand around it. Using super glue instead of PVA gives it more of a rough texture.

Armies:
(CSM/HH) - Iron Warriors; Death Guard; World Eaters; Night Lords
IG - Vestfalian Expeditionary
Force (Solar Auxilia - HH)
SM - Blades of Inaros (Homebrew)
DE - Kabal of Ouroboros

Now most people will say don't use real sand and such, but I was very lucky in that I found some really fine dust that looked perfect for miniatures. It had lots of different shades in it and was really fine. Almost looked like sand to scale, that how fine it is.

I simply painted the base in a very dark brown, then using superglue added the dust. after that I added small patched of scorched ground static flock and one or two of the larger bits of gravle that were in the bag.

It also depends on what sort of a world you want them to be standing on, because there are lots of good techniques that give lots of different effects. Like cutting up small bits of cereal box card to make it look like old broken paving stones with dust and gravel around them. You can make swamplands using a thick layer of PVA glue and brissles from a sweeping brush for reeds. It's totally in the realms of your imagination, how far you want to go and how much your moddeling knowledge will allow you to go, but experimatation is always a good start.

Try getting a bag of bases and experiment making small amounts of terain on them.

But to be honnest basing isn't requirement really... not unless your entering the minature into a competition at least.

Painting your models isn't a requirement really...

Seriously - if you're going to go to the trouble of painting your models, at least base them to the bare minimum - green paint + flock or they just look unfinished, and are a disservice to the time and effort you put in painting the rest of your model!

for my marines I did a space hulk style basing. Plasticard strips, boltgun metal colour as a base with many layers of washes to give it a rust/tarnished/soiled appearance.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Hulk

it was a game that was similar to space crusade-played on card templates. i really want them to do a new FPS of it-it'd be great!

a space hulk is a deserted space ship that is floating around-usually commendered by orks to use as transport, or infested with genestealers.

Yeah it's an empty ship.Thats why alot of ork attacks are random because they pop in and out of the warp and randomly crash n a planet

It must be pointed out about the tale of WAAAGH! Grizgutz. An ork Warlord that got so lost in the warp that he popped out at his home planet a few days BEFORE they set off. Grizguts then hunts down and kills the past version of himself so that he can have a spare of his favourite gun. However the temporal paradox and the confusion of the other orks, who to be fair have very little idea of how the Warp stuff works anyway, causes the WAAAGH to come to a screaming hault.

The only thing I'd avoid with ork bases is green (e.g. the classic green 'grass') - green skin on a green base doesn't usually stand out well. Ok, one exception might be camouflaged Kommandoes!

Other than that, just work out your army theme and make the bases match, e.g. a Speed Freeks army might look good with bases that look like churned up mud covered in tyre tracks, a Deff Skull army might look good with bases covered in their opponents' wrecked equipment, etc.

Here is mine. Two types of Railroad ballast for the Rank&File boy. Simple but I think effective.

Note: These models have too much matte varnish on them but it still shows my bases well enough.
