A friend of mine wants to buy space marines, but he doesnt know if he needs to paint them a certain way to be able to use the dreadnought in AoBR. I had heard only ultramarines can use them. Does the paint matter?

No,Smurfs colours are just what the eavy metal team tell us is cool(I swear all they can paint is blue marines).

So they don't have to be painted a certain way.

You can dip it in pink paint for all I care, I'd still play a game with you.

There are absolutely no restrictions. I've seen someone paint that Dread in Imperial Fist colours before. He was viciously beaten for it but by gum he did it.

Armies:
(CSM/HH) - Iron Warriors; Death Guard; World Eaters; Night Lords
IG - Vestfalian Expeditionary
Force (Solar Auxilia - HH)
SM - Blades of Inaros (Homebrew)
DE - Kabal of Ouroboros

To be clear, you're not required to paint your marines in one of those colors if you're DIYing, but they are some nice suggestions.

And remember, to us hordeys all you marines look alike...

Yo man. It's like this. If only ultrasmurfs are allowed to use them then why does the dreadnought come unpainted? It doesn't matter if you paint them black, white, purple, green or any other freakin colour of the rainbow.

I just finished up an AoBR dread in Grey Knights colors with a few bits added to pimp it out. Got another one to paint up just like it waiting to get started.

If I for start a SM army (probably due to the build up of Black Reach while trying to get my Orks prepared) I'm definately going to do Ultramarines. Scary yeh? But I'd go for Tyranic War vets supported by Genesis and Imperial Fist elements. It's just paint, do whatever you want so long as it's in the Codex.

Anyone else notice that there are no Blood Angel, Dark Angel, Black Templar or Space Wolves in that gallery? or even their successors

In a world gone mad, who is left to fight for truth, justice and all that gets you smashed for under a fiver....

First played 40k during 2nd edition, missed out 3rd and 4th, and haven't played 40k since 5th edition - but still read and occasionally paint

One... they get done to death. Two... kind of hard for there to be black templar successors since they themselves are a successor chapter of the Imperial Fists.

@Grim. Badger: There are no BA,DA,BT,SW marines because they are not codex chapters and have thier own army list. The gallery is just showing different colour schemes for the VANNILLA MARINES.

Of course there are Black Templar successors. There have been more than a first and second founding, so lots of successor chapters have successors of their own. Of course, all Black Templar successor chapters would also be Imperial Fist successors, but that's no big deal.

But the reason they wouldn't have any of those here? They each have their own codex (whether or not it is current) so the chapters we see here are only for the group of marines that follow vanilla Space Marine Codex rules.
