Hello and welcome to what I hope will come to be a rather sizable project involving many members of the Dakka Community!!

Currently I am planning a very large model, and I need help on making it look unique! That's where you come in!
I'm asking anyone who's interested to build/paint/create armor plates for an Ork vehicle!

DETAILS

  • I'd like to see at least 10 people willing to contribute to this project.

  • As long as you are able to send a letter to the US, you are able to participate!

  • Armor can be made any size/shape within .5 inch to 4 inches squared. If you choose to make a larger plate (Ill call it at >2.5 inches) Id like to see the plates more detailed, as they will be more prominent on the finished model.

  • Anything can be put on these plates. Graffiti, glyphs, chapter markings (from looted armor of course ), camo, anything you can think of that would be on an ork vehicle!

  • I would like to see at least one armor plate per person, however you are more than welcome to make more if you feel generous

  • As of yet, no deadline is set. Im in the planning phase of construction, so Id say around the middle of September Ill be ready for parts.

  • The unabridged original post follows::

    What is it?

"Project M" is the most ambitious project I have ever devised, perhaps being an endeavor that will find few parallels on the internet today. Much of its deeper workings I cannot divulge at this point in time, as this is something I want to show in its full glory, not broken into pieces.
I can only say that if what I have in mind comes to fruition, it will be simply magnificent.

Late one night as I was cutting armor for the "DeffRay", I came to think "What could I do to this armor to make it unique?" Sure, I painted a few lines of graffiti on some, iconography from a Space Marine chapter on others. But the plates I painted seemed to blend in with each other, the same style and colors meshing too well with each other, losing much of the "looted" effect that I was striving for.

I realized that for this "Project M" to be unique, truly unique, I would need an outside source for aid.

But what does this have to do with me?
I know very well we have an astounding array of artists and modelers here, the gallery here is a testament to that.
And so brings me to the whole point of this thread:

I am looking for artists that would be willing to contribute to this effort by painting an armor plate or two for the project. It doesn't matter what your skill might be, whether you are a skilled painter or an aspiring newcomer, I only ask that you paint.
Any size, any shape, any kind of design or battle damage you might see fit.

I hope to make this into a community project here at Dakka, where any number of people can look at the finished project and go "I helped build that."

And so I close this post, leaving it to you, my fellow Dakkaites, to decide if its something you might be interested in.
If I've posted this in the incorrect forum, then Mods please feel free to correct me.
    Thanks for your time.

    That is a great title

What is a "deffray"? I'm picturing a battle wagon gun, but I don't plan orks. If it is a larger orky tank, please forgive my ignorance!

My brother used to play orks back in the day, and I loved seeing him "loot" his vehicles and paint all sorts of things on them! I would definitely paint an armor plate for this project. I am in the "inexperienced" painter category, but since you welcomed anyone, I'd like to sign on .

I'd like for there to be a critical mass to get started (10 Dakka-ites? More?) and for there to be a firm finishing date to send the armor plate to you by.

It would also be helpful to have:

    1) A picture of the vehicle the armor plates will be going on
    2) A size estimate for the armor plates (so that they are within a reasonable range)

Great idea... I hope this gains momentum! And sign me up

    Oh excellent excellent!

Here I thought I scared everyone away with my uber-long and vague post I tend to get wordy after I write Role-Play posts.

The "DeffRay" is a nickname I gave to my looted Tau Sky Ray.

Looted wagon with an interesting take on the Boomgun.

I agree on a critical mass, Id like to see as many options and styles as possible before plating the model. It would certainly add to the looted aspect!

Now a deadline for plates.... hmmm.... Ill think on that. See how many people we get and judge from there.
Id probably like to see some ready by say.... Mid-September?

Now to pics... well... thats the kicker.
    The vehicle in question doesn't exist yet ^^;
Im half-considering breaking a part of the surprise if you really need to know what "Project M" truly entails.

But size-wise. I can easily say anywhere from an inch square to 3 or 4 inches square, and any size in between. (granted the larger ones would need to be more detailed)

After we get a beta-testing group up, Ill pop up a list of things id like to see done to the plates, mostly common sense like priming and if possible, flat clear-coating

Neat! the first ones out of the US!

To answe you questions, no i don't think it will be a problem.
Fortunately for us, plasticard and other "armor" is not very heavy, and US airmail for normal-size/weight letters is less than a buck and id imagine that this price is similar in Australia/UK.
The greatest issue with nternational shipping is the time it takes. But since the deadlines are very flexible, we're in luck!

So in short, as long as you can send a regular letter to the US, you can definitely participate!

I have no real criteria about what goes on an armor plate. I leave that entirely to the artist.
My goal is to get a truly unique looted look, so really anything can be painted on them. Marine chapter markings, graffiti, pictures, camo... All up to you guys!

Can we put orky glyphs on aswell ? And how many are you asking from each person again, just as many as they want ?

I can't wait to find out more about what this "mystery" vehicle is... from the size of those plates you listed, it must be BIG!!

I'm planning to do mine out of plasticard... no spare ork bits here (since I don't play orks)

Is this dying? Do we need an abbreviated version that people can understand easier? Maybe the title should be less ambiguous after all

    Hmm... possible.

I figured it'd take a little bit to get a number of people together.

Ill go ahead and make an abridged version, then pop in a new title.

    EDIT!
    And done!

Hopefully we can draw more people in! ^^

You can count me in. I've not modelled orks before, but I imagine an armor plate or two would be pretty easy.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

This intrigues me, any shape restrictions? ie. does it have to be flat or can it be angular.

I'd be interested in helping out as well.

    Like what do ya mean?
like a corner piece? or angular rather than rectangular?
All I have right now are size restrictions. I figured most people would do roughly rectangular shapes.

Depending how well you could do one or the other, Id welcome it all the same!

Ill send ya a PM on the details in a sec.
