hey im brand new to warhammer about to order my first pieces but i dont know what to get i want something like space hulk a stand alone game i can play with friends that is pick up an play with out the need for masses of figures can you guys help me choose as i really want to get stuck in and dont know if getting masses of figures is for me , something like space hulk that you can stand alone in .

Welcome, Are you asking for what would be a cheap choice for real time Warhammer?. And to answer that Guard or Space Marine's.

Space Hulk is cool though. I got to play for the first time the other day.

Hi kirkieball , atm Space Hulk is the only stand alone game i think that you can play straight out of the box without any need for expansion.

The rest of the warhammer fantasy and 40k game line requires atleast 2 armies to play . And it'll usually run atleast $200-$400 USD

im really really new not a single figure if anyone can give me pointers on where to buy for cheapness / where to start i would really like to collect space marines if i cannot get stand alone games played with minimal figures , i live in northern ireland and appreciate any help with the kinds of paint to where is the best places to get them figure/ paint / starter stuff from lol thanks

Assault On Black Reach is technically all you need to play small games of 40K, and get a grounding of the rules, and if you're interested in collecting an army of Orks or Space Marines, you've got the beginnings of a future fully-fledged army right there. Plenty of models in that box, and eveything else you need except glue, clippers and a knife or file. And obviously paints if you get that far... but Space Hulk miniature are unpainted too.

To boot, it's significantly cheaper than Space Hulk. If you're more interested in the tabletop wargame format than just another boardgame, I highly recommend it as a great place to start.

For cheapness, you can look into online retailers, but if you have a local hobby/gaming store, the convenience of a place to play is worth paying retail price.

I ended up getting hooked on the space marines and have spent loads on em, and now it's a HUGE army!

Welcome to Dakka. Like they said Black Reach or Space Hulk. However they don't use the same rules. AOBR is a boxed set intro to WH40K under 5th edtion rules. Space Hulk is a limited reissue of an old game with new figures. Each stand alone as a complete game.

Warhammer provides a vast number of stand alone games called specialist games.. Each Game has a gaming system.

Bloodbowl allows players to build their own american football team, quiet cheap round £20 for a team.
Takes nearly 90mins up to 2hours to play, easy to pick up and more players the better.

Mordheim allows you to build up a warband and have small skirmishes ready to treasure hunt within a devastated city,
Ideally, you choose the warband that you can also use in Warhammer Fantasy Battle so you only buy the models once

Warhammer Fantasy Battle is a medieval sword and shield game for large scale battles rather than skirmishes..
Build up army in 500pt chucks to get the most out of the game

Gorkamorka allows you to build your own vehicles and start off with a small number of Orks.

40K is a futuristic guns and tanks game for large scale battles rather than skirmishes..
Build up army in 500pt chucks to get the most out of the game. Just most models cant be transferred to other games.

As others have said, Space Hulk is a fine stand-alone game.
Pappa Shango also list GW's other offerings.

Assault on Black Reach works well as a "Stand Alone" game - it includes everything you need to play Orks vs Marines, and can form the core of larger armies if you decide to expland later on.

Yeah papa shango got all the ones that use figures that have creatures or humans. There is also Battlefleet Gothic which you control an entire fleet of intergalactic ships and blow worlds up or control them. BTW welcome to dak dak.

It's like the kiddy-happy-meal-starter set of 40k. Gives you rules, dice, templates and a force of both SM and Orks.

Since you are new to miniatures gaming, you may not be aware that there are many games out there other than those produced by GW. Some of these are much cheaper and many require a much smaller collection of models.

You may want to look into Full Thrust, Stargrunt or AT-43 (just to name a few). Full Thrust in particular is a nice system that is very cheap to get started in (free to download rules).

IMO - Assault On Black Reach(WH40K) is the one to go for and I'll tell you why: it's got 'Legs'. You CAN play it straight out of the box if you want, but should you decide to continue to get more into the hobby (and you will - 40K is basically just crack!) then you can make your games and armies as large and as complicated as you want. Plus you can build scenery with household objects that look sufficiently 'tech'. Space Hulk is more immediate, but with a shorter shelf life.
AOBR is £48 in the UK now, so pretty similar to SH in price...

I would go with the starter box over Spulk too. I think you'd find more opponents to play 40k.

Also, if you find someone else to buy a starter box, you two can swap off one of the armies and each have a decent size army. Purchase a few Heavy Units and Fast Attack, maybe another HQ and your there.

The starter set models are no way near the quality of the Space Hulk models, but they're not too bad.- and you get pretty many.

Scenery is VERY easy to make. Hills out of bits of packing foam, buildings from cardboard. Bunkers from 25-blank CD cases and towers from 100-CD cases.
Craters from paper-mache, fences from lolly-sticks, razor-wire from any twisted wire.

pick up just about anything from the house, tip it sidewards or upside down, and say "What could that be?" ... You'll soon have several fine pieces of terrain to fight over!

Plus foil cartons (pie dishes, chinese food cartons etc) can be inverted and turned into craters. True story.

Well, you say you don't want masses of figures, then you can forget about Orks and Imperial Guard. I would say Grey Knights/Daemonhunters or Tau. However GK is rather expensive as it is all metal but you don't need much at all.

You can either stick with just AoBR, and some various scenery, making up your own rules and scenarios to keep things interesting (e.g. "The Orks have looted the Marine Dreadnought? It has to get all the way across the table for an extra Point." or "marines start out in lots of bunkers with built-in guns, but any Ork deffKoptas that get killed come back (Reinforcements turn up)" - anything you like!), or you can buy some extra models to make bigger/more varies armies ...

and AOBR is very nice if you wanna play orks or marines but i would suggest looking into trades or something along those lines or ebay for cheap armies

i got the figures but got the wrong type of paints :( but hopefully they will come tomorrow i got Vallejo paints ink .... and shoulda got colour , luckily i didn't spend to much and am getting 16 paints tomorrow hopefully fingers crossed thanks guys and keep suggestions coming

Inks are handy for shading. You wash a darker ink over a lighter colour paint and it settles into the recesses, giving a shadow effect. Many tutorials available, out there on the big wide interwebz! (Maybe even some here on Dakka!)
