Pete got wacked if memory serves. He probably commanded too big a salary and suffered an administrative termination.
Andy did jump ship and the scuttlebutt was the departure was due to creative differences. As the rumor goes he presented a greatly improved 40K v4 that was too radical for the suits and they pretty much axed it and sent him back to the drawing board. Supposedly this was the foundation of the Starship Troopers game rules.
All this is rumor of course and I have no direct insight into any behind the scenes reality.

Andy Chambers. Sacked for being rude to other members of staff. Had apparently been warned before? SST thing is utter myth as far as I know.
Pete Haines? No idea, but I'm glad to see the back of him. Best example ever of why you do not give a writer the chance to do the rules for their favourite rules. Dwarfs. No Weakness. Iron Warriors, no Weakness.....

Rumors about Chambers have been floating around for years. I even heard one rumor that he left after having an affair with another staffers wife.
Not a clue about the SST rumor, though I've never played it myself I heard lots of positive things about it. Shame it's basically dead.
Anyway Chambers is now working for Blizzard and is almost certainly now earning more money than he could ever dreamed of being paid by GW she's had the last laugh no matter what the circumstances of him leaving GW.

Damn good boost in career...to go from GW overseeing a rules/minis writing team to working for a multi-billion dollar company.
Hell, I'd jump at the chance too.

The rules for SST sounded interesting, sucks to hear that could have been 40k.

Andy Chambers did indeed leave GW under a bit of a cloud, but there's NDA covering most of it.
He did indeed then do some work for Mongoose and some of the SST rules are indeed his work and might showcase some of the ideas and mechanics he wanted to put into 40k. But seeing as, from my understanding, the draft of the rules he delivered would have invalidated the entire codex range ala3rd edition and this was not his brief.
Pete haines had been recruited for GW --again, he worked for them years and years ago..Golden Heroes FTW --by Andy and he was left in a bit of an awkward place. AS GW took the chance to jig around with the design studio, not least as they were keen to move away from the "superstar" status that had ( at least partially) led to the problems that occurred, they "re evaluated".. some salaries and positions. Pete didn't want to take a pay cut ( I understand he'd already taken 1 when he came to GW) he decided to take the pay off they were offering and leave.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Fortunately the loss of the star designers has not led to any drop in quality of the rules and codexes.
GW have also managed to maintain their output of non-core games.

MDG: Movement 3 isn't a weakness? Because of course, Dwarves are winning all the tournaments.
Late 3rd edition and early 4th was the worst time for the game, I think. It's when the Imperium Centric release schedule was really set in stone, and pointless, badly written dexes started to come out instead of keeping on top of updating what we had already, the legacy of which we are still dealing with today.
So good riddance to Haines, I say.

As opposed to late 4th/early 5th where we got the Dark Angels and Chaos Codices, the legacy of which we're still mucking our way through today.

You mean late 4th early 5th?
Dark Angels and chaos were bad, but at least they didn't bloat out the release schedule with crud. I know you're a fan of Daemonhunters, but I'm dead against it even existing for a lot of reasons. Black Templars, likewise.

So old Pete "Page 78(?)" Haines is another worthy addition to your Rogue Designers Gallery then? Right alongside Supremo Johnson and Copy-Pasta Kinrade?

At one of the last Games Days I enjoyed (...) I had Hainsey sign a box of kroot I happened to have with me, because I was so psyched about the release of C: CSM. I recently came across that signed box and I'm pretty sure I threw it out Frankly what Haines did to chaos marines always reminded me of what Alessio did to Skaven - take the army you play, rewrite the book to be uber, profit. No judgment attached in these two cases though, as I play both armies too Thanks for the recap Red. - Salvage

Chambers was a kool guy too.
Come to think of it, there were only two or three guys that I didn't like working with there.
