I've been hearing a lot of talk about how powerful the Space Wolves are of late, but I haven't bothered to follow the specifics. As someone heading off to the GT next month, I believe in the proverbial , 'Know thine enemy'.

So what's hot, and what's not with Space Wolves, and why? Are there any special rules someone try and deliberately use wrong that I should be aware of? I've heard Thunderwolf Cavalry are the next best thing, but why? What do they do?

Im not too familiar with space wolves , but some of the more powerful things they can do are:

Jaws of the World Wolf : 24 inch range , draw a straight line passing through any enemy and terrain . Any models with wounds must pass initiative test or be removed from game.

Long Fangs: If you have a leader he can do "Fire Control" , the heavy weapons can target 2 separate enemy units.

Thunder Wolf Calvary : Str 5 , T5 , 2W , 4 Attacks , Rending in CC , Acute Senses , Counter Attack , can take all the terminator CC weapons + Frost Axe .
they are like stronger version of Assault Terminator .

Achualy what makes them good is having 5x Heavy weapons and 10pt MLs, 'split fire' is a bonus

There good, but there better at taking on tactical squads, dreads, ork mobs etc. Units like TH/SS Termies will own these guys. You can try and make them as good as TH/SS Termies but its expensive.

From what I've heard, Jaws is vastly overrated (unless you are playing 'Nidzilla). Long Fangs are great (seriously), but Thunderwolves aren't the new TH/SS Termies. They are vehicle hunting cavalry, and they are darned good at it too.

Anyway, all the rage seems to be that Grey Hunters are now the best infantry for their points, and get even better in Drop Pods. Practice your castling and you should be fine though.

Scouts have marine stats and can outflank from any board edge (including the long edges) on a 3+ roll.

They are suddenly the most powerful psykers in the game. Jaws of the world wolf combined with Tempest I think it is, is absolutely murderous to Tau (JoTWW wipes out broadside suits, tempest forces crisis suits to either sit still and get run down in assault, or take 4 dangerous terrain tests per suit per turn if they use their jet packs).

Thunderwolf Cavalry is extremely fast, with an assault range of 19-24"

Against armies that are not so range dependent as Tau, they probably aren't such a pain in the butt. It's the whole super-psyker thing that gets me really.

They seem pretty darn cheesy to me.... Space Marines on giant wolves sounds like a motivational poster to me.

i'd add the caveat that the thunderwolves are light to medium vehicle hunting cavalry without adding meltabombs. i didn't think of that option and wound up facing two land raiders with only a miniscule chance of a glancing hit. i'll be taking them from now on 100% just in case.

sure they do, but the meltabomb is 5 points for each model. i personally don't plan on fielding 100pt thunderwolf cav with TH/SS combos; i'd rather have more models instead. the meltabombs allow me to threaten landraiders at a minimal cost.
