Subject: Sad realization about the LRBT

So, I've been playing IG since 3rd edition, and the basic LRBT has been a part of my arsenal ever since. In discussions here, I've defended it's role in the new codex, but I think it's time for me to admit: it's simply not that good.
It still does what it always does, but the executioner does it twice as good for 150% of the cost. It's primary target, MEQs, are once again either in rhinos or in 4+ cover, and the same rules that make it a little more durable at range make the battle cannon a really poor anti-tank weapon.
With the options available to the IG, the LRBT just isn't a top shelf unit anymore.

I gotta agree.
I consider the Basilisk, Executioner, Demolisher, and Colossus to all be a better option.
I mean, the Leman Russ isn't bad by any means (*cough* Punisher *cough*), but with so many more tanks rolling around it's just being outpaced.

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it. |

Hasnt got the range of the Executioner.
Hasnt got the strength of the Executioner.
It makes the perfect heavy armour buddie for the tank where which-ever one acts as bodyguard to the other, depending on the situation.

I think its an alright tank, not specializing in anything but being a 14 front armour tank

The basic russ is still good. However, the advent of 5th ed gave it a couple of disadvantages versus 4th ed.
1. Cover saves got improved, and vehicles also get cover saves - thus the main advantage of a large ap3 pie plate got lessened.
2. In assault, vehicles use their rear armor - this makes the russ just like most of the vehicles out there, and thus more vulnerable.
As many have said, the russ is still a great tank. But the improved artillery selection really makes indirect fire very attractive, mainly because cover saves are negated assuming the target is in the open while behind something, and that many indirect fire units can also fire directly without a minimum range if necessary, and finally because artillery tanks are also cheaper.

Does the ability to run them in squadrons make the lower point cost of the standard LRBT potentially more important

I like running mine in squads of 2, gives them a decent punch, yes cover saves getting improved hurts like hell, but it makes my oponentts think twice about going into the open. being able to move and fire with all weapons is a great big bonus to them as well, you can try and get aroun the cover of the target unit while pounding them with heavy bolter and cannon fire.

Please reread Lumbering Behemoth. It doesn't allow you to drive around and fire all weapons. It allows you got ignore or not-count the turret weapon when determining how many (and which) weapons that can fire.

Correct. This can only happen if your russ has no sponsons....

The LRMBT do have the option of becoming quite a lot sexier by adding plasma sponsons. I've run a LRMBT+plasma+HF for a while now, and I'm very happy with it's performance. Sure, the executioner may be even hotter, but the LRMBT is cheaper to bring to the date, and you don't loose that much efficiency.
The plain old 150 LRMBT may not be awesome, but it does what it says on the label, and it hardly ever dies. It also has range on the other russes, which in a lot of cases means the difference between a russ that shots 6-7 times in a game, and a smoking wreck after 1-2 rounds of fire. The added range and lower threat of the naked russ gives it more time to dish out the pain
