Well I'm torn between Orks and Imperial Guard for my army. Either way I plan on making a infantry horde army. And I'm wondering which would be better for a beginner?

Reasons for why I should do one or the other would be apreceated. Oh and I don't really plan on doing much if any conversions for my army.

Thanks in advance.

Orks. Their the Meanest army if your going for an Infantry Horde. Get about 150 Slugga Boyz (5 units of 30) and 2 KFF Mechs, maybe 9 Killa Kans for the Kan wall thing. Then just sit back and watch the chaos unfold as you stomp your opponent into the ground.

For a beginner, yes, Orks will work best. Every game is played exactly the same: run everything directly at the enemy.

As you get some experience, you will find that they do not have a lot of the flexibility to deal with strategies people bring to higher point games.

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

Orks are easier to get the hang on mass infantry, but IG have a learning curve. Guard need good decision making with their orders, and the better you get with that, the better your army plays. Guard can have better and larger melee blobs than orks (re-roll to hit, Furious Charge, re-rollable Stubborn instead of Fearless, MASS POWER WEAPONZZZ), and generally more powerful shooting. Orks on the other hand get harder, more rugged infantry, with some nice toys.

IG horde needs the orders to make a few squads perform sporadically amazing, while Orks are solid performers all the time.

I love imperial guard. i Have 5 different Guard Regiments That specialize in different areas. They are very good at surviving what the enemy throws at you because there are so many guardsmen. They are amazingly good when the orders system is used properly.

However (Emperor forgive me for saying this) i do believe that orks are a very good army to start with, they take almost no tactical thinking, can survive a fair beating, and are easy to paint.

If you want to win your games and destroy your enemies will to live, i would recomend Imperial Guard, but if you want to have a lot of fun while not winning as frequently, play orks.

Orks, they use the same tactics as IG, but do it with humour!

Go Orks because if your winning - you can call being competitive and if your losing - its just a game and have some fun because everybody expects Orks to do stupid stuff.

IG is be competitive or get massacred.

Orks are the way to go. I love the Guard, but Orks are much friendlier to a newcomer. You can start off with a really simple force - just some boyz and a boss - and the more you play, the more complex you can make your army. You can start to work in Nobz, Lootas, bikers, you name it. They're also a load of fun to play as.

Also, think over which army you'd have more fun painting. The idea of painting hundreds of big green dudes might not sound like fun. You can also get a really cheap start with Orks through Black Reach. There's always tons of folks on eBay and the Swap Shop here that are willing to dump off their Black Reach boyz.

Both are good armies, and both can be made to do some awesome shooting (Orks need to really focus on shooting, though, while Guard has a better BS on pretty much every guy). OK, Guard comes out ahead on shooting.

But Orks can FIGHT in H2H and fight well. Orks can also spoiled for variety when it comes to vehicles (they get speed, transport, firepower, excellent armor, whatever you need).

Orks get Lootas - 48" shooting - and power weapons in the form of Ork Burna Boyz.

Really, there's something for everyone when it comes to Orks.

That plus you can get them in the starter set which contains the rules, dice, templates, and even an army for your friend to use (the Space Marines). Or sell them off and use the cash to buy MOAR ORKS!

All that said, in the end, get the army that you WANT to play. If you feel a kinship with the IG, that's the best one to play. But if you are truly on the fence, you couldn't go wrong choosing GREEN!

I think Solorg just stole my brain. That feels weird lol

Completely agree with Solorg. I always say go with what you like. Even if you suck at it, you still picked the one you liked. Read the fluff and background over at www.lexicanum.com See what pops out at you.
And yes Orks have a basic simple battle plan, but they really are more complex then just RUN RUN RUN and thats it. They are deffinetly an army people need to watch out for. They can cause ALOT of hurt in a short amount of time.
