British National Party leaders have voted "overwhelmingly" to ballot members on changing its constitution to allow non-white members to join.

Leader Nick Griffin said he welcomed the change, which the party had been "moving towards" for years.

If the new membership rules are approved, the BNP would be brought in line with the recent Equality Bill.

The party's "closed for business" talks in Hindley Green, Wigan, came on the first day of its annual conference.

Senior members discussed whether its policy should discriminate on the ground of race or religion. Members of the public and journalists were barred.

A party spokesman said: "More than 300 of the party's voting membership voted overwhelmingly in favour. At a later stage it will be put to the entire membership of the party to vote for, or against."

The Human Rights Commission has ruled that if the BNP does not allow people from ethnic minorities to join, it would become an illegal party.

Mr Griffin said: "We will ensure the new constitution still makes sure that the party is there primarily to represent the interests of the indigenous people of these islands who have been grotesquely discriminated against by the other parties now for decades.

"But to have members of loyal assimilated minorities in this country involved in the party as well I'm sure will actually help."

A group of about 50 anti-fascist protesters gathered outside the conference venue chanting "Black and white unite and fight", and "Smash the BNP".

Dozens of police officers were on patrol outside the complex and the surrounding roads.

Paul Jenkins, 40, from Cumbria, is the north-west organiser for Unite Against Fascism.

He said: "We are here because the BNP is a fascist party and it does not represent the people of Wigan, the North West or the country."

Mr Griffin, who was controversially invited on to BBC's Question Time last month, will bring the conference to a close on Sunday with a keynote speech.

Delegates will discuss 12 policy motions put forward by various regional party groups.

The BNP's membership has increased this year and two candidates were elected to the European Parliament.

Also note that Griffin was quoted as saying "We have changed under duress", which is a Politicians way of saying "We were an Illegal organisation and have been forced to change."

I wonder just how many non-whites will actually be admitted, as I am sure there are a million other reasons for them not to be admitted. Perhaps if we all band together and "join" the BNP so there are more non-whites than whites, we can stop these damn bigots.

Give it a few years and there probably will be more non-white members than whites; which will accurately reflect the population as a whole

There are certainly a large number of "non-whites" who I would consider to be native to the UK, and who may also be interested in a number of the BNP's policies. I think the thing with the BNP is that they do actually have some policies which reflect a lot of the anger and disatisfaction with mainstream parties and their policies, which can appeal to a wide range of people of all backgrounds (hence their recent popularity)

The problem comes, of course, when you look at their more... interesting views on, say, booting everyone out who doesn't come from a family that has lived here during the industrial revolution, etc, as well as their, as mentioned above, attitude towards non-white members, etc.

As it stands, I think they will always be too racist, generally aggressive, etc to break into the big leagues, and their popularity only comes from the frustration of the general population over issues that the main parties have done nothing about yet which many people feel are important, such as immigration, etc.

Once these issues are met (I hope) that they will fade back into the background.

Personally, I do believe in some of their views, primarily on controlling immigration and the flow of people into the country, although most of their beliefs I strongly disagree with. If they have now been forced to admit non-whites, they will persecute and harrass any non-white who actually joins. This new change of rules is useless because of this.

For the most part, votes garnered by the BNP are protest votes from those who wish the main Political Parties to sit up and take notice.

because no 1 has actualy heard of anything that the lib dems have done! they are basicly silent. at most there a footnote in an electral but on the news, usualy ignored.

and if people realy want to protest vote for indie reps, thatmakes more sence, they WILL fight for your area instead of keeping there "party" happy(mainly cos they dobt have one...).

So, who are the "indigenous" British people? The Normans? The Saxons? The Celts? Did any people spring fully formed from the British islands? Perhaps it's just my American perspective, being from a nation where everybody came from somewhere else. (Including the so-called "native Americans...") I can't believe that any organization in the western world, especially a political organization with such a high profile would still hold to such practices. Seriously, in 1,000 years, white people will be extinct.

..much like the rules of spelling and grammar it would seem. The Lib Dem party political conference was reported widely on the national news and all the mainstream media, true it wasn't front page news but the facts/stories are out there for people who pay attention.

i suppose i shouldnt find this slightly offencive but i cant help but take that personaly... i do try my hardest, i am just not at all any good with it! even if i read things over a few times i still miss quite alot. but if you knew what i ment then i dont see a problem with it, other than you stating it.

This is not at all appropriate.. and not helpfull whatsoever as spellcheckers are only basicly programed to pick up wrongly spelled words, not wrongly placed words like the above. and note, i do use a spellchecker, does't help all that much!

Look my spellink is indifferent at best but I've gotten better, I've had to.

And frankly after tackling Japanese, Chinese (well half-tackling Chinese) and now starting Korean I have less and less patience for people who don't develop the skill to write in their own native language.

We live in a primarily text based society, in which the elite can read and write properly. This has been true in most civilisations for thousands of years. Modern civilisation spread the benefits of literacy to an ever wider group.

If we don't write properly, people tend to ignore what we've got to say because it's too hard to understand, or even just assume we are idiots.

Fortunately, the magic of spell- and grammar-checking in word-processors enable us to avoid a lot of mistakes if we take the trouble.

I think that some of the MODs posting in this thread should probably refrain from making personal attacks if they want other users to respect their wishes regarding instructions to do the same.
There are many reasons that people have difficulty with spelling and grammar, and the fact that people are decrying 'bigots' whilst verbally attacking someone who has hinted at having a learning difficulty is symptomatic of the hypocrisy often displayed on this site. Having a learning difficulty doesn't mean you are unintelligent - I have one and my IQ is 139.

And you are just as bad. There is no excuse for poor spelling and grammar. I have a friend who is severely dyslexic but he still writes better than 99% of the interwebs. The whole "omg he might have a learning difficulty" routine is old and stale.

Not to mention that 99% of people with so called "learning difficulty" do not actually have one. Yes, some people do, I know some, they are great guys [Insert Boilerplate Disclaimer about how I am not an donkey-cave] but most people who claim to have them are just thick as pig gak and the nanny state has convinced them they are owed something.
