Nice progress all. Good to see a touch of realism being added to the pieces. Starting to look like places, rather than things.

Looking good everyone.
Been super busy so I have decided to make a U-turn on this project and attempt a smaller piece, maybe a diorama or something.
I will figure something else, keep up the good work.
P.s good luck judging this

hey mates...I want to show you the current status of the bridge... currently only bluetaced (thank you cam for these! ) I present the fully working bridge....still not fully riveted... but you get the idea...the counterweight by the way is filled to the brim with iron nails...the only one thing that puts on some weight intense enough and fits in a small container....well... next one will have lots of rivets to show....
the mechanism works by shifting the counterweight back inside the lifting arm...
also...@fargo: the warping effect is made only whilst punching the holes in the very thin material... it is simply not avoidable with this thin PC... when you use thicker stuff it doesn't warp that much to be seen...for this project it worked in my opinion... on other projects it might be a fail...one needs to be lucky^^
hope you like...
@ MT... that crackling effect is awesome.... ...
@ mordain...that sandwich is pure win.... pure win....
cheers, vik

More work on my piece. I added some rubble to my war-torn road.

That bridge looks amazing Viktor...I particularly like that it is functional, I can imagine a bunch of in game scenarios that would revolve around it.
the other day I put a bit more rubble down and painted on some rust and rain streaks on the pylons.
Now I'm getting into the smaller details, I made some rattle cans out of kitchen skewers and paper. I'm getting close to adding final touches.

have you tried watered down PVA (white) glue? it worked well for me. also went to the dollar store and bought an assortment of eye shadow, which i found did pretty well (if you put it on areas you don't touch) for "painting" on dust/dirt/weathering.
hello, everybody. i know it's been forever and a day. real world issues (55+ hours a week of work) always getting in the way...missed a few contests, and won't have time to participate in this one, but i am now back on the interwebs and will be keeping an eye on what everyone is doing.
pretty awesome work so far. keep it up!

You can use any kind of powder you want for weathering. All you need to do is seal it in with either a clear coat (matt varnish), hairspray, or (the best IMHO) Future Floor Wax

Ahoy all!
Some incredible work going on here!! (I dont know why i am surprised.... some very talented troops out there!!)
I have been busy "baking" this evening and got some groud cover on my entry..... Still bare bones....but i am definetly off and running!
Something good about this "mud / terrain" is that it can take a couple of days for it to dry properly so i have plenty of time to add details into the mud and actually build some walls and other details into it.
Cheers All,

Thanks for the hints and tips fella's, I ended up using watered down pva...It worked a treat.

Well unfortunately I'm still too busy for any progress at all. I'm afraid I won't be getting the trench run done for the competition. Plus trying to model 1/270th scale rivets is tough . Unless I get seriously inspired/unemployed then I will wear the badge of shame......do we have some sort of failed riveters challenge badge yet??? If so then I'm gonna start collecting those .

A friendly reminder that 3 weeks remain. No pressure, plenty of time still, even for you Theo.
In 1:270 scale, proper sized rivets would be little dots you made with a technical pen or rapido-graph ( y'know the kind, that make lines 0.15mm wide) and even then they would be huge. But larger rivets would look cooler, and so, are not only permitted, but desirable. Plus they hold things together better than mere adhesives. Nobody glues together aircraft fuselages eh? It's rivets or bust. Would you fly an airplane held together by glue? No.
I have to agree with Doc about the spray cans.

Well I'm officially out of this one. I figured a way to quickly build the trench, but very little scratch building to it. I'd post a picture, but dakka's got me blocked for some reason. I tried to upload some parade pictures from this weekend as well, lots of WWII vehicles in our parade, but it wasn't happening.

The trench is still happening, but it won't fit the competition as I'm now using Deadzone tiles to complete it. Here's a sample of what I'm talking about.
The end of the trench. I'm thinking the little circle in the center on the end wall can be the hole, looks like the size of a womprat
And my solution to flying over the trench. That way models down in the trench cannot be targeted by models outside the trench since they will have problems of their own, such as turrets and walls to look out for.
This is about 7"x9" I plan on making the sections 12" long and modular. It all depends on getting more of the sprues though. Which should be rectified shortly .

Sorry Vik, never meant to... Or maybe I did High praise, thanks!
@Grimdork: looks great, but that is a picture, right? 'cause I did build the interior detail of mine...
It's just one of those places that are bigger inside than they look from outside
On a more serious note, now: original pic was picked from the web (started with searching for underground complexes/facilities, this one is actually a service tunnel), edited to suite. Main constraint was to align the tracks width, after that, just cropping to size. Did work on the colours some too trying to get the printout to match the concrete floor, it looked better on screen but they are not that close now, I'll try to brush-blend them some to better merge the joint.
It is not a flat picture though: pipelines and front pillars (the first three on each side) were cut out from two additional copies of the same photo and applied on top, with cardboard separators in-between each layer, for added depth (as in French art or 3D painting/collage).
Glad you find it effective!

Yeah your paper-fu is definitely stronger than my own, adding that extra bit of 3D really sells it and makes it harder to tell it's a photo printed out in the first place.
I'll have to get photoshop or the gimp for the next time I try something similar, and blending it in with a brush does sound like a thing to try.
