It was simply amazing tbh. One of the best movies ive seen, the fact they used rl acting and cgi together like that shows how far technology has advanced, because it seemed like it was all real. But yes, it did remind me of the imperium trying to take a planet lol

Take your pick. This is the exact reason why GW can shut thier hole when it comes to crybaby antics about "Thier" IP.
It is no secret that they use stuff from any and all parts of popular media that can easily fit the mold of fighting a war against insurmentable odds.
As for the movie? The technology is amazing, the movie looks neat. Bang Bang, pew pew noises along for the fun the movie is a winner. Can't wait for the DVD.

Nuff said.
I loved this movie. Awesome graphics, beautiful scenery, lots of blue boobs, lots of guns.
This is Marines vs Kroot.
Again - I loved this move. 3hrs is long for any movie, but this was really not to bad. Nano/bio technology, genetic engineering to the extreme, love making with hair ( I want a pony tail too ). Good stuff.
Only complaint I have is I'm pretty tired for feeling I have to apologize for being a white male of European descent.
I'll take the Avatar.

I heard Sigourney's avatar was actually pretty well done.
The only thing I really don't like about the movie is that it's basically just a sci-fi retelling of Dances With Wolves. I haven't actually seen it yet (I plan to soon), but I've heard as much and I've already lost a lot of interest in it. It's been done before and from what I've been told, it isn't even told in a new or interesting way. This movie pretty much has no story or plot to go with it, it's all about the effects, and while I hear it's a beautiful thing to behold...is it really worth it?
I'm sure I'll enjoy it all the same, and it sure as hell looks a lot better than some of the other crap that came out this year (like Transformers 2), but it certainly isn't the masterpiece that it was being heralded as. A leap in technology perhaps, but it takes more than really good CGI to make a movie.
And there's the whole white guilt thing, too. How many more times am I going to be lectured by Hollywood because white people that lived hundreds of years before me were bastards? What am I supposed to do about that?

@Sidstyler - See it first, mate. It is awesome. I brought this up on another thread, but I might as well say it here too: Star Wars is basically just a western in space. LOTR is just another 'quest movie'. Nothing is really that 'original' when it comes to storytelling - it's 3 hours long and doesn't feel it at all. And the whole 'white guilt' thing (not just aimed at you) is a crock of gak - it's a film about an alien planet being exploited by humans. You can see it as an analogue for 'white guilt' if you like, but since when is that a bad thing? The rape and murder of native populations in the name of commerce is not something to be swept under the carpet - should we forget about the Holocaust too? I'm willing to bet THAT wasn't within living memory for anyone on this forum either.

BAHAHAHAHA
The humans actually reminded me of colonial marines... y'know green helicoptery ships, humans in jungle camo and robot suits... oh wait, maybe it was halo! y'know green helicoptery ships, humans in jungle camo and robot suits... oh wait, maybe it was starship troopers, y'know green helicoptery ships, humans in jungle camo and robot suits...
Honestly, if all you could think of was imperial guard and kroot, you are missing out on a whole smack of awesome sci-fi and non-sci-fi flicks, shows, books etc.
Now, to the Nay-sayers on the 'fake' cg... I work in the industry... trust me when i tell those of you that havent seen it that the CG is really ground breaking and it is a truly beautiful movie to take in... yes, some things are still obviously cg, but the great thing is, about 90% of what you see on screen is UNobviously [i] cg. So much more than what you think was computer generated, and it's the attention to detail, physics and animation that really set a new standard.
The story was a bit predictable i found, but it was non the less an extremely enjoyable experience. It's dances with wolves in space, yes, but hey, space has rarely been so thourougly realized!

I know what you are saying. Sometimes when the "white guilt" angle is played it can ruin what was otherwise a great movie.
What is crazy about the whole concept of "white guilt" is that it gets overtold simply because at how successful Europeans were at building empires. So history is full of stories of europeans imposing their will on others. The reality of history shows that pretty much all societies functioned in much the same as as western societies when it comes to competing for resources with their neighbors. I challenge anyone to find a society in history that did not force it's will upon another society.

Watched the movie today. AWESOMENESS OF AWESOME +3 OF AWESOMENESS... which is also awesome ;p
However... i think i was watching what would happen if the tau sent commander farsight to have a civil war with the kroot.
COME ON! think about it!
Tau - strong airforce, robotic suits, strong ranged firepower.
Kroot - Primitives, Agile, stronger and bigger than tau, beasts of war (kroot hounds, krootox)
Of course... i also believe that duke nukem was leading the human army... perhaps i'm going crazy...

I never really bought into that whole 3D thing. The movie should be able to draw me in on its own, without relying on cheap gimmicks to be enjoyable.
That and I don't even think I can see it in 3D around here, the nearest IMAX theater is likely farther away than I'm willing to go for this movie.

This and they don't usually write stories about the conquered.

Actually, the 3D is this movie is never, ever used as a gimmick. All it does is add depth and peripheral to what is overwise two dimentional. In one scene there was soot flooting through the scene, and I actually caught myself trying to brush it off my glasses. The story may have been told a hundred times before, but it does it really well. In short, I agree with Movie Bob's review 100%. ( http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escape-to-the-movies/1333-Avatar) Oh, and on topic, you can draw a comparison with anything Sci-fi to Warhammer 40k. They are both Sci-fi, so there will be common themes and devices. It is just irrelevant.

3D looks really really ugly. The more realistic it gets, the closer it gets to uncanny valley.
I prefer cartoons / 2D a lot more, they work with the limitations and are stylised, and much more expressive than 3D animation. On the other side, puppet work has to be done stylised (on non-human).
I do like one 3D animation though, and that's ReBoot, because the 3D made total sense for the world it was showing.

See, now thats the worrying thing. When people go out and experience something Sci-Fi and immediately think that someone has ripped of GW WH40K.....the ignorance is truely amazing.
Seriously, do yourself a favour, read some of the classics, like Dune for example....once you start reading the core material that GW stole to create WH40K, you will not bother to read anymore GW rubbish, and you certainly won't think that every Sci-Fi setting has based itself on something as ridiculous as GW products.....if I were going to start my own Sci Fi setting GW would be the last place to look......I'd be surprised if it even crossed the minds of those who created Avatar to even consider WH40K.....the thought alone makes me laugh.
