Cheers, guys! Glad to hear you like the Iron Warriors! There'll be more. Not many, mind you, but enough to make a nice Killteam

It's time for another update today, to show you what I have been working on lately. While at a conference in Hamburg last week, I was able to swing by the local GW store and pick up a little something...

So far, however, I have only been working on some smaller tests with the new plastic parts from the box. Such as this 30k World Eater wielding an autocannon:

Of course there's always the temptation with these models to just go completely chaotic on them, adding spikes and trophies to every surface, but I am trying to deliberately keep them away from full-on 40k baroqueness, in order to show that the worship of chaos is only just beginning to creep in here and there, but the 30k World Eaters are still different from their 40k incarnation. With that in mind, I just made some small tweaks to the model. I think the Anvilus backpack has a nice way of making the model look even more archaic, plus it also provides an element of improvisation to the armour, which I think is a great fit for World Eaters: Given their style of warfare, I think the legion should really be rife with mix'n'match armour that has been patched together from everything that could be scavenged off the battlefield.

Here's my first tactical veteran squad, slowly taking shape:

The leftover Mk III backpack was used on this guy here:

A World Eaters praetor, based on an Ivanus Enkomi body fellow hobbyist Augustus b'Raass sent me a while ago. I realise I must have shown the model to you several times, but now I am finally happy with the setup: The new backpack provides precisely the dash of Heresy-era tech the model was still missing

This guy will be one of Lorimar's Secutorii, a cadre of officers serving as a link between the Captain and the individual squad leaders:

And finally, there's this guy: Chaplain Karrim Krieger, originally converted using the Chaplain from the Betrayal at Calth boxed set:

I replaced the Mk IV legs I had originally used with a pair of Mk III legs, and I do think this change really adds to the model's grim presence.

As always, let me know what you think!

You really make it hard to stay a loyalist.

So many cool conversion opportunities with chaos.

Now if you’ll excuse me, the chaplain is calling again.

The Burning of Prospero set is such a fun lil box got it for my Word Bearers to give them a MK3 Veteran Squad and Tartaros Terminator Squad...

Its really cool and great value for money.

The Plog is cool as always.

Are the 30k World Eaters going to be a "Thing" if so I am eager to see how they go.

Keep up the work...

Damn. Chaos always calls to me, especially with awesome conversions such as these.

I'm curious as to the parts you used...

Where did the praetor's sword come from? Also, I assume that the autocannon barrel came from like an ork shoota or big shooter, but is the main chassis (the bolter/back bit) from calth/prospero? Most of the underslung autocannons I've seen are only from forgeworld.

I'm 99% certain that it came from the Raptor/Warp Talon set.

Wow, a very productive trip! I've been meaning to pick up the box, very convienent parts-wise.
In other news, those IW characters look suitably nasty. Terribly exited to see them striped and finished!

Thanks a lot, guys! I really appreciate it!

@ kakita: King Pariah is 100% correct about the sword -- in fact, the whole arm came from the CSM Raptors. The autocannon barrel is indeed from an orc shoots (actually from the bike kit, IIRC). The body of the gun is just the stock heavy bolter that comes with the Mk. III kit.

So anyway, my experiments with the new kit continue apace, and I've built two more marines for my first tactical veteran squad.

For the first guy, I mainly stuck with the new Mk. III parts, but swapped-in a CSM torso piece:

The one serious shortcoming of the new models is that, once again, we have to make do without dedicated CC weapon arms (the few that come with the squad’s sergeant notwithstanding), so I texperimented with getting around that limitation. My impression is that the Mk. III Marines are both harder and easier to turn into models armed with CC weapons than their Mk. IV brethren. Harder because it’s not as easy to just swap in alternate plastic arms — due to the bulk of the armour, you’ll lose the iconic Mk. III look. On the other hand, the segmented armour plates make it quite a bit easier to carefully cut the arms apart and repose them (like I did with a pair of bolter arms on the guy above).

And finally, I went a little more adventurous and built this guy:

As you can see, he is wearing far more hybridised armour than his predecessors, which once again ties back to the kind of mongrel armour I’d imagine most of the World Eaters to be wearing partway through the heresy. Now I realise that many World Eaters players feel that those old berzerker arms are the bane of our existence, but the clunky look just really suits the whole Heresy-era World Eaters look and feel for me. It’s not an effect I’ll be using on every other model, but I do think this guy really reads as a World Eater.

All in all, I am pretty happy with my Mk. III experiments so far, yet I also think that there is still much fun to be had with the new parts!

So here's another look at squad Bardolf taking shape:

So that means one model left to go for the squad, and the vexillarius, no less — I am still debating with myself over whether to go with the fairly low key, backpack-mounted vexilla that comes with the kit or go for a slightly more involved banner. The latter seems like a better fit for the World Eaters, but I am also planning a dedicated company standard bearer for the future, and I don’t want the squad vexillarii to overshadow that guy. Then again, I grew up with 2nd edition 40k where the guy with the banner mounted on his backpack was always the sergeant. Argh, choices…

As always, let me know what you think!

And another small update: After a longer period of laziness and/or distraction, I have finally managed to start painting the third model for my Call of Chaos vow, my gladiatorial Khornate Daemon Prince. I only have some pretty bad photos to show for it, for now, as the light was already very poor by the time I came home from work. But here's proof that I am still in the game, at least:

Still a ton of detail work left to do on this guy, but I am getting there.

Love the brass armour. What do you think of that nilihak oxide (that blue technical paint) for brass? I was thinking it could be effective if used sparingly on brass armour.

Great mini.

Thanks a lot, guys!

@ WarbossDakka: While I agree about Nihilakh Oxide being a handy tool for the creation of a verdigris effect, I won't be using it here, mainly for two reasons: One, my entire Khornate force uses a very limited palette, and I don't really want to muddy the waters, so to speak, by introducing another colour and/or effect to the formula. The other reason is that the daemon is created from the raw stuff of the warp itself, so any kind of real world corrosion would seem slightly strange to me -- unless it's a Daemon Prince of Nurgle, of course, where the opposite would be true: I suppose those guys are created rusty and corroded

Anyway, I kinda missed the perfect moment for photography again today, but these new pictures should give you an idea of the highligted silver on the weapons:

So that only leaves the base to be finished -- but I am actually considering leaving that for later and getting a good start on the next model for my Call of Chaos vow first, because the bases can always be completed as a last step before the deadline runs out

Lookin' pretty good there KS! Whilst I agree on the corrosion matter, would the daemon's armor be cleaned after his out of warp rampage, or just keep it as is?

Hmm, I realise this goes rather deeply into headcanon territory, but anyway:

My mental image is that daemons are made from warp energies, so they can basicallyclean or repair any part of their gear (or body, for that matter) at will -- unless, of course, the damage/wound has been caused by weaponry that is especially harmful to daemons (GK swords and/or guns, for instance?!). So we are not really talking about "cleaning" in the common way here, but rather about the daemon sparing the energy to keep his appearance pristine or battle-scarred -- and I rather suspect the choice actually comes down to the daemon's personal preference.

Once again, it feels like Nurglite Daemons should be slightly different in that the malignancy of their afflictions is either so great as to counter their daemonic "healing factor" or they simply like to be corroded, diseased, decayed or whatever.

But these theories are hardly foolproof, of course: Why should a daemon's weapons and armour have nails, screws or clasps, for instance, if they are fashioned from warp energies? Maybe as an unconscious reminiscence to the daemon's mortal life?

I think not even GW's designers are perfectly sure about these matters, though, or they just tend to go with what looks cool

I completely agree. I wouldn't think it would look right anyway, since it's basically a blue paint. I would think that would clash with the reds.

Very nice completed model! I prefer to do lots of bases at once. Set aside a day purely for basing and weathering, and then they're out the way for the next model you want to paint!

Great work on those MKIII marines, your 30k force is growing in size. Let us know when it will be he proper time to call it an army
Although tbh the forward leaning guy looks ridiculously like a dwarf on the first pic (the problems of bad perspective)

@whiskeytango if i'm not mistaken that skull in a halo comes from the banner of the captain in the Assault on Black Reach starter box (or Battle of Vedros, as it's the same guy)

Thanks a lot, guys! It's been a while since the last update, but today I have something new to share with you -- we'll be getting to that in a minute.

@ whiskeytango: That bit came from the Space Marine Centurions. Legio Ultra is correct, however, in that the banner top on the Black Reach Sergeant features the same design.

So anyway, I've been struggling for quite a while now to finish the models for my vow for the Call of Chaos event over at The Bolter & Chainsword. For the longest time, it seemed like I would have to consider the whole endeavour a lost cause, but then a last minute pep-talk from fellow hobbyist Augustus b'Raass brought me back on track. I basically put in every waking hour of leisure time I had yesterday and completed the last models for my vow -- and not too soon, either, because I won't have any time to paint before Saturday! By the same token, I can only offer you some pretty horrible pictures -- taken last night on the very top of my desk, just after I had finished the last model, as it were. Don't worry, though, there'll be better pictures this weekend!

But now, without further ado:

First up, another picture of my Daemon Prince:

Poor guy still needs a proper base, but I am calling him finished for now.

Then there's my completed model representing Iskandar Khayon from the novel "The Talon of Horus":

And, finally, a Khornate Lord that was very kindly provided by BrotherJim earlier this year. Unfortunately, the fuzzy photo eats up all the variances in the red, but it'll have to suffice for now:

Those of you following my thread might notice that I've swapped in another head, feeling that the model ultimately works better with a bare head -- but I'll probably be going back and forth on that for a dozen time before finally settling on a solution. For now, though, this guy is finished as well!

And here's the entire happy family:

And that's another Call of Chaos done and dusted! Like I said, you can expect better photos this weekend

@ Nevelon: Haha, cheers, mate! The different "colours of chaos" seem to be complementing each other rather beautifully, wouldn't you agree?

Meanwhile, I was able to take some much better pictures of the whole ensemble, and I would of course like to share them with you. So here's my entire vow for this year's all of Chaos event, once again, in slightly less fuzzy quality:

So let's look at all of the models again. First up, there was the giant flesh hound of Khorne (I still cannot stop to think of him as "Fido" in the back of my head, although "Keeper of the Osseous Gate" sounds far more appropriate):

Apothecary Phastos of the Iron Warriors was finished next (and also doubled as my contribution for a concurrent IW-centered event):

Then there's my gladiatorial Daemon Prince of Khorne:

I already have a pretty cool idea for his base worked out, and I am confident I'll be able to finish it during the Christmas holiday!

Then there's my version of Iskandar Khayon, one of my favourite parts of my vow:

Now he's not quite as electric blue in real life, but that colour I used for his armour just has a way of catching the light In any case, he is noticeably lighter than the first Thousand Sons sorcerer I built and painted a couple of years ago:

As you can see, I used the same approach with the gnarled roots for both models's bases: I wanted something subtly twisted and creepy, and I think the roots fit the bill without looking over the top.

Oh, and since Iskandar is the protagonist of Aaron Dembski-Bowden's "The Talon of Horus", I thought it would be fun to take another picture of him next to his buddy (and eventual fellow Black Legionary and member of the Ezekarion) Lheorvine Ukris:

And finally, there's the lovely converted Khornate Lord BrotherJim sent me earlier this year:

It's a fantastic model, to be sure. But the fact that the massive backpack (a hallmark of BrotherJim's style) had been permanently attached to the model's back made the whole ensemble rather frustrating to paint:

Speaking of the backpack, the Terminator facemask fused to it was painted in BL colours, as a little shout out to BrotherJim's own Black Legion army.

So that's it for this year's Call of Chaos -- and for all the painting events on this board, for that matter: I joined three events this year and managed to complete my vow for each of them which does feel pretty good, admittedly

As always, let me know what you think!

I love the "electric blue" personally. Gives it an elemental feel if you know what I mean.

My favourite is the Iron Warrior though. The hazard stripes along with the muted colours which are seperated by bright buttons is very effective.
