Been a while since I checked up on this thread, and my have you been busy! I love those new Thousand Sons models, and you've done very well on them! They make a nice contrast to all the red Khorne-themed stuff. I'm sure you agree with me that it's nice to shift gears once in a while and paint something different!

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Cheers, guys!

@ WarbossDakka: Haha, yeah, I think I've earned some rest Then again, I just found out today that The Bolter & Chainsword will be hosting a Heresy-related event in January, and I do have those unpainted 30k World Eaters, so I suppose it's right back down the rabbit hole for me

@ ZergSmasher: In hindsight, 2016 has been an exceptionally red year for me, so yeah: It was good to paint something different, such as the Iron Warrior or Khayon -- that's probably why he ended up so bright blue, though: I must have been overcompensating for all that red...

So here's another small update for today: I've mad a tweak to one of the models from my Call of Chaos vow -- and no, I am not talking about the Daemon Prince's base

I realised that the new head on the model I received from BrotherJim still didn't quite click with me, so I had another dig through the bitzbox. No the thing is that BrotherJim's model has a very iconic, archetypal quality -- like it's just one step away from this guy here:

And so I realised that a head from the same vintage era was probably the way to go.

So here's what I came up with:

For those who cannot place the head, it's actually a head from the ancient mono-pose plastic Khorne Berzerkers that were released in the early-to-mid 90s, even before the multipart plastic kit everybody loves to hate these days While the models haven't aged all that gracefully, that facemask is one of my favourite designs ever, and I would love for GW to go back to that design (or at least include a modernised version), should they ever update the plastic berzerkers. Biohazard was kind enough to send me some of those old berzerkers a couple of years ago, and now I've finally found the perfect model to use one of the heads on

And I have to say that I am much happier with the model now: It's as inconically XII legion now as it should be -- plus it also looks cool from nearly every angle

As always, let me know what you think!

If you are going old school on the helmet, you should base with flock and goblin green.

Just say’n...

Thanks a lot, guys! Really happy to hear you like the new (old) helmet, because I think it has really transformed the model!

@ Nevelon: True story: I still own a vintage Dark Eldar army that is entirely based on green flock, with the base rims painted in Goblin Green like it's 1998 -- which, in all fairness, it was

In other news, I posted a rather comprehensive recap of my hobby year over on the blog, and I thought you guys might appreciate seeing some of the photos I used to illustrate the post:

So here's a look at my entire 2016 output, including the non-chaotic models:

(the two biggest models I painted in 2016 are actually missing from the picture, but we'll be getting to them in a second)

Anyway, as the picture shows, 2016 has very much been a chaos year for me -- mostly thanks to the hugely motivational community events over at The Bolter & Chainsword, to be honest.

Here's the chaotic part of the above collection:

And the Khornate models -- including the biggest completions of 2016: my Bloodthirster, Ghor'lash'Kharganath and my interpretation of Angron in his Daemon-Primarch form:

It also occurs to me in hindsight that the bigger part of those models may or may not end up as a dedicated Chaos Daemons detachment -- just sayin'...

By the same token, monstrous daemons make up a sizeable part of my 2016 output – but come, on: Given the current state of the world, can you blame me for feeling the subconscious need to keep painting red-skinned devils...?

A momemt of silence please for the brave marines who sacrificed their lives as baseing matirial. Their noble deaths serving to add intrest and color accents to the forces of chaos.

Hey everyone, here's a new update for you at long last: I've had a somewhat rocky start into my hobby year, with very little hobby mojo and other hobbies seriously cutting into my painting and building time. But this past weekend, I've decided to end this vicious circle and to finally make some progress on my first model for the currently running "Loyalty and Treachery" event. So here's a photo from last night, showing you a fuzzy glimpse of my 30k World Eaters Contemptor:

The photo shows the model at a very early stage, with basically just the main colours blocked out and before decals, glazes, sponge weathering and blood. After this point, I spent the next two hours carefully applying all the decals I wanted on the Contemptor, which was quite an ordeal but should be worth it.

Here's a look at the model, tacked together and with all of the decals where they need to be:

The Contemptor's still squeaky-clean at this point, and I actually almost feel bad for having to break out the dirt and grime...

As always, let me know what you think!

Interesting choice of green as accent color.. I thought blue was the normal color? Am I confused? is it the pic off color wise?
The belly plate from the Fantasy Ogre line?

Cheers, for the feedback, guys!

@ Nevelon: Aw, that's nice of you to say! Tell you what, I'll be adding another mangled Ultramarine on the base, just for you

@ Solar_lion: Oh, that's not green at all (as you'll be seeing in a minute), but rather blue with the slightest hint of turquoise. And yes, that s an Ogre belly plate -- basically the perfect plastic rendition of the World Eaters' legion badge

@evildrcheese: Cheers, mate!

@ JustaerinAtTheWall: Haha, dirt and grime, coming right up!

Now I have to say that the Contemptor has turned out to be just as much fun to paint as I had hoped -- a really great model to break through the hobby fatigue!

So here he is, with glaze on and the first round of sponge weathering in place:

Unfortunately, the lighting conditions eat up some of the finer nuances, but these were the best photos I could take in the short window of opportunity before heading off to work. Here's a closer look at the head, showing you the glowing red visor:

The next step will be to carefully apply some weathering to the blue parts of the armour as well as the reactor section on the Contemptor's back. And then, of course, there will be blood I have to say I am already pretty happy with the model, though!

Here he is, next to his squishier brothers:

Thanks a lot, guys!

So here's one last update before the model is finished. First up, the Contemptor, now with added weathering on the reactor area and the blue parts of the chassis:

Another change you might notice is the inclusion of a big "IV" decal on the model's chest plate: Now the original plan was to have one of the red XII decals from the World Eaters decal sheet there, but that didn't work out at all, as the red decal didn't really read against the brass background. So I decided on a white numeral that stands for the Contemptor's affiliation with the 4th assault company -- I suppose there are enough XII decals scattered across the model to make it obvious which legion this guy belongs to

Now if the Contemptor seems to be missing his base, that's because I spent the small slots of hobby time available to me yesterday and today finishing the general construction of the base...

...and painting it right away:

Now all that's left is to decide whether (and where) to add spots of blood to the Contemptor -- as always, I don't want to go overboard with this particular effect, so if you have any suggestions for areas where blood should be present, I'd love to hear them.

In any case, I think you can expect the finished model tomorrow. Until then, please let me know what you think!

Hah! Another base claimed for the XIIIth!

I’m not seeing a lot of visible damage on the Ultra. Probably death due to blunt force trauma. Stepped on? That or he was torn in half, and then stepped on. But he’s got that ground in look.

I might bloody the claw a bit, splash some on the lower legs. Those marines can squirt a little as their armor seals fail when you put the boot down.

And don’t forget to loge a meltabomb in the hip joint. Ultras have a habit of sticking them there before getting killed.
