Toxic does indeed need a stompa

My meks and I collaborated about what a stompa needs to be. Big, stompy, killy, shooty and of course . . . dead 'ard.

I think this is a good starting point for said criteria (mek-teria ?)

I honestly have no idea how im going to go about putting this beast together. The idea is to get the basic body shape and legs done and then work from there. I predict lots of cardboard, card, foamboard and plastic tubing and bits. Ive got a land raider that never made it to ebay so might put that to use.

Shall hope to get basic structure of it done at the start of this week. As a question to the dakkites is this. How tall is a stompa meant to be exactly? I picture it about 10" high or so. Is that too tall, or too short. I want it to be roughly the same height of the plastic stompa kit so I can maybe buy weapons and bits from that kit to use on this.

See you at the other side

I'm not sure how tall a Stompa is exactly but 10"-ish sounds right to me.

Good luck on the Stompa then, the feet make it extra stompy.

if I were building a stompa to your plans I'd start by making a frame, probably from bits of sprue glued together with a hot glue gun.
Then I'd stick bits of plasticard on top, working in layers and add some rivets and stuff.

I only use cardboard for the basic structure. Ive got this backing card that I was going to glue over the top to give a better painting surface and to help simulate armour sheeting. Going to watch a bit of Skins then get a body for him.

The beast has form. Only a quick (several hours when watching Skins at the same time) I got the body and then decided that he needed a head to go along with him. The picture has some extra graphical add-ons to help visualise where ill be going next. Comments and critics pleases and thankee

Sorry for the lack of post yesterday, got doing other things.

Worked on the body today. As you can see there be eyes on him so the head is more or less done. I plan on adding big tusks but ive yet to decide how to make them, thinking Das Clay or milliput or something. Im also going to add a pintle big shoota and a pintle rokkit launcha, both lovingly -cough- rendered on the picture. Over the weekend I plan on getting some plastic tubing to make a start on legs and arms.

Just worried about making it too tall, or ending up having really short legs and a huge torso. Although the might give it a sort of hunched ape look. We'll see what happens when the pipe comes along

Evening all. S'been a loooong weekend including much drinking and much tiredness. Spent most of yesterday hungover. Anyway back to the task

I picked up the tubing for the legs and arms tonight from work so they will get shape this coming week. Started off with my ever so helpful -cough- blueprints.

That scale is in inches btw

The plan is to use a section of dowel through the middle of it all as a base to work off and "thread the leg sections over the dowel. Gives me something stable to use to work off and any help is better than non. By dread feet I mean the chaos/ork dread style . . . with a single ankle joint and four "toes".
Im not too sure about how im going to make a realistic looking knee joint. I have a rough idea but im not sure how I'd go about doing that. Maybe several pieces of thick cardboard to make a middle wheel and then have some pistons going on around it. If you can think of a better idea that might be easier or look better please say so.

Blitza da warboy wrote: think you can put a size comparison? right now it looks like an even bigger than normal stompa!

You ask, I give

I have a feeling its going to turn out like an ork titan and possibly dwarfing the GW stompa kit by a few inches. 10" might have been optimistic but this is ok. I can give it bigger weapons, more weapons and turn it into a REAL ork vision of WAAAAGH!

For the knee joints, you could do big gears, like on the defilers claw joint. Then add little details like pistons etc around the joint to make it more orky??

I have no idea how big the actual stompa kit is, I just guessed that this would be a reasonable size. Id rather have an ork war machine this size than whatever size the stompa sounds

We have legs on him. However as you can see they are much thinner than I had anticipated and dont lool like they are going to support the body at all. So from here i'm going to first bulk out the leg sections by simply wrapping them in carboard and then covering in sections of card to simulate the armour plating.

Im going to look at "liberating" some small plant pots from work to base the feet around, putting braces inside the pots to make the feet more rigid. Not much work done tonight really unfortunatly, too many people bothering me about valentines day on sunday >.< doesnt want

I really like how my stompa/gargant is coming together and its going to be a great piece for my collection. Im not going for a game legal piece, more of a tribute to ork-dom. Let me know where im going wrong and right

I think its just a really big Stompa or a looted bipedal weapons platform. IMO, for it to be a gargant it'll need a fortress splattering belly gun. That might not be such a good idea considering the squatness of the model.

Hey guys n gals (cant be sexist)

I really do apologise for the length of time since my last post. Ill be honest and say I havnt really been working on it but I spent a fair chunk of time on it tonight and hopefully it shows.
The legs have taken shape quite alot. Ive bulked out the bottom part of the leg by simply wrapping carboard around the tubes, which will then get some regular card to form the armour plating and rivets etc. The yellow bits you can see around the top half of the leg is the start of the piston mechanism. I havnt got anything to use as the smaller tube but im sure something will come along.
I may leave it at the two and have it (speaking if it were real) spin on a wheel in the center and use the two pistons to lift and lower the bottom section OR have four bits of piston and have a simple rod/ball joint in the middle. I sort of prefer the ball join but the thing would be finding something ball shaped to fit the hole.
What else to mention . . .
FEET ! ATM the bottom half of the leg is a simple tube with a plastic shotglass as the actual foot, this is the stand-in . . . . a haa I just noticed what I did there. The actual foot is going to be wider and have two front toes and one back toe, similar to the imperial titan look.

person person wrote:IMO, for it to be a gargant it'll need a fortress splattering belly gun.

I realised after sticking the hip to the body that I could quite easily the deff cannon inbetween the legs. Epic stompas had the crotch cannon so it wouldnt be a major change. But the hip joint is now super glued to the body, and the top half of the legs to the hips . . . so cant really do much now. The plan will be to just have an armoured plate with maybe a big ork glyph of some kind.

Weapons are still bieng thought up. The gun arm SHOULD be fairly easy to make. A length of tube with other tube lengths stuck to it and possibly some bought cannons from bitz shops. The CCW is a different issue. I would LOVE a big chainsword but I am worried that the balance of the model will be skewed to wobbling point. I'll make a chainsword and try it out, if not i'll go with plan #2 . . . a big f**k-off circular saw.

Here come the pics. If ive not mentioned anything please ask and ill try and answer. Thanks for the C&C so far despite there not bieng much progress. I was browsing a dreadnought costume project and the OP decided to not show WIP shots til it was finished due to comments from users complaining or something. Im kind of expecting one of them to notice me and start saying stuff to me

Size comparison. Hopefully help you get a jist of how big we're talking

The leg I worked on today. Can see the piston joint here
