Do you know what is the bet way to write a list?

So you remember everything in your army in a game

And do everything you need to do

Obviously I don't and thats why I m asking

Any ideas?

Well, I use a note pad (a huge one).

It is used for pt calculations, it includes the point costs and purchased equipment for my entire army.
It's very messy, stained with cake frosting, and potato salad, with numbers and addition equations scrawled every where.
I've memorized the stats and pt costs for almost every unit in my army.
It really helps when you don't need to refer to your codex every player turn.

Alternatively, I used to type up ALL of my army's stats on a Microsoft word document using tables.
Its really simple, just time consuming, and I'm too lazy to do it.
But it makes a nice tidy list that is easy to refer to.

Well, in general I start out with figuring out what I'm going to be up against. If I'm going against a non-mech list, I'm not going to be shoving my list full of anti-tank, so the first part is elimination. The second part is figuring out priorities, such as what you know works, and what matches your style of play (and ultimately what will help you reach that goal.) If you're anticipating an objectives game, for example, you may want to take more troops, etc. The last step tends to be balancing your list and optimizing, finding useful, cheap redundancy and units that fill in missing pieces.

It's worked well for me so far.

Use Excel when you type it up. You can just have an entire collumn of cells add themselves together, that way you just type in the points and it figures out and displays the total in the cell you tell it to.

I write all my lists by hand though. I always have a draft one showing all the points for everything and it's usually covered by lots of calculations. Then I neatly write out the proper copy that I take with me.

For normal games, I usually just throw together point costs in my head and keep a calculator on hand, jotting things down in my notebook as I do. For Vassal games, however, I use the really nifty army roster made by a website that automatically totals up all the points and is designed to have everything you need to put down information for your armies. It's really cool, and it now takes me about 10-20 minutes to throw together a list (That I don't know the army well for, mind you) rather than the 30-40 it usually takes if I have to write it all down.

I just jot down any applicable special rules on the army roster. If I forget what they do mid-game, well, the codex is nearby

I plot all the figures and points costs onto an excel sheet and use formula's to keep a tally of the costs. I chop and change it until I'm happy then I print it out as it fits nicely onto a A4 landscape sheet of paper.

Very handy

I just use a pad of paper, and write all of my troops/upgrades, along with their point costs next to them. Usually very messy.

Armour type? And this is the wrong section for that. This thread has nothing to do with that.

Not sure if anyone posted about it. But in the GW site, there is a Spread sheet type page you can DL and print. It has everything you would need to create a list (minus the calculator and pen) very nice looking page. Hope it's helpful.

I absolutely agree with the Excel method of list creation. It allows me to have the full stat blocks for my units plus all of the special rules and upgrades printed out and nicely formatted. The process can be a little time consuming, but I've gotten around that problem by keeping a separate Excel workbook for a reference. Every time I use a specific unit, I copy it into the bit old reference sheet and then the next time I use them I can just copy/paste and make any necessary gear changes rather than having to type everything out again.

I'm just talkin' about Megaweapon.

If you can find units or even armies that work for you and stick to them you'll soon stop making the same mistakes. If you forget a squad has furious charge and it costs you an objective you're much more likely to remember next time.

Use Army Builder, it's awesome, it's got a point and click desktop interface. Then it organizes and seperates your army and has a "Don't Forget" section at the bottom of every page. A 1500 point army will be 4-6 sheets depending on if your army is troop heavy

Army builder is cool, it just pisses me off that it is 55 bucks and then you have to pay for updates, its a giant kick in the dick for cost.

This is good.... isn't it?

True, true. You can use the demo version for free and just build your army 500 pts at a time though. It's a little out of the way, but what free way isn't?

Personally, I find excel is the way to go.

Everything fits on one page and is easy to change.
Choices like HQ, ELITES, TROOPS, etc. go across the top from left to right.
Then I have 6 "rows" made up of 6 rows each. This lets you list out your model and all the options associated with it. This way you can add in a bosspole or take it out and it makes the point change for you.

I like letting the computer do all the heavy lifting for basic arithmetic.

What is nice about this is that you can tweak things to make minor adjustments very quickly.
I even have a small table at the bottom telling me how many models this army requires, how many I personally have on hand, and a difference. So, it lets me know if I ever run short (not that I don't know that intuitively). Mainly, I use this function to give me a snapshot of how many boyz would be on the board.

Just set your margins so it all fits on one page and you're done.

The downside I am noticing is that it does not list out all the special abilities of each unit. But, personally, once the models are out, I never go back and reference my list again. So, I don't know if that would help me.

Question: Although it cannot be posted, if someone were to PM me, would it be "GW Legal" to email the spreadsheet?

Orks are one of... ok, maybe the ONLY army (besides space marines) that doesn't need to remember an F load of special rules! so Ork and SM players shouldn't post on this, honestly, I believe they are a league of their own when it comes to army list making. This is coming from a 7 year SM Veteran and a 4year IG Veteran. I'm sure there are much more experienced players out there, this is just my opinion.

I use a notepad document and the calculator program, or an actual notepad and calculator when I'm not at my computer. My army lists look like this:

Sorcerer, MoT, Warptime, Doombolt, 165
Greater Daemon, 100
5 Possessed Marines, Icon of Nurgle, Champion, Rhino, 225
5 Plague Marines, 2 Meltaguns, Champion, Rhino, 185
5 Noise Marines, 5 Sonic Blasters, Rhino with Havoc Launcher, 175
2 Obliterators, 150
1000

Total squad number, name, upgrades, transport, transport's upgrades, points cost.
It keeps things legible, and shows all the items you have purchased. You should have stuff that comes base memorized (bolter, frag and krak, rules like Repair or Holo-field, etc.).
