If you have an IG platoon (that contains say: 1 platoon command squad, 4 squads of Guardsmen and 2 heavy weapons squads) can the heavy weapons teams hold objectives? They are purchased as part of a troop slot in the FOC so I assume they can, am I right?

Yes, they are a troops unit.
