How do you assemble and transport your models with flying bases?

I have glued the stalks (correct name?) to two of my bases, but am starting to think that this will use up too much space in transporting them - whereas I could stack the bases more easily without the stalks attached, and the stalks could just about go anywhere.

Not planning to glue anything to the actual models though!

Just wondering if people have any experience, preferences or enlightenment they care to share on this.

Also - do you "clean" up your stalks? It seems to affect the clearness of the stalk, but does remove mould lines... would painting them be an improvement?

Thanks for reading,

I don't use the stalks, I don't like the air bubbles. I do keep the model connected to the base though, as I usually build a small hill or such that the model is attached to.

I use nuts and bolts.
Embed a nut into the model and glue the bolt to the base.
It would be possible to use threaded rod so that the stalk was detachable from the base too.

i have flying bases for my destroyers, though i did glue the stick thingie onto the main base, but since i have a toolbox as a carrying case, i keep the bases at the bottom section while the destroyers themselves remain on the main tray, if you ask me, this is a good solution

Unfortunately, I'm looking at transporting in foam cases as carry-on on aircraft. Stacking 3 bases and putting three stalks somewhere seems to me to be the most efficient way space wise. Extra scenery, while I agree nicer than the clearish plastic stalks, doesn't solve my space problem...

This is a cool idea! Pity I don't like the non clear bolt - I guess I could paint it sky blue... Would work really well in an Iron Hands army too I imagine Less so Orks...

Or perhaps I should combine the two ideas? Put the flyer on "terrain" that happens to "screw in" at the top and bottom... food for thought! Thanks guys!

I magnetize my stands. This works from everything as small as a (plastic) gargoyle to a large Eldar GravTank.

To note, it is important that Vehicles should be able to be removed from their stands.

What size magnets? Do you have any pictures? I've been magnetising weapons, but I just can't get my head around a magnetised stand for an Eldar GravTank - do you use multiple stands? (Though, given I am only thinking Deffkoptas, the stretch isn't too much...)

Oh - and a flying trukk

@Absolutionis

i agree that all vehicles must be removable from their flying bases, though i had purchased a box of the new gargoyles and their bases literally WONT come out of their holes, even without glue, taking them out with either take patience or risking breaking the top bit of the stand

Ive just build a harpy for my nids, and ended up using a valk stand due to its size.
Rather than keeping it on the base (chances are it will break)
Ive just used a pin instead to make life easier.
