A long time ago in a thread far far away... I talked about using wings for my "counts-as" Shrike. Like many of you I'm cobbling together a DYI Marine army. Anyway, I finally got off my lazy as heck arse and put the thing together. There's still a little nip/tuck I need to do with greenstuff but he's basically finished except for the basing. The only disappointing thing is how much he resembles Hawkman from the Justice League when you look at him front on. :( Hold him at an oblique and it looks less like a joke and more like a cool concept.

In order to make way for the wings, I had to cut apart a jump pack and fit the bits onto a regular backpack. The wings just would not go onto a jump pack without looking completely stupid. The helm is a carved up chaos helm that I didn't really care about and an eagle head from the Commander backpack. When I was looking at the head itself, the beak seemed to stick way the hell out there but once it was sitting on the torso it didn't look so bad. It did sit a little low so I had to raise it up about a milimeter or so. Slap some 'nades, give him a pistol, and he's good to go - not that he can actually use either the nades or pistol what with the lightning claws and all. The belt looked a little plain so I stuck a crux there as the buckle instead.

I decided to forgo the various cloth bits that I have laying around in my bits box mainly because they just wouldn't hang right on a flying figure. Think I need to dress up the legs a little bit more. Purity seal is an obvious choice for that. We'll see.

Anyway, here are the pics:

One of the pleasant suprises is how well the wings look proportionally to the rest of the body from the front. I was a little worried that the pegasus wings would really be too big but they're just right when attached to a backpack.

Interesting conversion,I like it quite a bit,it does however remind me a bit of Hawkman.

The wings strike me as being a bit... Chaos-ish? Seems more like a mutation...

That said, that is an amazing conversion and an altogether dynamic model that I really would like to see when it's painted.

True, but Sanguinus (Blood Angels Primarch) had the same mutation.

Agreed, though. Awesome model!

Very cool, but I just feel that the actual metal model is more Shrike-ish. Sorry.

HA HA!!! Hawkman..... Ha ha! Nice!

Yeah, I do like it, very different than I imagined from the post title, but better than I imagined. Love the head. Think you can detail the figure out a bit either with more wingy bits or somthing to make him look more regal? Some of the wings off of the dark angel's sprue might serve you well on his legs or thrusters. Lovin it either way!

I'm not a fan of winged marines (nothing extreme, it's just been a bit over-done over the years) but the posing is nice and dynamic. Should look good painted.

I'd like a more 'mechanical' looking wing too, as that's what Corax was said to have used for his 'jump pack'.

Still, this is nice!

I'm not a huge fan of the 'stock' Shrike model either, as Insaniak can attest!

My chapter is focused on birds as a theme, specifically eagles, hawks, and crows. This is why I wanted to experiment with wings. I did look at using only the wings without the squished jump pack, but it suggested soaring slowly instead of flying fast with an assault squad. Also, I don't consider this a mutation as much as an example of the unwieldy decoration that Space Marines love so much.

As for it being un-Shrikey, well, he is just a jump pack dude with lightning claws. I wanted to be a little more stylish and make him soar above the frey like a hawk hunting for a kill instead of some "Joe" running around looking for someone to stab.

Here's a big problem I see. He's going to have black wings like a crow. What techniques do you recommend to bring out the detail of the feathers without making it look non-crowlike?

Ide suggest a light drybrush with a mix of chaos black and a little bit of white. It sould pick out the details just fine.

Very nice. If you want to dress up the legs, have you consider embellishing the feet with hawk's claws? The classic High Elf repeater bolt throwers might be a nice (if expensive) option.

I just feel that the metal model already screams "Shrike" to me, meaning that although this is cool, I don't think it is a needed conversion.

Um, I'm not trying to make Shrike, DarkAngelsRK. Shrike as a model is really just some bloke with a jump pack and lightning claws. That being said, the Shike character has special rules associated with him that make him a good choice for certain army lists. I wanted those rules but with a different take on the model, thus I "re-envisioned" the model from the ground up and plan to use him in a "couns as" fashion.

As to the suggestion about the feet, I'm thinking that I might use a little greenstuff to make some claws on the shoes but I don't want to overdo it.

I think it will look nice on the tabletop. I do agree with the hawkman comment but I who am I to say anything, my 40k army is full of a bunch of dragons. LOL. All in all I like it, very unique, and if it fits your army that's all that matters. Good work.
