Some time ago I found myself in possession of the remains of a gargantuan 2nd ed. ork army. It's literally a large sack of old school bitz. This is the account of my quest to turn this orphaned horde into a more or less playable apocalypse army.

I'm not a good painter, so I'll just stick with my motto, "Fun is Good".

First up are some boyz. I cba to repaint 60 identical plastic ork boyz, so I'll leave them for now and get on with the newer models:

I also found enough parts to build a few meganobz. I was one gun arm short, so one of them got a plasma gun instead, counting as a kombi-scorcha. You're going to see a lot of weird "counts as" here. Just remember, "fun is good".

More will follow.

Comments and suggestions are most welcome!

Some very nice personalisations on individual boyz. I'd do something with that flamer on the mega armour guy (toppermost) though, perhaps a wash or some edging.

The plasma flamer weapon looks good from this angle dont know how it is from the other side but its a good idea

Gun barrels do benefit from being drilled with a pin vice.

Thanks for the feedback! I want to do as much personalization as possible, emphasizing the army being made up of spare parts

Ork boy with Master of Puppets sew-on patch:

I spent yesterday drilling gun barrels, some ended up a bit off-center but the overall effect is ok, thanks for the tip!

Also gave the mega-armored nob's gun arm a much-needed wash:

Moving all biker pics together:

Biker 1:
Guns moved to front since I didn't have enough bullet shell sections to fit them to the rear. The grot holding on to the biker's hat didn't turn out quite the way I wanted, but it's ok I think
This will hopefully be the only bike to use the original biker, he's tiny!

Biker 2:
A pair of guns short, I built new ones using a pair of exhaust pipes and old ork bolters. Added an ammo box in place of the engine exhaust pipes. This guy actually uses the biker legs and the handlebar from a space marine attack bike. I plan to use the original ork bike handlebar for something else...

Biker 3:
Here I've added some tyranid trophies painted in my tyranid color scheme. Also added some spiky bitz and tilted the guns upward.

After all the boyz I'm a bit sick of drilling gun barrels, but I plan to do it on these too. Comments and suggestions are welcome.

I am a big fan of customised Orks - nothing worse than seeing legions of identical models in an Ork army. Keep up the good work!

Thanks!

This one got, eh, a skull on a stick. Totally appropriate! Also tried to make the pose a little more dynamic.

Bike #5
I decided to equip this guy with a spear, and in order to get enough room to wield it, he's fitted both his guns on the left side. Orky?

Biker nob WIP

The nob is shaping up nicely, not done yet though. I've added extra large exhaust pipes and replaced the front wheel with... a bigger front wheel! The bike is adorned with a wolf's head, matching the nob's cloak. Strapped to the bike is his 'Uge Choppa.

Your bikes are awesome! When I first saw the old biker models I thought they were really boring, now I want to find some.

Thanks for the praise! The old bikes are nice, it's just the bikers that are horrible. Well, maybe not horrible, it's just that they're... small. Grot-sized.
On a side note, if I ever get my hands on the NEW bikes, I'm planning to use them as nob bikers since they're so much larger than the old ones.

Sorry for the lack of updates, I'm on vacation.

I've managed to put some more paint on the biker nob, and also started working on a classic Trukk and some VERY strange Killa Kans involving pieces of 2nd ed Sentinels... hope to have some pictures up soon

Great job so far!

I'd suggest painting the lasgun on your Nob's base a little brighter, to add a bit more character to the base. Not too bright though, you don't want to take focus away from the Nob!

Thanks, you caught me there! I actually have a plan for that lasgun, I play regular games against a small IG army and the next time I'm going to check out how he's painted his lasguns and put the same scheme on mine.

Those are awesome. I have some of those older style bikes, with the guns sticking way out to the side. You've given me some modding inspiration.

Very cool Orks all around. Definitely keeping an eye on this thread for more progress.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.
