Hi,

After spending many years toying with the idea of getting in to 40k, I've finally taken the plunge and invested in a Blood Angel army, paints/tools etc and an array of rulebooks and codexes. I'm currently working my way through assembling and painting the kits that I presently have totalling about 1,500 points or thereabouts. In terms of gaming I've played half of an introductory match at my nearest GW on a beginner's night which was really enjoyable and I'm very much looking forward to playing more. Unfortunately the battle was curtailed due to time restraints, but we still both got exposure to the rules etc.

I'm looking to soak up as much information as possible from here, at this stage particularly regarding the modelling/painting aspect. I've attached a picture of a work in progress Terminator, who I'm currently basing, to give an idea of the level that I'm at (very much a beginner, I'm sure you'll agree!). Any pointers to useful resources for unit choices, painting and modelling etc. will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Many thanks for the welcome, guys. I have to say I've been pleasantly surprised with the WH40k community in general with regard to how friendly and helpful people are, both online and in the stores etc. I'd wanted to get involved for a long time but was always put off since I thought it'd be impenetrable to a relatively old (29 y/o) noob who doesn't know anyone who plays. As I've said, both the guys in my local GW (staff and patrons) are really friendly and helpful as are the guys on here. I'm really looking forward to getting more deeply involved.

With regard to painting, thanks very much for your kind words guys. I was feeling a little down about the quality of this guy since it feels like everytime I put down my paintbrush and think it looks pretty good, I flick through a GW catalogue or one of the galleries on here and my efforts pale in comparison! Very heartening to see that as a first attempt I've not done too badly.

I primed this Terminator (and another fifteen or so models) with Chaos Black since I was advised to do so by a few YouTube tutorials that I watched on painting BA's. I struggled to get a bright, vibrant red on the black prime so I did an experiment and tried to prime one with Skull White and then went straight to Blood Red (which was a mistake I now realise!). The one thing that I was really struggling with on the guy I have pictured was detailing and getting a bright red colour as opposed to the crimson that I seem to have here. Anyway I reviewed a few more tutorials, invested in more paint (Scab Red and Gore Red including others) and I'm now preferring Skull White as a base, followed by a wash of Baal Red, followed by thin applications of layers of Scab Red, Gore Red and a mix of the two, then followed by layers of blood red. I don't have any pictures handy, but this has worked pretty well on the Tactical Squad I'm working on at the moment so I'll probably continue to use white as a prime. It's just a shame I still have a stack of primed black marines!

Welcome to DakkaDakka, and I must say, that is a supremely awesome terminator.

My first miniatures don't compare, and you put most of my current miniatures to shame! You certainly have a knack for painting!
