Getting drugs off the streets would be awesome.
I don't think it would stop random crazies being random crazies. Perhaps a better mental health service?

not sure what could be done to improve mental health services, since people still need to consent to them. Crazy people don't often want help and while I guess we could go back to the 50s where we just locked them up and forced it upon them, not sure that's better. But I guess nowadays frazzled would still have access to dakka from the institution so maybe we should go back to that way.
Also, electroshocks for everyone!

People keep giving these magical powers to guns.
Your gun won’t keep you safe from a random guy wigging out completely and stabbing you on a bus. Someone else carrying won’t save you either, in the chaos of a bus being evacuated the last thing people need is a weekend warrior firing shots. What keeps people safe from random crazies is the fact that random crazies are incredibly rare.
But it also isn’t guns that make crimes of passion happen. If someone gets that crazy, they’re just as capable of using a knife or other implement to kill.
It’s just a gun.

I agree. I don't think having a gun would have made a huge difference there anyway. Guy is walking past you, all of a sudden you have a knife in your throat, start to another bad day...
And who eats a carnie? Those people would probably taste terrible.

I remember when this happened, people basically just watched. There was plenty of time to stop it all, and they just didn't try. Other than the gun being some purchasable courage, I don't really think it would have helped much. But yeah, concealed carry is totally the fix to the huge murderous cannibal problem we have. The irradiated mutant one too.

Compared to the hot dogs and fairy floss, a carnie is probably the most nutritious thing you could find at a carnival.

This is old news.
It was mental illness that drove Li to kill McLean. He had a voice in his head that told him an evil walked the earth, and McLean was that evil. The voice told Li to dismember McLean's body so he couldn't rise again. I'm pretty sure the voice told him to eat some of McLean too lol. I guess you wouldn't expect to find your left index finger inside a crazy Chinese dude.

Voices? Evil? either he was crazy, or chaos has finally made its move.
Now back to the seriousness at hand. Most of the time to get a CHL, you have to go through some very thorough background checks, have a clean record, and go through a 2-4 day class. If someone on that bus had 1)Been awake and 2)Realized what was happening, a handgun very well could have made a difference. Did it necessarily have to be a handgun, no. But, its a lot easier to teach someone to be effective with a handgun then a knife or other close combat weapon. So to say that it couldn't have made SOME difference isn't really a valid thing to argue, because thats what the training is for, so you know when and what to do. If anything they could have shot the lunatic, and avenged this poor man that was just trying to get someplace, and keep this freak from hurting anyone else. As a side note, keep watching the trial, he will probably just get put in a hospital for the rest of his life, further sucking at the teat of dwindling state monetary resources, when he should be put in the gas chamber.

Not with weapons you can conceal. Police train almost entirely in their sidearm, and if its a good officer he/she will train with it significantly more than any army officer with his/hers.

Although it wouldn't necessarily have made a difference either, which is what some of us were arguing.
I also don't believe that because you have a class, you're going to become a steely-eyed genius in a crisis situation. Sorry...just not buying it. And do you feel comfortable firing into a situation in which two guys are struggling with each other at close quarters? And while other passengers are presumably panicking all around you and trying to leave the bus? I sure as hell wouldn't. I really don't think you guys are considering everything that would probably be going on in that bus, and how difficult it would have been to prevent this from happening.
Maybe you guys are all combos of Dirty Harry and Wyatt Earp, but I'd imagine that most LE officers would tell you the best course of action is to get the @#$% off the bus as quickly as possible and help others do the same.
If anything they could have shot the lunatic, and avenged this poor man that was just trying to get someplace, and keep this freak from hurting anyone else.
Vengeance isn't really why anyone should be carrying handguns.

Easy question. If you’re sitting nearby, with your family, would you rather have a pistol or not?
Then the second question, and more pertinent one arises. Would you rather have a pistol or a chain axe in this circumstance? Khorne cares not why the blood flows… just sayin…
Vengeance isn't really why anyone should be carrying handguns.

Somehow I think that a world wide concealed carry allowance would cause more deaths then it would prevent on busses.

You'll likely prevent the once every five years horrible slow cannibal killing. The only problem is that the number of accidental and intentional gun/chainsaw deaths on busses will skyrocket. This is typical pro gun/chainsaw thinking, one bad incident and its good reason to open the floodgates for personal gun/chainsaw use. Except when you put a gun/chainsaw in everyones hands gun/chainsaw deaths skyrocket, much in excess of the random and bizarre killings that pro gun/chainsaw people like to say could be prevented. Giving everyone a gun/chainsaw isn't the cure to the insane cannibal murderer epidemic. Do you know why that is? Because it doesn't exist.

Cops get into life threatening situations, freeze or make bad decisions. Even on the job, when the cop is somewhat prepared for a life threatening situation to develop, after years of training, they don’t always make the right decision.
So how effective do you think the decision making process of the random guy is going to be, who was just sitting on the bus going home, with his two day course in weapon use?
If anything they could have shot the lunatic, and avenged this poor man that was just trying to get someplace, and keep this freak from hurting anyone else. Mmm, yeah. Avenging the dead and shooting a guy so he doesn’t end up costing the government money… these are not reasons to carry concealed. It’s a weapon for personal defence. Drawing the gun to make sure the attacker doesn’t approach while everyone who can survive gets off the bus, that’s where the gun is valuable.
And that’s the big argument against concealed carry. I don’t have a problem with guns being out there, I have a problem with guns being the hands of people like Fattimus_maximus, dreaming of blowing away the evil doer.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that.
