I think your missing the point, the Space Wolf book from 3rd Ed is the current 'in print' codex in otherwords the legal one, the 3rd ed DA book is an out of print codex because they got an updated (but majorly crappy) codex, if you turned up and tried to use the 3rd ed DA codex at my club and flgs you would be asked to leave that just aint going to happen mate.
This is still a "game" right? It is meant to be fun right? Asked to leave because he wants to play a game iwth a certain list?!? hate to break it to you but this is a game of toy soldiers, dollies w/ guns. If he showed up at my club looking for a game I'd say sure. Whats the harm? Is the world gonna end? the cosmic balance thrown out of order?

Precisely playing by the most upto date rules is the easiest and effective method to play the game and have fun, you can't just cherry pick which codex you want because the latest one isn't as good as the old one, Codex Red Corsairs and Codex Dangels are prime examples of this.
We do have fun but we also play within the rules, cosmic balance isn't thrown out of order but alot of the rules queries come up when using the old books with the new game and its just easier to use the most up to date books.
Just a Q at HBMC do you use the older versions of your codices when playing your 40k Revisited project?

I say let two players play a game with whatever rules they agree to. I'm placing no fault. I think if someone shows up and says "hey can I play using this old dex list" a club/opponent could certainly say " id rather you not" and he can decide to play an acceptable list or not play at all.
The suggestion that if someone showed up and asked to use a list that he would be asked to leave is a rather ridiculous reaction to someone asking a friendly question in advance of playing.
Then again i forgot what serious business 40K is...

Suppose my buddy Dave was a DA player back in 3E, and he kinda quit for whatever reason (wife, kids, job, whatever). He's getting in after 5+ years, and he hasn't bought the new DA Codex.
We should string him up for coming with his old models and old Codex?
That doesn't seem right to me.
I'd be more inclined to pass him a beer and play anyways.

@JHDD
Of course not, because Dave's your mate. YMMV, but playing 40k with strangers and acquaintances at a FLGS usually involves an implicit social contract to use the frame of reference everybody is most comfortable with, i.e. current rules and codices.
Often times people that simply declare they are using a previous version of the rules end up being TFG.
That being said if someone amiably asked me for a friendly game using an older codex, I'd likely oblige. It's all in the presentation.

Stop being intentionally obtuse.
You're attempting to fault and/or criticize a group for wanting to use the most up to date rules. Do you realise how absurd that is?
I agree that it is up to the players to decide what rules to use, but if you show up to a group using different rules and just expect them to accept it, then that's you (or whoever) being an idiot, pure and simple.

Yeah I faced those as well. Unlike IG which can now field 9 pie plates, IW doesn't look too OTT anymore.
Sigh... I miss my army, Emperors Children, but no siren, only 2 HS used and 5 troop choices, just a simple well built EC list. Just like mama used to make.
Which (to get back on topic) is why I hope SW turn out to be the HTH monsters that I've been reading about. My EC army did it with 65% HTH, 35% shooting. It had a low model count, 52 including vehicles, and was extremely competitive. Since GW nerfed and killed my army, I'm hoping I can get something similar with the Wolves. And if GWs track record is anything to go by, a SW army will be valid for another 9 years.

Yup. Ordnance used to be scary when all we counted in 3E & 4E was VPs, but IG with max Pie will have issues going for 5E Objectives.

No you keep the 9 oblits, add a 1st turn charge lord, 2 Las Plas Tac squads and 3 Defilers with indirect and theres a 4th ed army.

In your circles maybe.
I've never played or seen someone (other than on the Interwebs) use an army like this. Most Chaos armies I played consisted of 4 12-man Marine Squads infiltrating with Icons to bring on Blood Letters, or armies of led-by-the-nose Berzerkers. I've never taken 3 Defilers in a single game or more than 3 Oblits in a single game unless it was a big 5000+ points game.

Pretty much your correct.
I play a lot of tournaments though, I must just be accustomed to the filth.
I remember all those armies you pointed out well, it was always a challenge for my Tau army to kill that many bloody spase marinez before the dumped a shed load of blood letters on my poor firewarriors.

I'm not faulting anybody for anything, perhaps read my post more closely. A group certainly has a right to want to play the game in whatever form they choose, i have no issue with that.
A statement was made that if someone showed up wanting to play an old codex they would be asked to leave.
That is an absolutely absurd reaction to a request. Sure tell the guy "we only play with the most up to date codexes" or "I'm not interested in playing vs. that", but to ask him to leave? The guy is probably better going elsewhere anyways...

The point I was trying to make to JHDD was that you cannot just turn up and expect people to play the way you wish to, say "asking them to leave," was a little extreme on my part I agree however the point still stands.
If someone turned up and explained that they had been out the hobby etc then thats fine i've got no problem, neither will my gaming group, we own all the dex's anyway so I would explain that the book has changed and give them the newest one explain how everything works, build them up an army list with their stuff then find them a game with someone as other hobbyists should, walking in and demanding to play a certain way just isn't going to happen and not just where I play thats pretty much a given all across the board.
The initial statement was made essentially that because Space Wolves still use the 3rd ed book I can ergo use the DA 3rd ed book because I dont like the new one, now that crap just aint going to fly no matter where you go to play

As a general statement, sure. And you'll have the same issues if you insist on particular LOS or demand other particular considerations, even if you use the most current Codex.
I don't think anybody had the notion of "demanding" anything. I certainly didn't.
No, that statement was NEVER made. I said:
- because the 5E SM Codex doesn't let me field the army that I want to, that I will switch to BA (using current WD rules).
- there is nothing wrong with using an old Codex (i.e. DE or SW)
Other people are twisting things to say something completely different from what was argued.

Surely you understand that 90% of the arguments on the forum are a direct result of the fact that people do not read the posts carefully. It is really quite funny.
Nevertheless, I hope that the Space Wolves get treated right. I don't play them, but I really like the sub-codex marines better than the vanilla marines.

I know some codexes get nerffed(chaos) and other over power (IG,SM,and orks) but the important thing is too have fun, like it actually says in the rulebook if someone wants to use a previous edition, fine. There are some rules that should be broken if agreed on at your FLG.

Its nice to see some Wolves stepping on something at last.
With regards to the effectiveness of the old (IE SW & DE) 'Dexs, I teemed up with a mate of mine in a doubles tourney (Me SW & him DE) and came second so they certainly still give it a kicking.
To do with the playing against older ed lists, I know a few guys (bought 5) who have copies of their respective 'Dexs going back to their armies genesis as well as all the old rules. They come to the shop some vets nights and play whichever ed they feel like. Conversions fill in for discontinued models and away they go.
As for the artwork I have to agree, those are very very dead Tau. (The swirl in the back might be a lance strike that is being disrupted by the atmosphere, hence the lightning)
