I'll pick up a set at some point.
Combining it with a Mighty Empires set would be the way to go.
I'll most likely get two sets and make one into a wall-map, like the one shown in WD.

That's a great idea. We did a Border Princes campaign prior to Mighty Empires. It worked alright, but if somebody bumped into the wall then you would have pieces sliding around. I think a wall-map would be best for doing movements that day, but leave the tiles down for the extended amounts of time.

I haven't seen how they did it, but I imagine it involves magnetizing pieces and latching them to a piece of sheet metal.

Personally I love the concept. I will be picking up a set of each and then combining adding as needed. If the stock campaign stinks i could make my own pretty easy + these tiles can be used for a host of other game systems.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags. |

That crossed my mind also, but the process of sticking a magnet on one side of the tile wouldnt ruin one face of it?

I think any planet with a hive city would be mostly a wasteland.
Considering the amount of pollution that exists on those planets, the environment has got to be trashed.
Check out the Ravner series for descriptions of acid rains and devastated landscapes around hive cities.

They are plastic, so worst case, you can glue them together and screw a few tiles to the wall...

Blue Tack or hot glue would be a good semi-permanent adhesive.
Hot glue on sealed painted tiles should be able to peel off w/out taking paint.

I've already placed an order for one of these at my flgs. I've been waiting for this every since ME came out. I haven't read through the rulebook for ME, but I have seen some of the extensive additions GW has done on their website to add to the flavor and depth of it. I just really hope they add in-depth campaign rules for this instead of some stupid ladder system with no perpetual units.

At the LGS, we got ahold of a glass face bulletin board case that had cork on the inside. After snapping the board together, we put heavy duty pins around the edges where it would hold best (we just pinned and hung the board, as opposed to going through the board)
It has been up there for about 6 months.

After reading the WD article for this today I was still mightily unimpressed.
Boring tiles and such a forced sales pitch for a lackluster product.
I love campaigns, but this is a waste of time/money imho...

Got a look at the Hive City tile. It's actually really nice. You could just as easily buy a set of Mighty Empires and a few Hive Tiles and it would work just as well.
And the order sheet basically spelled that it comes with 2 tiles. Nice!

Yeah the store got a pair, and they are a lot better looking than the other planetary empires pieces, but then they don't have to be reversible.
Looking forward to painting it all up =]

It looks pretty good to me but it's just too expensive.
Incomplete HeroScape sets go for very little money on ebay.
With a little putty and some bits I think we have a servicable alternative.
For that price it would have the advantage that tiles could be glued together permanently and
securing to a wall would be really simple.

Yeah £350 is quite a lot, but you don't need to paint it . . . and it's more 3D . . . and erm . . . it's £350 lol
I don't think that Planetary Empires is so bad that you need to spend £350 on an alternative, just get Mighty Empires to add in, it really makes the map more 3D and a lot more diverse. =] . . . but if you don't already have it then that's more money =[

I have a perverse love for map campaigns that dates back to at least 40K2. I didn't much care for these when I saw the preview pictures, and I still think they're kind of flat and uninteresting (and too gosh-darned Imperial looking) likely to facilitate the extra non-tile pieces like power generators etc.
However having read and enjoyed the Rok of Ages Campaign idea in the current WD (the second one I have bought this decade) that I'm kind of stoked to buy it and play out a planetary assault spin-off from my BFG campaign, so I will buy.
I'll also likely end up shelling out for the Mighty Empires tiles as well, just so I can have some variety and decent looking maps
Maybe planetstrike too
Damn you GW marketing for being so gosh-darned persuasive. Looks like I'll be putting a frwaking huge order in to Neal soon.
And I'm actually looking forward to reading how the campaign goes when I purchase my 3rd WD of the decade (I suspect it'll be an IG win as they are the newest army, but we shall see)
