I was told by my local GW staff that their purpose was to inform us of a new policy that they are trying to get rid of rumours by promoting transparency in their marketing.

"Everything that is happening for the next three months, we are told, and are cleared to pass it on to you." was the quote.

Q: How many of a specific demographic group are required to carry out a simple task?
A: An arbitrary number. One to carry out the task in question, and the remainder to act in a manner stereotypical of the group.

Hence the mystery box.

Then why don't we know everything that's coming out for Space Wolves already? Three months from now is November. The Woofs are due out in October, right?

GW isn't going to give us anything. They say they will but how long and how consistently will they keep it up. How much you want to bet this will be the first job to get let go if they have a bad year.

GW's idea of transparency is a blister pack.

So have they hired the old Iraqi Information Minister to handle their website now?

I think it's just a result of the nature of things that 'unofficial' sites will have more interesting but less authoritative news info.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

They already have the three month cycle of info leak for the next release anyway. First white dwarf is the one page spread showing half the new mini's coming out and the blurb saying when they're out. Second is not a lot. Then the third is the break down of the new release with sprue pics and tactics etc.

They're really going to get more transparent then that?
And how will that stop rumours if they do seeing as we talk about stuff ages in advance.

Scary idea H.B.M.C. GW seeks to dominate the global t-shirt market. Next year we´ll have legions of fanboys saying how cool are GW´s t-shirts and how nasty it´s to wear something else

OK, I know how lame this will sound, as we all know the reliability of RedShirt info.

Just got off the phone with mine though, and asked specifically about the new shirts. He did state that the GW believes that the 'rumor sites' as he called them (specifically mentioning BoLS) are a detractor from the hobby, generating bad feelings when people don't get what they want, and somebodies rumor had them expecting. Read: Space Hulk and the mystery box.

GW's site is being tooled up a bit to get people to go there more than they do these sites (here), and to do so, state that they will be adding a newer News/Official Rumors section that will get info out to people as quickly as the rumor sites have been.

As with all new projects; This is the intent, execution remains to be seen.

As for the whole thing about getting people to register on the website - thats a 24/7 365 thing for RedShirts to my understanding.

Again. All just based on the info given by a RedShirt who loves his company to the exclusion of few other things.

yeah,
The thing is GW made these sites very popular by Not having official forums.
Now that they are here, and people like them, I don't think it's GW's call to cull them...

Precisely BrookM.

and Panic, I don't see this as a culling.

Sites like this are great opportunities for the hobby enthusiast to showcase their work to their peers, receive feedback and encouragement, as well as new hobbying ideas.

I think GW's concern here is that once you go into the News&Rumors region, somebody posts some wild nonsense that may or may not be in any way rooted in truth. Someone reads this and most likely adds their own wishes and desires to it. Someone else just drops in to complain about Dark Eldar. And finally someone just gets upset and threatens to flush all their dolls down the toilet because they were hoping the next codex would be 'theirs'.

It speaks poorly of us as a gaming community, and while I'm not 100% GW does everything right - I am not in their board meetings. I don't know all of the challenges they face as a company. Nor have I ever run a business like theirs before. I think the same goes for many of us here.

So now, we have one less gamer out there - one less possible opponent while you're hoping for that pick-up game. One less possible friend, because someone got this persons hopes up based on wishful thinking.

Sort of an extreme example, but likely a source of concern for GW in my unknowing opinion. And surely one they can try to rein in without having to hire new staff or anything like that.

People overreact all the time, whiny little witches that they are. And if BoLS was really that influential with their rumours these days the hobby would be dead trice over already.

I agree I do not see BoLS being all that as far as influence is concerned. I would think that the rumor mill could be used as a way to gauge popularity and response to some of the things that are out there. You wouldn't base your final decisions off of it but it could give you some directions as to what to look at.

I for one would like to see more of what is coming out and what it is going to be about. To me that is important. It helps with doing a budget and trying to determine if I need to save for some items or I get them now. I am pilling money away now for the the new Wolves. Been playing them since Rogue Trader and they are in need of some serious updating. When the new stuff hits the shelves my goal is to have around $300.00 to let go for new stuff.

But that is just me.

GW lost that customer because they won't tell people what is really going to happen for their beloved army in a timely fashion, so they go to where they think they can get that "fix" of info and it fails them.

GW two biggest "mistakes" are all the needless secrecy (and needlessly lying about it when asked about it) and tying codex/army releases together because it causes this needless holding back of updating armies for the current edition. Someone should not have to wait 11+ years (2 whole editions) to have a real update to their army's rules. GW staff should not continue to tell people a product is not going to be released within the next year or so a few weeks after it has been officially announced in White Dwarf as coming out in a few months as what happened with 5th Edition. I understand wanting to hold back release info in case something falls apart before release (look at how many RPG products/Video Games are announced but are little more than vaporware for years on end) but it is better to have some official hope about a product/release rather than no real hope at all.

When WotC releases a new version of D&D, you roughly know what books will be re-released/updated/repackaged and get a regularly updated rough time table as to when. They have previews weeks and months in advance. They interact with customers on their own official sites. Same with FFG, I know what is coming soon and get hints as to what might be coming soon. They even post PDFs of their board game rules soon after release.

I understand that GW thinks their business model should be "Buy What We Released This Month and Don't Care About Anything Else Until Next Month" but people don't do that either for long or at all. Most people don't play Warhammer and 40k (and/or LotR/WotR, same with SG products). Few have more than an army or two for whatever GW games they do play. They just want to see something for what they do want to collect/play on a regular basis.

I apologize for the needless repeated use of the word needless in the above very needless rant.

Maybe everything we know is a lie because,

It is the super secret release of 6th edition or edition 5.1 or a clear coherent update of the rules that completely screws with how we play the game.

It would be better if GW had just refused answer any questions as to the nature of the Mystery Bok. Just a flat, "no comment."

Waaay back in the day they've gotten burned when they released info too early, so I can't say I blame them for being skittish. But just go back to the six month window and call it good.

I understand, you can't talk about everything, and sometimes plans get scrapped. But GW needs to be more transparent, and more honest with thier custimers, especially considering the cost of the models...

If GW seriously wants to bring people away from sites like this one and to their own, it's going to take a lot more than simple "sneak peeks" section like they had before.

I want to talk about the hobby with like-minded individuals, I want to see terrain and models made/painted by people other than the 'Eavy Metal team, I want useful articles and tutorials that reference anything that could possibly help me become a better painter/modeler and not be shackled to just whatever GW actually sells, and you can't get that from what basically amounts to a big shopping cart with nothing of any value on it.
