My division writes file viewers and translators. We sell components to other companies, who then put these tools into their products. We're on over 15 different operating systems, including several mobile platforms, and embedded in many internet apps that people use every day without thinking about it.

Personally, I still do some coding, and manage a team of engineers that support the core of our system. I've been with this division for 13 years now.

I'm a poor college student. Well, I am a rich college student, which is still miserable poverty by most standards. In my "off time" I am the night manager at applebees. Before anyone asks, I sleep for 4 hours outside my first class, and during the last portion of my "easy" classes, especially on test days, since I've always found tests easy. (though significantly less easy now that i've entered college)

Before I went to college I drove truck for a while. Decent pay, good hours, (mostly) enjoyable company. Almost got raped once, except he was nearly 400 pounds and I carried mace at all times. Guess how that turned out for him.

If it makes you feel any better, the enormous hole in our public finances due to gross mismanagement by our government throughout the economic boom (go go Fianna Fáil+Progressive Democrats and ridiculously stupid voters who kept voting 'em back in) means that from next year education is no longer free over here. I reckon they'll still give a lot of help to low income students, but anyone who can reasonably pay, will have to. I don't think that's too much of a bad thing at all really, as long as they set the bar high enough.

I had to get a 10000 euro loan myself this year to go back, as I'm no longer on that gravy train anymore . A piddly amount compared to student debt in other countries, so I'm not too unhappy about it.
