And in response to the topic. Guy hugs are much briefer affairs with a general pat on the back and a few words in a gruff, manly voive.

Girl hugs are much more complex affairs. Ask 1 of your female friends about it, or try to get a demo with her.

The OP's point is still sort of lost on me. I understand that he is Chinese, and to be honest if I found myself in China I'd feel a little lost as far as cultural body language and general rules regarding proximity went.

Hugging is the act of placing your arms around another person for any given reason. Some people hug as a greeting, whereas some do not - in Australia you see a lot of different cultures interact, and even in my family there are the 'huggers' and the 'no-huggers', even before BO is taken into consideration.

There are no real hard rules on hugging because it is typically a cultural or intimate device, and hence the 'rules' are bound to the situation. As a general rule, when one person pulls out, it's over. Try to avoid arms around hips if the person is not intimate with you. Also, if you're just going in for the feel, don't bother asking the community if there is a proper way to do it. Nike it.

Yeah, it's a good point and I should qualify what my earlier point. I was talking about the kind of dude who insists on hanging off of girls when they are clearly uncomfortable with it.

When I hug I often panic at the last minute and overcompensate. This leads to uncontrollable squeezing, screaming, defecation, crying and/or laughing, and inevitably, fainting.

I've never been able to explain it, I guess I just love giving hugs...
