I'd say my ultimate waste of a purchase would be...well....the list is long. I'd say Guardians. I already knew Id hate painting them before I bought them, but I did anyway, and sure enough....the models are so skinny. A brush stroke that is a hair too thick stands out alot on them. Especially when painting black models and having to highlight the edges.

When i returned to 40k after a long break I was given a SM army. I bought all this stuff for it and I was all excited to play it. Then, I looked at the GW site and saw the Valkyrie model. I instantly became sad that I didn't play Guard.
So I would say: My entire SM army.

For me it was a Forge World Ven. Dreadnaught. It seems smaller than the plastic ones and overall unimpressive.
Personally, I think the metal V.Dreadnaught blows it away.

The master of the ravenwing on jetbike... when I play CSM and SoB. Yeah, not sure what I was thinking. It's a beautiful model, but one I'll likely never take out of it's box.
The possessed box IMO is a gem for the Chaos Marine army. Use a part here and there on your models and you will give them a great chaos look without requiring too much conversion. So many of those arms can be "count as" powerfist and other random assortment of weapons.

That's too bad. The model is really nice.
Think about starting a combined DW/ RW army.
I remember how Possessed were promoted by GW when they came out.
Obviously, players bought them but recognized early that they are largely useless.

I don;t even know anymore. I know I wasted a ton of cash on putting together half a playable Elysian army back in the day. Also some other assorted IG stuff. Also, most of my vanilla Marines. I did a drop pod list, and try as I might, I couldn't make it effective enough. Now I've jumped on the Space Wolves bandwagon, and I couldn't be happier.

My worst purchase was also my most unnecessary. I had just started out, and it was my first trip to my unfriendly local gaming store. I purchase a bottle of GWS official PVA glue. I paid seven dollars for a bottle of PVA glue.

Probably the FW siege drill, as I only play chaos and CBA to build a renegade guard army - however it si a *beautiful* model, so it has utility in just looking darn good.
Chaos Metal dreadnought. Sucky rules, sucky model. Have 3 forgeworld ones that look down their noses at their ugly brother....

That siege drill is awesome looking, and I've long contemplated getting it - as a counts-as seismic hammer, if nothing else.

It was more the DK actual drill - its aout 50points and when it surfaces it does S8 AP2 hits to everything in a large blast marker, and has meltas etc whcih allow it to ram at strength 10 from a standing start...in other words its *great fun*
The siege arm for dreadnoughts is just sexy, much like the huge heavy flamer on the open topped chimera-chassis command vehicle...

What the hell else do you want from that box? It has more options than any kit from the time, and still has a heaping helping of options for models these days. The only thing missing is a second lightning claw.
My unnecessary purchases list is distressingly long. Let's see...
- 1500 point Iron Warriors army - 3 Marine squads, 3 rhinos, 3 vindicators, 5 Terminators, and a Warsmith. Bought the metal GW conversion packs for every squad. This was a year ago. I have since built and painted one squad and one Rhino.
- Was going to start a Flesh Tearers army. Bought the Blood Angels codex and Seth, and I'm supposed to pick up Flesh Tearers shoulder pads from my FLGS. Thankfully I stopped before I got in too deep.
- I bought the Imperial Sector, only to realize I had absolutely nowhere to put it if built. I do plan to build a table with it in the future, so it's not a waste yet!
- Ork barricades set. They're sitting on top of my speakers right now, unpainted and untouched.
- I have a Land Raider and a drop pod sitting in their boxes. I've had them both for over a year and a half.
- 2nd edition starter set for 40k. It's sitting with my Necromunda starter set. Both are unpainted and mostly unassembled.
Oh, buyer's remorse.

I would say that my worst purchase as a 3rd edition metal Lictor. I played 'Nids at the time, but that was
1) A *VERY* ugly model,
2) A living hell to put together.
Also, Swooping Hawks. They're good lookin models if you can get them together, but the wings are damn near impossible to get on there, and once you do get them stuck on there they fall off when they tip over because they're not balanced well.
Ugh.
