Ahh, so there is a higher power within Dakka. Like the Mournival to Horus....
That does sound rather cool...
Wait, does that make Yakface Horus?
And Lego... Abaddon?
Nah, probably on of the other Primarchs...
But then, that would mean Yak is the Emperor?
Ah, so confusing...

Dash makes a good point. Was Frazzled always this way, or was he relatively sane once?
My bet is that he overdosed on amphetamines and then Yakface somehow lost the power to boot him...

Now, you're touching on something different, entirely.
You're leaving the realm of "How do you become one" and entering "Why do you become one?"
Personally, I can attest that you must have a passion for the site. Something about it has to make you WANT to step in and be a part of growing it into the best site it can be. It's not unlike parenting, which is odd, considering the amount of immaturity online! LOL
Every staff member at Dakka feels a personal calling to be here. I'd wager on it.
There's no other reason to bother yourself with dealing with the stresses it brings.

I always had the perception that the mods on here just did that as a side-thing to regular forum going. As in, they are browsing a topic, and it is breaking rules, etc, so they lock it.
And, of course, they are over 9000 times more important than anyone that's NOT a mod hurr.

Does it require unanimous mod support? Say one mod didn't like the overall most supported candidate, would they still be considered?

A large post count is not necessary.
BUT we tend to post alot after becoming mods in the course of our work here so it quickly shoots up.
Also once we clear the user alerts the vast majority is done a part of our regular dakka forum posting/reading. We stumble over alot of the minor stuff that most users never see, and gat involved in the more heated debated to (as best we can) keep things on track.
But we are hobbyists first. We are here to enjoy ourselves, and try to make dakka a place others can enjoy.

Mods are picked by the site administrators based on a number of criteria, and FYI, we have yet to accept a direct solicitation from someone to become a moderator.
So what are we looking for?
We need moderators who spend a lot of time on the site (preferably during hours that our current mods don't frequent -- mainly the middle of the night in the US and on weekends).
We need moderators who have been around a long time. Obviously we don't want to pick a mod who just suddenly stops posting on Dakka.
We need moderators who, as much as possible, remain polite, calm and friendly at all times, even when others are insulting or baiting them.
We need moderators who display a fine command of the written English language, including proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. Because we do all of our communication with members non-verbally, they need to be able to express themselves very clearly through their writing.
We need moderators who are dedicated to the site. Those users who take the time to create and add useful content, give others suggestions on how to improve, etc.
So we are always on the lookout for these types of people to be our moderators. If you truly wish to be a moderator then the best thing I can recommend is to just be a friendly, polite, regular member of Dakka who contributes consistent quality content, writes coherently and always remains cool and calm even in the face of antagonizers.
The last thing I would say about becoming a moderator is that often people want it because they believe it is some sort of positive status symbol. The reality is, being a moderator can be draining and definitely sucks much of the fun out of visiting a site. So as has been already said, one of the main things needed to be a moderator is someone who is willing to give to the site as opposed to someone who just want to receive the imaginary boost in status that they perceive becoming a moderator will provide.

some secret societies allow a single member to veto any new member, others aren't as strict. My college fraternity allowed a majority vote at any quorum (half the active brothers plus one) to extend a bid, but after a person pledged, they were voted on twice by secret ballot, requiring 3/4 of the total active chapter to approve to pass, with any absences counting as a no. BTW, we didn't use black or white balls, as is most well known. Instead, we had a small hopper with either marbles or small d6s. A ball was a yes, and a cube was a no, leading us to used the term "cubed" instead of the more well known "blackballed."

Heh.
The power to warn/suspend/ban someone for being a jerk is fun for about the first 5 times, and hearkens to the scene from Aladdin where Jaffar becomes a genie, and is like, "Hahahaha...phenomenal cosmic power!" And Aladdin says, "Itty bitty living space." After the flash of awesome wears off, its a chore.
Same for being a moderator anywhere.
